Thank you for this. I have been floundering around in water all my life. Even had lessons as a kid and could never put my head under water without fingers pinching nose. I tried your techniques last night, working with kick board, then eventually on freestyle and breaststroke, and I am able to swim! I will keep working on my technique, but it was awesome to learn this. I swim almost daily for past month, feel like I made huge strides. (I'm 54, so high time I learned!)

Do we exhale and inhale both at the same time when we lift our head above the surface or do we inhale when above water and then exhale underwater? Is this how it works?
@FaresKsebati3 жыл бұрын
The most efficient way is to inhale above water to get all the air quickly as possible and exhale underwater! That way you don't spend so much time breathing!
@subtitledEN3 жыл бұрын
You only have like a second when your mouth is out, so use it to inhale. A tip: start exhaling as your face gets back into the water, this way you avoid having water getting into your mouth or nose.

You're welcome! Yes, that's correct. Breathe with your pull, and as the same arm recovers, return your head to the neutral position and begin the next arm pull :)

Every time I turn my head to take a breath water gets in my ears and it feels really uncomfortable. Are there any methods to prevent water from getting in?
@winterystorm3 жыл бұрын
This was good, but I still don’t know the best way to let the air out when my head is in the water, is it through mouth or nose, is there a technique to it like slow release? I really don’t like the noise of the bubbles under water but do I need to let the air out under water or can I let it out before I breathe in?
@FaresKsebati3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! It’s more efficient to blow air out underwater so you can only focus on breathing in when you turn your head for air. Try holding your breath underwater if you’re not breathing every stroke, then release the bubbles through your nose before you breathe!

I learnt to freestyle about 10 months ago. I couldn't swim very well before (never given it much practice) Right now I'm averaging about 23 seconds per 25m i.e. 1:45-1:50/100m. I don't have an issue with breathing on my side and several coaches at my pool have commented that my technique is very good considering my time swimming. My SWOLF is about 37-40 depending how fresh i feel. My issue is the breathing rhythm, i tend to get gassed quite easily and have to stop every 150-200m for 20 seconds or so to catch my breath. I'm not sure if I'm expelling too much air and therefore not replenishing it over time hence getting out of breathe or if I'm swallowing air. I've noticed that I tender to suck air in from the back of my throat with an open mouth rather than sucking air in from my lips (i hope that makes sense). Could that be the issue? I've noticed i hold my breath as my mouth re-enters the water, because of this i don't start expelling air until the second stroke of the three strokes between breaths. Does anyone have any tips?
@yt_95842 жыл бұрын
I'm far from a pro but from my reading I think it's the CO2 building up when we try to hold up our breath which gives this uncomfortable feeling. I kinda have a similar problem. If your goal is to swim longer and your breathing technique is good then you can try breathing every stroke without slowing down, e.g., watch Sun Yang's 1500m. This is also what triathleton swim Chanel advertises. However, in my case breathing slows me down considerably. So I'm fast for 25m but then the drag due to breathing slows me down. But in a few weeks, I have increased my swimming distance from 100m to 400m by breathing every other stroke and not trying to hold the air in.

Do I need to hold breath under water to help body floating?
@TimTekaev3 жыл бұрын
Some prefer to hold the breath, whilst others constantly exhale. Try to find your way of breathing. For me it's pretty difficult to exhale slowly. Just remember not to exhale while your head is up.
@Kittyz243 жыл бұрын
@@TimTekaev yes it’s been so confusing, some coaches say you must exhale constantly under water and some say exhale too much will cause body sinking … I don’t know which one is correct way, for me if I hold breath under water I feel more buoyancy but it’s more exhausting for long period swimming

I just can't. My problem is that I stop kicking my feet while i'm trying to breath, so I sink and choke. The other problem is that I need a lot of time with my head out of water, because I still have a lot of air in my lungs, so I exhale and than inhale. How much air one need to have in the lungs while swimming, water threading...??

Don't try to inhale if you still have air in your lungs. You just won't be able to inhale and you will feel like you're suffocating. So make sure to empty your lungs first, and come out just as you're about to empty them completely. Don't wait until you're totaly out of air, but also don't come out too early. Not easy, I know.

Hi Abegail! Try practicing breathing on the wall before you take it to your swim. Place one hand on the wall and turn your head to the other side to breathe. Make sure you're exhaling under the wall and turning your head far enough to inhale air and not water!
