Face floor, half head above waterline, one eye and ear underwater when breathing, arms at 1:00 and 11:00 when swimming, enter water with middle finger, extend on movement with shoulder, when you pull back pull with everything in your arm and shoulder, flutter kick;foot pointed straight short fast? I need one step before. I struggle to breath out under water and rapidly breathe in in a short time above water without getting water in my mouth nose etc., occasionaly choking or getting air in my stomach etc. Is that not something beginners struggle with? :D
@poolcenter1
@poolcenter1 Ай бұрын
Perfectly normal for beginners, yes. You can practice by standing in the shallow water and leaning over so that your back and face is in the water, perhaps one hand outstretched to the wall edge (coping). Turn your head to the side, without lifting the head, take a good breath, return to facing the pool bottom, and slowly exhale through the nose. Work on a slow, long exhale, starting with a 4-count, then try for 6, 8, 10 count. Whilst swimming, it's important to keep your head and neck in a down facing position, and to not lift your head up to breathe, only turn the neck, while keeping most of your head still underwater. Head down also helps keep your hips up, closer to the surface, which keeps legs from sinking. Work on being as high and flat in the water as possible, and reach out far with the arm opposite your breathing side, to increase the amount of time you have, for taking the breath.

My newly redone community pool stays open year around regardless of weather except lightning. I get to lap swim everyday at a lovely 80 degree water temp. Today its 47 degrees outside & raining. I can’t wait to get to the pool! 😃 This was a big part of why I retired early at 57. The golden years aren’t golden if you’re stressed out by idiot managers, 3 hr a day commutes & office drama. Bedsides all that, swimmers have beautiful bodies & are healthier than most people in the gym. Life is good!!🏊‍♀️☁️🌧️🌞👍🏽🩱👙

I just recently Joined a gym with a lap pool and wanted to learn how to freestyle correctly. I’m noticing many bad habits I need to correct. I tend to forget to kick, I have a fear of sucking in water so I lift my head to breath (not like your video) and I haven’t got the hip roll thing down yet. Do you roll your hip With your shoulders? Great tips; thanks

Yeah when you swim you rotate your whole body! Something i like to do when i swim is practice good rotation and i do a drill called sassy shoulders. Basically your head stays straight and you just kick twisting your body.

Is there a video on sort of how to actually get started with this? It’s really hard when you get in the pool in lanes and everyone is powering up and down and you just don’t know where to start. I can see this will be super helpful once you get going. I can swim breast stroke confidently but am terrified to actually ‘start’ doing crawl. Help!!! I want to do a triathlon nd can’t with breast stroke! Would so so love to be able to do freestyle well and not look like a moron trying!

this is exactly where I am at also! I can breastroke (w/breathing), and backstroke is slow but fine. And I'm not going near butterfly! But I want to learn how to freestyle, as I end up sucking in water after a few strokes. At the moment, I go up the pool using breastroke and switch to freestyle for the final 5 stokes or so. Not sure if this is recommended (switching strokes mid-lap), but it feels like the end of the pool is near and I can keep it relaxed. Then I will just switch over earlier and earlier until I can get 25m, and then 50m+. I guess one thing to remember is when you do freestyle, you probably travel faster than you think you are. You don't need to 'power it' (unless you are training for the olympics), and a relaxed and steady attempt will still look reasonably quick compared to other strokes? Another thing I might try is using kickboard (to work on legs and breathing), and then pullbuoy (to work arms and breathing), and then put it together

These videos are great! I'm getting back into this after some years. My question is, is this a change from what used to be taught or am I just remembering wrong? I took advanced adult lessons and Master Swimming in the 1980s and I was taught to put the thumb in the water first, do a little scoop outwards to grab more water, and then move your hand under the midline of the body, so the whole underwater phase is more of an S shape. So that's the way I've been swimming ever since. Next time I'm in the pool I will try it your way. But I'm curious about when this changed and are there still people doing it "my" way?
@FaresKsebati

Hi Tracy! Great question. The S pull was discredited in the 90s. While there may be older swimmers still pulling this way, the more modern pull should be taught nowadays takes into account shoulder health, rotation of the body, and the physics of the pull motion.

Just started swimming again as I put weight on after a knee replacement op. Swimming burns calories so it can definitely help with weight loss but it does depend on how hard/far you swim but anything is better than nothing. Exercising in water- walking - aerobics is also very good because the water supports your body weight, avoids the sort of impact you get from running/ HIT etc but provides resistance. Like all exercise swimming makes you stronger and fitter which also means your muscles develop and burn more calories.. excellent exercise especially if you can combine it with a healthy diet - not some freaky fad but more fruit and vegetables and less processed stuff..hope that’s helpful.

How can i improve the follwoing problem: I can't stay for so long with my face under water, I can do it in Breaststroke for every 2nd stroke but not in freestyle. This is all due to a trauma that I had once
@taleandclawrock2606
@taleandclawrock2606 Жыл бұрын
Re trouble keeping face in water for freestyle swimming, due to trauma. ( your comment is a year old, but i will respond anyway😁). There are 2 ways i would tackle this, having had similar issue. There is a therapy called EMDR, Eye movement desensitisation, which is highly effective and quick in relieving/reducing the kinds of traumatic responses which are just automatic reactions in the body. It is quick, painless and really works. Second, i would start very gentle desensitisation, accustoming yourself by tiny degrees, and doing deliberate relaxation deep slow breathing, calming self talk, friend with calming talk, during these activities. For example, in the safety of your home, think about the situation you are scared of. Imagine vividly being in the water with face in water. Notice your feelings and thoughts. At slightest instance of tension, distress or anxiety, release the thoughts, calm breaths, self soothing self talk. You are safe, etc. Next try same thing perhaps with a wet cloth on your face, or in the bath or sink. Next in the pool, but briefly to start. Dont move on to next steps unless happy with first one. If you have a bad day, go back a couple of steps. You are retraining your brain and body that this situation is now safe, you know what to do and can manage the risk well. Good luck! Dont let needless fear hold you back, just appropriate caution.

Great video, but taste and smell? Almost completely irrelevant to swimming, why include that in there? As chatGPT puts it: The sense of smell is not typically considered a critical factor in competitive swimming. In swimming, physical attributes like strength, endurance, flexibility, and technique are more significant. The ability to smell does not have a direct impact on a swimmer's performance in the water. Other senses, such as sight and touch, play a more vital role in navigation and pace management during swimming. The primary focus for competitive swimmers is usually on physical conditioning, technique refinement, and mental preparation.
