Hello Mike I breed plecos and I always have to add crushed coral to all my breeding tanks I feel they like harder water. Another tip is next time you get a cave full of eggs take a specimen container and get some of that water out and put it in another tank you’re trying to get going the pheromones get the other tanks going.

If I'm trying to promote the plecos to breed for me I just let the tank get messy, do a quick water change leaving the mulm in the tank than toss in some crushed Katapa leaf's. As soon as the female starts getting a bigger belly I toss in bloodworms for a few days till she lays. My disclaimer as always it works for me but my not for you.
@MichaelsFishRoom6 жыл бұрын
Good disclaimer! What benefit is the Catapa leaves?
@P0HTAT06 жыл бұрын
I have somewhat soft water to begin with but the freshly broken leaves turn the water a little softer and you get the black water tea. I don't need to do this with the commons but it's what ended up working for my SuperReds when I bred them.

FYI some plecos will eat their eggs and wriglers if stressed out too much. Though normally they are the more carnivorous species. Also a male will only brood one spawning at a time. So if you use smaller tanks (20 gal) a pair or a trio, 1 male two female, but in larger tanks you can have more then one male but you have to keep an eye on them as they can fight and can end up stressing each other to the point that they eat their eggs. So if you do keep more then one male in a tank have caves on both sides on the tank so they can have their own territory.

I put them in a small tank with an air bubbler because I was afraid the male wouldn't go back to them after I disturbed the eggs by accident. So now I have around 100, 2 month old babies. Nice work mate, good video. here is a couple of things that worked for me when breeding bristlenose(all variants). Do not have too many females to male ratio, infact I found it better to have more males than females, reason being is I have males breed them self to death, when there is too many females once he has done one batch of fry he is right onto the next one with no rest period, when growing out the fry put a powerhead in the grow out tank with them, this increases growth rate a lot, they are constantly swimming against the current and build up muscle / growth very quickly, slightly warmer temperatures and lots of food, which also means lots of water changes, so the fast growing combination that works for me is.... Lots of food, Lots of water changes, Lots of flow to a point its blowing them around the tank, slightly warmer temperature. nothing really new here to breeding any type of fish, except the hi flow in the tank, this is the key to growing bristlenose fast
@MichaelsFishRoom6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tips! Water Changes aren't an issue because of my auto water change system and I feed the heck out of them! The flow is something I have not thought of though!

all bushynoses of any strains are like guppies. So keep the water clean feed good food an wait. The males stay in the cave the females come when shes ready the male will trap her in until she releases then only the male will take care of the eggs, soon as they are free swimming they are ready to go again. Most people try to breed them before they are mature enough an changing chemistry doing all kinds of things when really they just need to wait for maturity of both male an female. People use more females than males simply because it's up to the females when breeding takes place, the males guard an fan the eggs. Females simply lay the eggs. Calico is piebald gene blues eyes are lucistic gene. Longfins just selectively bred for long fins. Claro is a nice little ancistrus, 187 is harder to keep but very pretty for ancistrus prefers softer water.

I've had plecos breed for me quite a few times. This tank has a large sized cichlid cave. 2 weeks ago there was a big orange blob of eggs on the tank bottom and the other plecos (prior spawn) left it alone, but the male would move the blob around a few times a day. The eggs hatched and I have a bunch of baby plecos in there. Previously I've never had it go successfully with the male kicking out the eggs before, so long story short, anything can happen with breeding plecos and it still works out. cough cough I'm fine.
