HOW TO BUILD A BALL PYTHON ENCLOSURE! (DIY!)

Episode 2 of the series is a DIY guide on how to build a ball (or royal) python enclosure! The actual box itself can be used to house many different species of reptiles, the size you need to do may just vary depending on what you plan on housing, but the idea remains the same!
This was really good fun, and if I could do this all the time it would make me very happy! I think I'd prefer to do so in the summer, but we do what we can!

Another tip, When drilling the holes if you put the drill in reverse, the teeth from the hole saw won’t be so aggressive and cause the wood to splinter. You only need to do it to get the hole started on each side..

I was looking at building one for my common ball python out of 3/4” Red Oak. What were your measurements that you had them cut the pieces to? And was it a 4x8? Excellent build by the way!

Wont the wood mold?

If it was wood that wasn’t stained/varnished then yes it probably would, but by painting it the way I did, it has treated the wood against things like that 🙂

Could I just replace the wood with plexi glass? And use silicone to water proof it? I'm kinda new to reptiles I haven't gotten mine yet

@@Longroad2go-o8j for a snake like a royal python probably not, because the thickness you’d need to hold in the correct temperatures would probably be triple the price of the wood, so it depends what species you’re looking at building an enclosure for 🙂

@@Longroad2go-o8j no, no such thing as too big. Some people will say yes but you need to remember that the wild isn’t too big 😂 there’s such a thing as too empty, and too big to heat cheaply.. so there’s things to consider there, the bigger the enclosure the higher wattage lamps you might need

@ no need to apologise, you feel free to ask away! Live plants are more of a personal preference. I like using live plants because I prefer the look and the extra challenge. But just be mindful that these heavy bodied snakes WILL sit on them 😂 so fake plants will probably be easier and potentially cheaper, but again that’s completely up to you. Live ones you can use are - spider plants, snake plants, ferns, pothos, and there’s probably a few others but those are some of the ‘easiest’

@@diamondrobinson6476 thank you! Rough estimate off the top of my head I believe it was around £100-120 for all the materials. One sheet of 18mm ply was only £45 cut to size as well which is very handy!

Overall, do you think this build was cheaper then just buying one? I want a large boa but the enclosures are sooo expensive. I want her to have like a 5ft by 3ft by 2-3ft, but i think I'd need to build it. How much was this build overall?

So to be fair, it’s probably cheaper than a brand new one, but the chances are you could find a used 4x2x2 online for less. I believe this with everything included cost me around £100-120, if I remember correctly. But then it comes into its own if you do more than one enclosure, because I’m including the price of the wood stain in this build, but that little tin probably did at least 2 enclosures if I remember correctly! And then the air vents, I got a pack of 10 which will once again do two enclosures, so it’s swings and roundabouts really 🙂 Also (sorry for the long reply! 😂) doing it like this comes in very handy if you’ve got strange measurements but you want to utilise the space, so say for example you’ve got an area that’s 3.8ft wide, but you don’t want to put an animal in a 3ft, there’s nearly an extra foot of space you can add, and then go up higher if needs be 😁

What do you do for lighting and heating?

Lighting and heating is an overhead 35W halogen, Arcadia shade dweller UVB, and an LED bar for lighting! I set it all up on the final episode of this series, “how to set up a ball pythons enclosure” 😁

@@brooklyntyrrell6823 thank you so much for watching, I really appreciate it! 😁 a friend of mine has recently used epoxy to waterproof his enclosures, and apparently whilst it’s a little bit pricey, the results have been incredible! Something I may look at in the future.. other people do glass lining on the bottom which works but can add excessive weight, plenty of options to be fair!
