+C80ree thank you for such a kind comment! I'm glad there are people still watching this video (it hasn't gathered a lot of interest to be honest) but personally it was one of my favorite content pieces I've put together from a diy context and video work. Our cat is absolutely loving his new freedom and we love it that he is safe. In fact, it has been so successful that I'm going to extend the run further! Our cat is empire building lol... all the best! :)

I gotta say.... this is pretty awesome! What we did was a bit bigger, hehe! We live in Hawaii and it’s gorgeous out all the time so we wanted our two cats to be able to go out but be safe. We live on a major road and see dead animals several times a week so letting them roam free wasn’t an option. Our house had a lanai (a covered porch basically) and a dog fence that went out into the yard that wasn’t covered. The Lanai + the dog yard runs about 900 sq feet with just under half being grass and the other half a covered deck. We used bird block to create a roof of sorts so they can’t climb out and we used a wire fence material to cover the sides. It’s a pretty massive enclosure for our two cats but they love it. We now have two chickens that live in the enclosure because the rest of the flock was basically killing one of the sisters by ganging up on her and kicking the crap outta her so we had to get her and her big sister outta there and the catio seemed the perfect place! They mostly seem to ignore each other, so no problems there. We have an attached cat door so the cats and dogs can both come in and out freely. The bird block also keeps the birds out... only 2 have ever gotten through in the last year and one I managed to save! I’m really really tempted to start fostering cats since we have such a massive enclosure but I know if I do, I’m gonna wanna keep them, hehe. Haven’t convinced my grandparents (I actually rent the house from them) to let me have a herd of cats but I’m working on it! If you ever decide to creat a bigger place you have an awesome place under that deck! We even have a door in our fence so we can come in and out from the drive way if we don’t wanna go through the inside to get into the lanai! Also, we spent less than $100 on ours.... but we used almost all our existing lanai and then fencing we had set up for the dogs. We only had to buy bird block and chicken wire.

I had my son build me a cat enclosure for my cat so that she would be safe and not get sick again from other cats that are outside cats in the area. During the summer she would even sleep outside at night too. I also made a little garden for her from a child swimming pool. She loves going out in the rain now too as she stays dry but it's funny watching her trying to catch the rain as it comes down the side from the roof. She has also made a friend with a local female raccoon and they will feed side by side without incident and even play together. The birds are what keep her mentally active too as we too have many varieties in the area. I love the idea of the runs too that you have made for your cat. It makes me what to make some for her if I can just figure out how to do that on an upper deck.

I've got 5 furbabies courtesy of the local stray kitten factory when she abandoned them in my garage during summer. The neighbor is complaining about their effect on her Quail egg supply so I have 5 stir crazy cats and a house with an "aura" all it's own. I need to get them outside pronto. I was toying with the idea of enclosing the pergola as a cat run. There are so many holes and gaps to be sealed it is a daunting task. This setup you have would give a quick start to the project and be expandable as and when the money becomes available. Looks like a trip to Bunnings is on tomorrow morning to get mesh and some angle iron to start me off. Cheers Eric

Wonderful! We have wild animals, snakes and a very aggressive tom who adopted my neighbour. My possum and babies have been poisoned this week so I have to start on the enclosure really soon. Fantastic job! Wonderful that you did this for your feline family member! In the video, I saw the cat jump up on the side of the main enclosure rather than use the shelves. A thought: Maybe affix a piece of rug or carpet remnant to the side of the cage, maybe a foot wide by a few feet, so your kitty can climb the rug/carpet to get to the upper levels and also keep his claws sharp. Or maybe a 4"x4" with rope tied around in a coil as a climbing post that goes from the bottom to the top as well? Just some suggestions to a wonderfully executed cat run... congrats for the good job! All the way from Long Island, New York, USA.

SUPER! I’m a subscriber and have loved watching your videos since I first found your channel. I’m researching dog barriers - ones with gates that 1) won’t trip us (I’m on a cane now), and 2) one which is inexpensive and easy to assemble or build. I saw a how-to video for cat runs and thought, why not? Now, wasn’t I surprised when I saw your smiling face. How did I miss this video; it’s 3 years old! I’d wanted to put up cat runs in the house, and this video has reignited my desire. That, and the facts that 1) 5# Charlie is a thug and beats up our 135# Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, and 2) 5# Taco is a weenie and hides from all our dogs. He basically lives upstairs and since I can’t do stairs well these days, I rarely see him. At any rate, fabulous video, as usual. Throw us more of your non-gardening stuff because you always have really smart work-arounds. Thanks from Aberdeen, on Grays Harbor in Washington, U.S.A.

That’s so awesome. It’s basically what I’m hoping to do for my cats. We have a custom chicken coop/outdoor covered run that’s tall enough for us to stand in. Got rid of the chickens but it would make a perfect catio especially if we add some shelves and scratchers (minus the actual coop and egg laying box). The tunnel would go from our house which already has a cat door in the wall, under the patio roof, and across to the new catio.

That is a beautiful cat run i have had numerous cats just being dumped at my door, and having lost two, one from being run over in the street, and another one being killed and eaten by hobos, I made a cat enclosure for the rest of the cats. They have a tree to climb on, and an outside area of approximately 4 x 4 metres. The height of the enclosure is about 3 metres. They go outside to do what they have to do, and I do not use a litterbox for them except in rainy weather. I clean up the enclosure from time to time. They have plants and sunshine, and that is important. I would love to add a cat run along one side of the house. Perhaps that will be my next project.

Did you add on to this? I'm searching for an updated video. I don't eat ruminant animal food, so I'm here for Geo!!!! You have so much space, and you're handy, I hope you built some more runs for him, especially to feel grass under his feet, etc. He'd LOVE that!!!! I've been building catios and runs for my 7 rescue cats, and my goodness, do they absolutely love them (I have 3 full-size catios completed, and 3 window catios). Wish I'd have done it sooner. Five of my cats stay in my yard, but one of my newer rescues is a rebel, and goes down the street, etc, doesn't come in at our 4pm curfew, etc, so I decided to entice her with catios. All my cats spend most of their time in them, even with the doors open (until 4), but she can't help her wild heart, ha. I have a new cat that was dumped in our neighborhood that is still integrating into our home, and she's just happy to have food and shelter so no issues with her. She's utilizing a window catio, and I'm building her a bigger catio into a tree, with a run that she will love. I loved your video of building the runs, etc, and came back to see what more you've done. Bless you!

Yeah, I really like cats, except for the litter box duty! They're much calmer which matches my nature. Dogs are great, but require so much attention! -- Like a 2 year old that's peering under the bathroom door: Whatcha doin'! But at least they can fetch stuff for you & crap far away from the house!

How happy your cat is! We need to do a similar construction as one of our cats got out and over the fence one day and a neighbor's cat gave him what-for! After two visits to the vet, we are determined to make our cats outside adventures safe. We thought we had trained them to stay in the yard, but, of course that was just wishful thinking. Now we're on a mission to build a catio on limited funds! Your video was most helpful. Subscribing! Many thanks! Candy

Thats very nice lets him get fresh air and sun.But seems to me the whole ideal would be to build a cage that fits tight to the ground where he could go jump in the grass and touch the earth.Thats the kinda outdoor system I am going to build for my babies. All you would need is to build say 4 or 5 foot high fence and put a wire top on it connect it to the run you have and bet he would love that.I love to see folks caring about cats and animals in general thank you.I have a beautifull russian blue hair girl named smoke we started calling her moke .Thanks paul
