You're the Bob Ross of car interiors. Calming voice and Positive attitude. Thank you for posting this. I have an ext cab s10 with an automatic. I was wanting to build a custom console that incorporated a V matic floor shifter. I've never built anything like that before. Starting to think it's a little more than I can handle.

Thank you, haha! You answered yourself on why you can't do it, you said "I'm starting to think I can't" one step at a time and when you get struck you take a break and THINK about the next step. Maybe the break last a day or a week, but eventually you will come up with it as you go. This is the way I have learned all I know and still take this approach on new custom ideas. That's why custom made items are soo hard to price before build!

At the 1:34 into the video, you show us the "Welt Cording" added to the edge which is a nice touch. In the boat industry, they use extruded aluminum "J" channel face nosing then relief cuts, "V" cuts on the back, allow it to gently bend around the same curves. They drill holes, counter-sink and use short stainless steel screws. It is about 3/16" over the edge and highly polished and only 1/2" deep on the back. An alloy of 6063-T6 is extruded while T-0 is billet. They also use "Tee" nuts on the back side of the trim boards you drilled and screw the 1/4 X 20 bolts as well. I am NOT saying anything is wrong with what you are doing, just passing along info that may be useful in a future build. Keep up the interesting work. I enjoy the layered look better that curvy smooth fiberglass, Bondo on wood. It adds more visual pleasure to the eye. The other benefit, is the ability to add a soft area for the leg or knee to rest while driving, rather than a hard irritating surface. Good video. After first elbow went bad, I spent 3 years as a service manager at a boat dealer with 34 foot max boats. ASE Master since 1978, retired.

Dean Kay thanks for the info, I had some t-nuts and didn't even think about using them. Thanks again as I'm working on another console this week!!!

Hey Matt great skills bro. I’m attempting to build my own console for my 70 mustang. I stumbled onto this after watching at least 30other videos. Your skill and knowledge is exactly what I’m needing. Thank you for the information.

Hey man, great work! I'm putting 2 10" subs in my 05 Silverado regular cab, which is my work truck. I was going to build a easier, behind the seat box, but something kept telling me to do a console box and down fire them. Not trying to do anything too fancy, but I would like to do a locking lid and possibly kerf the top, put some roundness in it..I put it on cardboard, at least sides, then lost daylight last night. Any tips, or a link to the video where you built the box? I'll definitely smooth it out with filler, router edges, etc. May also use part of the jump seat bracket to bolt down the back, and make legs(?) Up front, or a longer face piece to raise it the 2" I need, which shouldn't be an issue with the slight slope the floor has. If you have any tips, I'd greatly appreciate it, as I'm trying to do this as budget as possible! For about $100 I could've ordered a junk China box that fit behind the seat, probably worked fine...but it cost me a total of about $65 for wood, glue, screws and pin nails! Just makes sense now to see what I'm capable of, as I've never built a dual purpose box, or anything out of wood that's so visibly noticeable. Granted, it's a beat up 05 1500 work truck, I spend my days in it!lol

I do tons motorcycle seats and center console lids. I found heat gun helps the corners. Get it hot and stretchy then staple. Heat vynil evenly distribute the wrinkles. I'm getting fast. Also offset staple gun when staples rip through. My buddy even turns down air pressure.

Bolt a "U" shaped metal bracket to the floor and screws thru the side of the console into the bracket. This can be done nice and clean or sloppy, depends on the bolts and types of screws you choose?

Great craftsmanship! Have a 95 two door Jeep Cherokee I am in the process of a frame up restoration. It’s all manual ie: no power anything. I want to update the electronics etc. Any ideas on interior layouts?

You mentioned welt lights? I searched for welt and bead and can’t find anything. Any suggestions are to where to look?
@charles1matt3 жыл бұрын
Oh wow, remember them many years ago before most were doing LED lite consoles. Layers of frosted acrylic panels is another option. Or simply an recessed channel with LED strip like a shadow box effect??? I'll share more tips as I work on more projects.
@swooshdave3 жыл бұрын
I did find this. Is this what you meant? www.glotrim.com
@charles1matt3 жыл бұрын
@@swooshdave yep or close to it? Can't tell if it had an edge like welt cord to staple thru but you could sew clear window vinyl around the light tubing just like welt cord.

So if I drill bolts to the floor to mount my console do I have to go underneath the car to put nuts on them to tighten it down
@charles1matt6 жыл бұрын
That's the best idea, but it depends on how heavy a console you build and what you feel comfortable with. Make sure you have enough room underneath and no lines in the way. Hope that helps!
