To all of you who are making negative comments about this video, build a better one and video it. I am a builder/remodeler with over 18 years experience. I thought that this is one of the best videos on building I've seen. I picked up a few great little trick, his explanation is accurate, his attention to the issues that end up causing decks to fail are great. I would hire this guy in a minute if i needed a deck built.

It's nice to see your carpentry skills, you my friend take the extra steps much like myself, I would have used more decking screws for the wood attachments, and predrilled the decking to prevent mushrooming on the composite decking. Anyway, great job

Why is so many giving this guy a hard time, he is actually pretty good. Been framing for 30 years only 2 things I see I would change. 1 - no step down to deck, want deck same as floor of house. 2 - no "Y " brace on the post, that is so 90's Instead do a 2 x 4 triangle at a 45 from the house to the center of the deck at the ribbon board. Very hard to bend a triangle.

Be careful when working with composite materials and stairs. These materials have poor rigidity compared to wood and the stair stringers need to be built closer together in order to prevent sag and spring in the stair. Make sure you consult the manufacture instructions for the product you use. Failure to properly space the stringers would also result in warranty problems down the road if you experience material failure or sag.

Put a 16d framing nail and a deck screw next to each other, half way driven in a board. Take a hammer and smack each of them side to side and count the # of times it takes to snap off. Nail will outlast the screw by at least double. Higher Shear strength is what the nail provides, as well as a lot quicker and cheaper.

Compressive strength increased 5-20% 3. Tensile strength increased 20-40% 4. Wearing resistance increased 40% 5. Bending strength increased 20-50% 6. Leakage proof

It's a beautiful design, and great craftsmanship, but that's not really an accurate title for the video because you've got an entire team helping you and it's half plastic and PVC. I hate that synthetic stuff, even though it's neat how it snaps together. It really takes away from the natural feel and vibe of having a WOODEN deck to relax on.

Why wouldn't they set "J" bolts in the wet cement? Why did they use plywood to cover the footing and not a 2x12? Nails holding the runner are the only thing keeping the deck from twisting off the house. Where are the lag bolts through to the footing of the house? If the footing was rotten, why not fix that when the siding was off? Yeah, it's a year old, but just popped up on my recomend...Finally, i love how far the deck sticks out over the posts.??!!

what´s with the pvc sleaving? wouldnt that increase the process of rottening the wood when dressing it like this? i believe that wood stays fresher longer if its not dressed(lots of moisture and humidity that gets stuck in there). and imho it looks way better just to have treated wood out in exposure. nice deck though

I like how helpful the video is.. but I have to admit I'm not a fan of PVC materials. I don't particularly like it, and probably would choose traditional wood materials for my own projects because I don't know the benefits, aside from the fact the materials system lets you put it up more quickly then its wooden counterpart. I'm vary curious to why did you pick PVC over wood, or if time saving was the sole reason to its use in your project. Aside from that question, this is a well made and vary helpful video. In no way do I mean to criticism, and only wish to be informed.
@Pyrichia
@Pyrichia 8 жыл бұрын
The PVC materials look like painted wood, but don't require anywhere near as much maintenance as a wood deck. That plus taking special care to protect the wood supports from rot and moisture, means that this deck will have a long and cheap service life while still looking great the whole time.

Well I can quote a PVC pipe will last approximately 100 years with the confines of a building wall where UV light where never will affect it, and that it will for the most part be thermal stable... that same pipe underground might have it service life reduced to 25 years because its no longer a thermal stable environment it has to transmit the temperature of the house into the ground... Vinal siding is suppose to be able to last 50 years, but the secret to that is its in slotted attachment fitting lets the material expand and contract on the side of the building freely.. I don't see that here.. this deck material is seemingly nailed down with the expectation it will expand and contract at the same rate as the wood its nailed to.. (and I'm seriously concerned that its not even realized at that either.. As for a wood deck.. I seen a reasonably well done deck lasting 40 some years with regular maintenance.. while without maintenance it will start to dissinigrate as soon as the weather seal start to fail... there is no need to seal the decking of a plastic deck.. but at the same time I think the that will wear our a deck would be the temperature rising and falling everyday. Your deck will get hotter then the wood its nailed too, and expand fast and sooner as it get hotter. then when the temperature goes down.. I would imagine it might not hold its heat as well as the wood its nailed too, and then shrink faster caught it yank on the fasteners in it.. a few years of this and I think the material would start to form bend it it.. and this is why I ask.. how long is this stuff suppose to last. I never see this before and wonder if anyone else has..
