Props for putting your beams on-top of your posts. And props for putting your joists on-top of your beams. That's a solid load-path. But... You sure like those adjustable post bases. I'm not a fan: It's a very small cross-sectional area of steel holding up your deck. Throw a hot-tub on that, and now there is a significant load. In my area, anything over 30" tall (top of deck to top of grade) needs a permit. That primarily means utilizing significant footers (deep and wide) along with significant post-base connectors. Proper footers should not settle much, if at all. Therefore future adjust-ability is either not needed, or so minor that a simple shim would suffice. Also: A beefy post-base connector will have a significantly larger cross-sectional area in contact with the footer, and extend deep into the footer with either a J-bolt, or direct-set. Rebar cages may or may not be a requirement inside the footers depending on use and location.

I don’t know how to say it, but your deck was hard, woody, erected off the ground, a little bit wet, and it was worth watching the video! Jokes aside, great job! I noticed you are working at a faster pace with better quality. That’s called improvement. Keep making more videos!

How are those adjustable post bases anchored to the concrete? Looks like the bolt is not actually cast into the pier, and just floating in the hole? Or is there a threaded insert that allows for the adjustment? Seems like the could be subject to uplift if its just floating? I have no experience here, just curious

Question: I’ve seen you use those anchors in your other builds. But I wonder if they’re strong enough and if you know their weight capacity. Thanks in advance.
@devonloerop5 ай бұрын
Each anchor is rated for something like 4,000lbs and it's real capacity is much higher. So that's 24,000 lbs of rated downforce between all 6 of the anchors. The sauna almost weighs 1,000lbs and the decking/framing all in weighs about the same. So There's a safety factor of 12. She's not going anywhere! 🤘🏻

Nice build man! Always enjoy your content! What holds the anchors in? Is it floating basically or do they thread into something?

Floating right now, once things settle after fully loaded you can epoxy them in place

Nice build. Isn't the purpose of the blocking between joists to prevent lateral torsional buckling? I thought it would have made sense to put some at the midspans of the joists, especially if you're putting something heavy like a hot tub on there. Great video, it looks great!
@devonloerop5 ай бұрын
Yeah, it does prevent that torsional loading. It's even better to have them fastened to your beams because now you're able to anchor you member that's preventing torsional distortion. Thanks!!

Serious question. It seems like you do really well financially. Why do you accept sponsorships for videos and make ads for companies? It kind of degrades the experience of your videos, and if you don't need it financially then why "pollute" your videos?

dear god, a deck for “$2,000” - on “a budget.” Are people losing their minds? Is this deck constructed of some rare, endangering Chinese wood that takes thousands of years to mature???

2-3 bags of concrete each post, each bag goes for $6 these days. Sono tubes are $15 each. $150 just for concrete and tubes. Those steel anchors sitting on his posts go for about $20 each. That’s $120, altogether your already at $270, … That’s not including any wood or screws.
