How To Build A Fence Around Garden | T-Post and Cattle Panel

This is how my family built a fence around our garden out of T-posts and cattle panels. The primary purpose is to keep deer out. We have also seen some wild hog sign for the first time in our area, so it will be good to protect the garden from those critters as well. In the video I mention that using zip ties to fasten the panels is just as good as metal T-post clips, but in hindsight I recommend using the T-post clips as much as possible. That's what they're made for and they will hold up a lot better than plastic zip ties.

Thanks for sharing the build. If the deer are undeterred by your fence try tying eight foot 2X2s next to the drive posts with at least one strand of wire at the top. Use bailing twine possibly for a mid-line so they will not jump through or over hopefully. A cheap fix.

My husband and I will be building the same one in the coming weeks before we can plant. Funny enough, for the exact same reason. The deer like our tomatoes, beets, and carrots 😂 Thank you for this share

This is the best, simple cost effective design I've been able to find. I think I'm going to use your method just with smaller openings in the fence, at least at the bottom. Take care!

Thanks I think this is what I will do. Except I'm not leaving space for grass I'm just going to put wood chip mulch around the borders so I don't have to mow

Here in Montana you would need 8 foot height to keep the elk out. 6 might do it for deer

Can you give more detail about how you fixed the gate door? We are hoping to plant our first big garden this year, but need to keep our outdoor dog from digging in it. Thanks!
@dirtdiary3162
@dirtdiary3162 3 жыл бұрын
Hello - the gate is just a section of panel cut to the width of the desired opening and the "hinges" are zip ties attached to the last vertical section of the adjacent panel. Hope that helps!

I might do this around our garden and plant right up to it so the fence can act as a trellis. Anyhow, curious if this is still working for y'all?

Worked great - kept all the critters out. Also helps to tie up some pie pans (noise makers) at different points on the fence. Thanks

How did you attach your fence gate so that it swings, and how does it close up? Any latch?
@dirtdiary3162
@dirtdiary3162 3 жыл бұрын
The "hinges" are just zip ties attached to the adjacent section of panel. The latch is just a loop made out of a zip tie that goes around a t-post. Hope that helps!

Purple panda mic set will help with the wind if you do alot of outdoor filming, couldn't hear most of what you said when the wind was blowing. Plus the wind pushes the recording baseline down and makes your voice even quieter. If not a purple panda mic, at least get a wind sock.

I got as far as the point where you used CABLE TIES and then quit. Plastic cable ties may well be "fast and easy" to install, but they also fail within a year in the sun. I use them each year to reattach my "Beware of dog" lightweight aluminum signs to my gates, and each year several cable ties break on their own (no weight, no tension, no stress). NEVER use cable ties in a fencing application!

Fair enough. I don’t use them anymore either. Thanks for the comment.

@@BlueRibbonSongs There is that height fence around my property and deer routinely jump it to get at the grass growing on my property. Next year I'll have a garden and this will not keep those deer out. I'm researching other deterrent methods.

The problem is Deer can jump that fence. Cows can push through that fence unless you install a 3rd T-post in the middle.
