How to make a raised wooden fish pond: • How to build a raised ...
This is a compilation video of a 4 part series I uploaded a while back showing every stage of building and explaining how to build a pond for fish. It shows all the various steps taken to make a fish pond which is safe and accessible.
In this fish pond video, the start of each section is at the following time:
0:06 Digging the hole and laying the underlay / liner
7:44 Installing the cascade
24:02 Installing the edging, pump and filter
36:16 Rockery and finished pond with pump and filter details
45:32 Out-takes
Pump is Oase Aquamax Eco 8000 and the filter is an Oase Filtoclear 30000.
Liner is 1mm Firestone rubber.
Underlay is 300g / sq.m polyester underlay.
The design of this pond allows for good access and different positioning of the pump for winter and summer positions.

This is the Best 4 part video on building a Pond! I just Love The Pond Guru’s accent. He explains step by step exactly what to do. I even took screen shots and printed off the pictures to do my very own “Duck Pond”. Thank you Pond Guru! You make it look a lot easier than it’s been for me. But It is my first and it’s looking really good(if mortar holds). I hope I mixed it as you said. I just love your videos! Thank You!!!!

A good mix of not caring about getting your hands dirty and an eye for the artisic stuff with the rocks. I like you are accomodating to the critters as well =p You also highlighted for me the need for good quality materials. It really shows in the end result.

This is by far one of the very best videos on building a pond that I have ever seen! You have the most detailed information and I hope the German company who manufactures this filter and pump uses this part of your video for their commercial. I agree. I would love to see what he did about the rockery and perhaps what it looked like when established. A Very good presentation and very informative. I wished I had realised just how you can use mortar the way he does when I built my pond 30 years ago. Its now so overgrown you cannot see it and I believe it has an old shipping trolly semi submerged. Lost interest in it I'm afraid.

My hubby and I both loved your video AND your accent! ...it was very informative. We have a few questions: 1) Does the more expensive filter/pump/filtering waterfall mean less cleaning of the units? Some have "baskets" that you take out and empty and some have all sorts of filter mats/sponges/media bags/bio balls/etc. that must be washed off daily with a hose...we are looking for the least amount of work for our pond and if the more expensive units mean less work, than that's what we want. 2) I'm seeing the name brands of Atlantic, Oasis, and Savio a lot in my pond-shopping. Is one brand better than another? 3) One of the filters I ran across has "Patented Integrated UV System Housing" so does that mean it has the UV filters inside of it? Do you recommend that over buying a separate UV light? 4) we are looking at pond kits to make it easier for us to install....do you recommend kits and if so, what name brand is a good one to go with for the least amount of work? We are looking for a pond that's about 1800-2000 gallons...and finally 5) do you recommend gold fish or koi and what's the difference? I've heard koi will eat all your plants and I want plants in my pond...thanks for your expertise! Your new fans, Darleen & David Riffle

United States. Basically, what is the easiest to maintain type of filter, pump, and waterfall filter? Thanks so much! Darleen
@pondguru
@pondguru 7 жыл бұрын
The pressure filters are very good as they can be hidden out of the way and still have the outlet feeding up to a cascade. I'm not involved in the US market so don't know what is available there but as long as you go for a pump big enough to give a good flow down the cascade. When sizing the pump you will need to give the dealer the vertical measurement from water surface to highest point of cascade, width of widest fall of cascade and the length (and internal diameter) of the pipe for them to properly size a pump for the job. Once that flow rate for cascade was worked out you'd take 10%-15% off for the pressure filter (that is normally how much flow is restricted by a pressure filter). Once that is worked out then step up to the next pump up if necessary. The Oase pumps are expensive but are very reliable, very low maintenance and have very low running costs which is a major concern considering a filter needs to run 24/7. I have seen many pumps available in the US and the running costs are crazy as they are such high wattage (power consumption). The filter would be sized depending on the pond volume and stock e.g. a 20000 filter would suit a 10000 pond with a mix of fish or a 7000-8000 pond with koi. It depends on the manufacturer but most will have sensible information on how capable each model of filter is. Hope that helps.

Size of liner is dependant on pond / cascade size. I can't remember the exact size for this pond but it would have been: max length + 2x depth + 0.5m and max width + 2x depth + 0.5m. I have put note of filter and pump in description, no worries.

+Pondguru Outdoors yes I'm in the usa. 40 mil is the thickness of the pond liner and grade. firestone is the best and most expensive. but well worth it. I've built well over 30000 koi ponds since I've been doing them. almost 5yrs. it's a big demand here. and people want there ponds to last so I use 40 mil. it's durable and less likely to become brittle. it has a lifetime warrenty

Doesn't really matter how many steps the cascade has or how long it is as long as it is roughly in proportion to the pond. 4' is way deep enough for everything but very large koi. As an ex aquatics supplier, now retired and having built a few ponds I can honestly say your methods and the way you explain the reasons are truly spot on. While the pond is not designed for serious Koi keeping it is more than adequate for keeping some really nice pond fish and attracting wild life. I think it took 2-3 days to settle and the filter was flushed once. Fish added after a couple of weeks. Thanks for watching and appreciating the video.

Thanks for watching and appreciating the video. The pump and filter are manufactured by Oase - details in video description. I know what you mean about the foam. All the ponds just seem to end up looking like a jumble of rocks. Not sure why they all look the same although 'Jagged Moss' makes some very good ponds which buck the trend and look very nice.

The plant part is important in such a large pond as it really will do a good job of soaking up nitrates.

Enjoyed watching this and learned heaps - I don't have a pond now - I did year's ago and it was similar on a much smaller scale ...what I have now is a tropical fish tank and you have set me straight on how to filter properly - works beautifully and I have never gone back ....Cheers !!

The 'How to' videos I make are really about the important stuff - construction. How the pond is stocked is secondary really but if I get the chance I will do a 'Revisited' video, no worries.
