Floating Plant Islands are a great way to add beauty, habitat, and additional water quality treatment to your pond. They are particularly good if you don't have a lot of shallow area to plant. John and Jennifer from Hillsborough County Environmental Services show you how to build two types of floating islands.

Not bad, I just priced 100 feet of 4 inch corrugated drain pipe on Amazon at $86 and free shipping... I would have never thought of using that as a flotation device.. Affordable and simple... Very nice...

Thank you!! I'm converting my chlorine in ground pool to a pond and wondered what to do about the lack of shallow water for plants. I tried stacking up tires or bricks to set pots on but it's kind of ugly. This solves the problem beautifully and leaves so much more room for swimming

I wanna try this with tomatoes... the chipmunk around here are crazy. I like the pvc, if you glue it and add a air tap that should float great.

With the first design, do you need to put earth / compost between the two mesh layers? Also, can all aquatic plants be planted on the island? Great and easy to understand video - thanks.

+Diana Casas The first model in the video does not include any planting medium between the layers. It works best with ground covers, but other aquatic plants can survive. The design could be modified to incorporate planting medium, which would increase survival rate of plants. But weight and containment of the medium are concerns. Feel free to modify the design and let us know what you come up with.
