This is actually SO helpful. We are hoping to build and design the inside of our own van but the fridge was getting us stuck. This may be the solution we are looking for! Hope to see you round on our side some time :D Safe travels, Thalia & John, South African Travel Vloggers

Where did Matt pick up his fabrication skills? I’m especially curious if you could make a short video about that screwdriver and pencil taped together template maker tool from an earlier episode of the shell and cab boxes. It looks so simple but I’m sure there’s something more to it because all of his pieces look like they came out fantastic

HAHA. My "fabrication skills" are just made up as I go along😅 the pencil-screwdriver tool IS that simple. Just hold it at a consistent angle from whatever it is you are making a template of, then test fit your templates before using them to make the actual pieces. You can buy a tool that does the same thing, and use stiffer template materials for better results, but I'm cheap and not a perfectionist.

Poor man's alternative to lock on fridge which might outlast everything else. Drill a hole through slide and lock them in place, with a pin/bolt. Or use a sliding barrel bolt, attached to fridge or slide and just insert barrel in hole in truck bed. Yep, did that before - outlasted the fridge and did last for 298,000 miles.

Thank you for sharing John. I relly like the sliding barrel bolt idea. Obviously, I don't mind drilling holes in my truck:) I will keep an eye out for one next time I'm in a faretaria (hardware store)

Why not aluminum angle bars??
@TheTravelingTogetherJournal
@TheTravelingTogetherJournal 6 жыл бұрын
Given the weight and vibration, I felt more comfortable with steel, but Aluminum would probably work too. Definitely if you welded a little triangular gusset at the ends to add rigidity/support since the fridge feet sit right at the ends.

@@TheTravelingTogetherJournal My thought would be on the weight savings. I'm using aluminum as my skid plate (1/4'' thick) and inner fender well (1/8'' thick) on my Jeep TJ.

Yeah. You'd save a few pounds for sure and every bit counts.

Matt, I was actually searching for a home made fridge lift. Haven't found one yet. soon as I saw your build I knew that those heavy steel angle bars are way overkill. some good sized aluminium angle would easily hold the weight of your fridge, any food etc inside and someone leaning in to look for something, etc. Given the correct thickness of aluminium, there's no need for gussets at the end to strengthen the bar. You would save A LOT of weight for sure, is easier to work and a bonus, it looks better straight up. Good on you for having a go. Overkill is better than not enough so pat on back mate.

10,000 lbs Fridge ?

The empty fridge weighs about 60lbs. It has a 66L capacity, so its quite a bit heavier when it's full

@@TheTravelingTogetherJournal 2" angle iron: 10,000 lbs ? way over built. too much weight, for no good reason.
@TheTravelingTogetherJournal
@TheTravelingTogetherJournal 2 жыл бұрын
@@dafrasier1 The 2" was just a convenient size to mount the slides and to provide enough room for the fridge feet to sit. Suppose I could have cut off some of the unnecessary steel where the feet didn't sit or used 2" aluminum angle.
