great arrow build! i didnt even know about the spinning inserts. i personally use a q-tip for cleaning the shafts insides. i fluff it up a little and for .204 shafts it works perfectly. you can try it if you want, cause you can get in deeper this way. i shoot 3d archery and a long time i went with like a super light arrow setup for more speed. i got a 700gn setup on my recurve now with a 75 insert and a 300 field point. comes at over 22% foc and i love it! first time shooting a parcours i hit a bison at 70 yards first shot. such a sick setup!

Good video. I don't know about the spin-inserts, I'll leave that up to you and others. However, I would recommend to do 2 things in arrow building to help with buidling an *accurate and consistent group of arrows*. 1st, use and arrow squaring tool on both ends of the arrow shaft. Very important to insure that the ends are square before installing the nock and inserts. 2nd, use a spine tester to index the bare shafts and use the stiffest spine location to index your fletching. Yes, even 4 fletch. For 4 fletch, index the stiff point of the spine with the flat side of the nock. Using the best and consistent process to build arrows will yield more consistent groups and less flyers.

I keep some canned air and QD auto electronics cleaner around to shoot into the shaft then I wipe it out with a q tip. Really easy way to get all that dust out.

I killed my Cow Elk with my Recurve and a 635g arrow. Now I've hit a compound as well I'm going to do a build along these lines. FOC is easier for me as my draw length is a Hobbit 26 & a quarter inches lol. Nice video and subscribing was easy decision 😁

Extreme FOC but you wrap and add a fourth feather? The spinning insert you lose the bone splitting of the single bevel.
@jcarry5214
@jcarry5214 2 жыл бұрын
If his arrow is 8 gpi then the 3 inch wrap and 2 inch feather aren't going to matter too bad, it's still going to be very high foc with that monstrous head and insert. the feather is 1.2 grains and the wrap is about 3-5. And with the spinning insert you (theoretically) increase the bone splitting because weight of the shaft doesn't have to spin, the mass drives the head like a chisel and allows it to do its woodsplitter thing. That's the theory on the ethics website anyway.

You are killing your FOC with those wraps. For every 5 grains you add to the back you have about 25-30 grains up front to maintain the desired FOC. Edit: Go with a 300 or 315 grain broadhead.

Not impressed. I understand high FOC has become the latest fad for some, but even the Ashby Foundation does not recommend above 20%. You're chasing a number, thinking more is better, but despite your reference to "science" I'm not convinced you really understand the negatives of extreme FOC. As far as the "can't wait to see what it will do to a whitetail" comment, you won't see any difference between that setup and what you shot last year. My setup this year was an Iron Will wide 125 grain, total arrow weight 545 grains, and I got a complete pass-through plus the arrow buried itself into the dirt 9 or 10 inches on the other side of the deer. This was a northern Wisconsin whitetail, 3-4 years old, nine point--not a fawn. You want me to jump on the high FOC bandwagon, show me how your arrows group (and drop) at 50-60 yards with 15, 20, 25+ FOC. I live in Colorado, and I advocate that you should take most of your practice shots at least 20 yards beyond what you plan to shoot in the field. That extreme FOC is going to be less forgiving, simply because it's going to cause your arrow trajectory to drop faster--you end up with less margin for error.
@unitedoutdoors
@unitedoutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
This is no fad. Ashby recommends as much FOC as possible, especially more than 20%. Above 19% is where substantial gains are seen. The trajectory problem you bring up does not exist. Higher FOC will not cause an arrow to drop more in relation to an arrow with the same TAW. I would personally feel nervous with an arrow under 600 while attempting to shoot a buck.

@@unitedoutdoors hey man just a little testimony here. Over the last 5 years I killed one deer. And that deer barely got penetration but i had enough to get liver and guts. Lost another 4 or 5 deer. One deer the arrow actually bounced off lol. I had a standard build arrow with 100 g mechanicals. So, i built a 600 grain arrow with 200 single bevel vpa broadhead and 100 grain insert. My foc was over 20 percent. I killed two deer this year. First was a complete pass through with a dead deer in 30 yards. Second was a buck. Quartering away i broke the opposite shoulder with it. He made it 30 yards before piling over. Hard to argue with that IMO.
@michaelpoplawski3246
@michaelpoplawski3246 2 жыл бұрын
@@decaturridgebees8761 I don't reccomend a standard arrow build with 100 grain mechanicals either. For that matter, I don't recommend mechanicals at all. I posted my arrow setup, and it wasn't a standard arrow or a mechanical. I do agree with the Ashby reports, which is why I hunt with a 545 grain arrow for whitetail (and am comfortable going after elk with that setup as well). The deer I took with mechanicals jumped a lot more at arrow impact, switching to fixed blade Iron Wills the arrow zipped right through--the deer crouched when the bow went off, but there was not the big kick I was used to seeing with mechanicals. The science says fixed blade is more efficient, and I tend to agree based on my limited experience.

@@unitedoutdoors If you want to get a little better FOC, then cut your arrows an inch or two longer. There is no advantage in cutting them as short as you do. The TAW of those longer arrows would be a miniscule difference between your arrow build in the video (16 more grains if you allow two inches). Further, you could coax % or two FOC by switching to standard nock vs. the nocturnals you're running. You're the one talking about FOC being the key, if that's true then give up the lighted nocks in the interest of science. Switching to standard nocks might even get that longer arrow even closer in TAW to your arrow build from the video. Then, test both arrow builds against the other and see if the higher FOC performs any better in either penetration or arrow flight.
