How to Build a Hydrofoil: Foil Wing Final Sand & Connection Holes (Video 9/15)

In this video, we finish building the wings. This is the final stage, and both the front and rear hydrofoil wings are complete and ready to fly! We start by sanding the foil wings smooth to 120 grit using the sander and by hand, making sure to remove any highs and get the foil feeling and looking perfect. Then we drill the screw connection holes to join to the fuselage. We also countersink the holes so that the screw heads sit in, but slightly proud of the top of the wings surface. This is to make sure we have a strong connection point where the wing screws to the fuselage and the screw head wong work its way under the fibreglass. Lastly, we sand the wings again with wet and dry sandpaper up to the finished surface of 600 Grit. That's it! The hydrofoil wings are complete and ready to bolt to the fuselage :)

Hi Luke, really enjoying this series of instructional videos. Your explanations and pointers are excellent. Great job! Have you ever considered using pin head machine screw instead of countersinking? The dome shape of the head wouldn’t impede and as it’s an Allen key job, more secure. Looking forward to completing the series.

Hey Morgan, thanks! Yeah, I have considered it. A Button head screw would work. The change in hydrodynamics would be small, and as you say you get the benefit of a more solid connection compressing downward. That said, the countersunk screws do work, particularly if you leave them slightly proud, and you do get a flatter finish. Either would be fine. I actually find the Torx/star head screws to be the best. Let me know how you progress :)

@@FlukesKitesurfing thanks Luke. It would be minimal effect, the drag would be tiny, as would turbulence. I’m a little way away from taking on a build. But when I do I’ll let you know. 👍🏼 I’ve made 3 surfboards, so I might tackle a foil board build too.
