I am new to woodworking! I have friend that needs one of your dovetailed flag cases! Do sell them? If so, how much for 2 cases? Awesome video to make them, just not to that level of craftsmanship! Please advise.

Beautiful work Rob! I have my grandfather’s flag and have been wanting to build a box for it. I have to continue to thank you for everything you do. In April of 2021, you called me to wish me a happy birthday (you had already sent me a card!) and to encourage me to finally start cutting dovetails. Fast forward to today…I just finished creating your small box design with the wooden hinge and beautifully hand cut dovetails. It was built to hold a small comfort bird that I carved for a friend fighting cancer. I will be giving it to him tomorrow. The things you do touch so many Rob.

Thank you for what you do for vets. I'm getting ready to take over the shadow box duty for retirement flags. Retirees take a turn for a couple of years and videos like yours really inspire me to take them up a step. Thanks again

I think the bottom miters would look better if you cut a dovetail shaped wedge and put it through the cutout in the miter and then trim it flush. Then it would look like the dovetails at the top of the case.

This is timely for me. My 90 year old father, who was a Korean war veteran (bronze star and purple heart recipient) passed away last August, and had a military ceremony at his grave side service. I received the flag that covered his casket, but it was put into a plastic wrapper to protect it. Your demonstration here gave me several ideas to build a case, although the dimensions will be a bit larger due to the size of the flag. Thank you for the great demonstration and helpful ideas!!

Rob, my name is Dan Giks. You have really inspired me to rise up in my wood working skills by all the stuff you teach us all the way in Kenya, East Africa. I built for myself a humongous shooting -board that has really helped me in improving the squareness of my tenons and cross-cuts...🙏🏿. I am also an avid fan of Purple Heart Programme...👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿!!!

My first 4 attempts that I sent you pictures of a few years back were cut and dovetailed at 45° on the bottom 2 joints, but nowhere near perfect so I filled them with epoxy. Have you ever tried that? It looks like your bottom 2 joints are 22.5° cuts, with dovetail splines, is that correct? The only reason I chose to cut the 4 cuts (bottom 2 joints) at 45° was because they resulted in a 45° angle. I figured out that it would work because the top angle is 90° and required the 2 boards to be cut at 90°. It was easier to dovetail 45° instead of 22.5°. My 22.5° dovetails were way too loose no matter how hard I tried to keep them perfect. Do you have a video of you trying your hand at 45° dovetails anywhere? Thanks again Rob! Shoulder to the wheel! 😉👊🏼👏🏼🇺🇸

An absolutely beautiful outcome, and informative video. I have made 5 of these flag boxes over the years for friends, though mine look like some kid in high school shop class did the work. As I am sure you know, there is no greater joy in woodworking than to see the appreciation from the vet's family. The scary part was making sure I did not get the flag dirty, or have it unfold. As there is something close to sacred about the way the military does the grave site folding. Thanks for sharing...... and could you share what brand name wax you used.

Thanks for the great idea Rob. I’m always looking for interesting challenges to put the skills you taught me and tools you provided me to the test. Prior to attending your course in 2019 I would never have considered a project like this, now it sounds like something fun and meaningful to do on a a Saturday afternoon, and I have confidence that I can achieve a similar quality. That is not an insult to your craftsmanship, it’s a testament to your mentorship, methodology, philosophy, and humanity. Love you brother!

@RobCosmanWoodworking

Absolutely you could make it from purple heart, but it wont stay purple. Over time it oxidizes and turns brown. You can refresh to purple by sanding or planing

Great to see you do a complete piece of work. Ash is a favourite timber and I agree with you about a simple wax finish. However I was disappointed with your use of plated cross head screws surely slotted brass screws would be more appropriate? 😃

The are robertson screws that will also accept phillips head. I would only use brass slotted screws if you were going to see them

So I have to ask. If the glass breaks at any point in the future, how do you replace it? You design does not allow for future accidents.

It was interesting to watch this but I wondered why you used plastic for the window rather than glass. Your design does not appear to permit its replacement if it gets scratched or warps or goes brittle. Glass could be fitted in a non-permanent way with an internal bolection moulding or it could be made a feature on the outside.
