The price of pedal boards is a joke, even Pedaltrain. Far too expensive for what they are. Build your own with strong wood that's light. They sure know how to suck the money out of guitarists. Power to the people n all that jazz. This is a good demo, but not a cheap option. You can order the power supply from China for £20 (£35 UK) and make you own board, all for a fraction of the price. Update: From more experience I reckon it would be better to invest in a decent (true isolated) power supply. Too much noise is created from the cheaper one's.

Argos 'duck board' from their bathroom section ( £9.99 ) makes for a good pedal board. Add 1 or two power supplies and a strip of velcro and you're good to go.

One piece of advice: rather than put the velcro on immediately, initially set your pedalboard up with no velcro so that you can experiment with the ordering and placement of the pedals more easily and without beginning to wear out your velcro. You will need to figure out what order gives you the desired the sound and what is the easiest placement for you to work with your feet. You should take some time messing around before you put the velcro on. There are plenty of books and articles about pedalboard order (I especially liked Dave Hunter's book "Guitar Effects Pedals" to learn about different pedals and ordering on your pedalboard), but in the end each rig's components will interact differently with each other and each guitarist will have a particular idea of what sound they are going for, so experimenting with the order will be important. Also, you have to figure out which pedals you will need to turn on/off in the middle of songs as well -- they should be in the front as much as possible, regardless of wiring order). If you leave the velcro off, you can easily move stuff around. I always keep some blank pedalboards around so that I can experiment before I actually make a gig pedalboard for a particular purpose -- that's when you are going to need your velcro.

One thing I just figured out with my board is putting the waw first then the buffer then the Big muff to the compressor, this made it finally sound really great and work together well. Putting the volume pedal AFTER the overdrives and EQ allowed me to not need a noise reduction pedal. So I sold off my ISP. The drives seem to like a full signal going in to them and it is so much less noisy cutting their output signal afterwards.

+2inchfromtheground i bet they outsourced the labor and materials, and it cost about $10 to make. You don't have to explain cost of doing business, I'm a business owner myself. what I mean is why pay $120 for nothing more than a piece of metal, when you can buy a self-powered, padded, cable organizing, durable carry case for $150 (I paid $80 for mine used) and I could fabricate a completely custom rail system that blows the train away for about $30 in materials.

If anyone is looking into buying pedalboards then i recommend the Furman SPB-8. It has LOTS of room, its powered (will run most pedals with built-in power, up to 8 at a time), has three AC outlets for 12 and 18 volt pedals, has ins/outs so you can easily plug into your effects loop (take it to your gig, plug in 4 cables, and your rig is done) AND it has a built-in Furman Power Conditioner that comes in handy at the bar gig with questionable electricity/outlets/grounding. Its a little older so on the used market you can get one for 70-80. I got one from Ryan the violinist from Blue October for helping to setup his pedalboard, and I love it.

A sales presentation for velcro-type boards and products.. Others use zip ties, clamps, or hardware that adapts pedals to "bolt down" schemes. Materials are available that are much cheaper than formed metal products, and you can save big bucks by exploring options. Anyone can get ripped off.

@guitarhowtos2148 6 жыл бұрын
Velcro is too expensive for me. I prefer to drill my own holes in a plain piece of elevated wood, then use zip ties to hold the pedals in place. Glue, clamps...even binder clips....are deployed to tidy up the wires.

The way I was taught, which might be totally wrong, is Guitar>Tuner>compressor>misc. pedals>Volume(/wah)pedal>noisegate>amp Whatever you do tuners and compressors should come first and volume pedals and noisegates last. IMO.
@wyburn21
@wyburn21 10 жыл бұрын
ArtfulDawdger Why would you put the tuner first? If you are going to put it in your signal chain then put it later (effects loop) so it will mute your guitar. If you have it before overdrive and distortion pedals you will still get audible noise from those pedals. I like to put it right before delay and reverb (using effects loop so it will be after amp distortion in the chain) so that you will still hear trails after your tuning. Honestly I'd rather have it on a tuner out or something like that (removing it from the signal chain) to keep it from messing with my tone. Delay and reverb belong last in the chain, after gates as well. I have always found that wah pedals belong BEFORE distortion or overdrive, but not necessarily volume pedals.
@jamesrogers9887
@jamesrogers9887 10 жыл бұрын
yeah but if you put the tuner first then you get the clearest signal so you get the best tuning, but i guess it depends on priority, better tuning or slight hum?
@wyburn21
@wyburn21 10 жыл бұрын
James Rogers You know I never thought about it picking up a better signal for more precise tuning, I'll have to look in on that! Maybe the ideal setup would be and aux setup (like an A/B box or a stereo out your not using) to get the best of both. I use a Snark pedal tuner that is one of the last in the chain and I have no problems with it picking up the signal for tuning but now I'm gonna try it before to see if it will pick it up better.
@CriticalMassCongregation
@CriticalMassCongregation 10 жыл бұрын
FreedomForever Yeah, I was always taught to put it first for a clean signal, but that's a great idea using it for a mute. I love my volume pedal for muting though so I wouldn't really need anything else. It actually a Morley combination wah/volume which is why I put my wah so far down the chain... because I have to! (its a bummer if you are 'right-footed' too) But I kindof like the wah so far down because it sounds good when I run other effects through it. But a tuner out or an AB/ABY setup would be the tits. Someday I will get a sick ass strobe tuner but I have about 1000 more bits of gear to get first :p

no noise gate or suppressor? Thats the #1 pedal necessary for playing with a chain as full as that under real-life circumstances. In that studio you could get away with it, but in a club having 20 pedals and no way to kill the noise would never work.

Great video, covered all the basics. I just finished building my 1st pedal board out of 3/4 inch plywood 10 in. x 24 in. with 2 xtra pieces of plywood screwed to 2 ends to raise the long end of the back of the board. Cost = zero. I then added 2 in. strips of velcro to the board and cut pieces of velcro and attached them to the back of pedals. Cost = $10 on Amazon. Its all powered by Truetone One Spot combo pack cost = $30 on Amazon plus a 6 pack of cheap patch cables cost = about $10 on Amazon. My pedals in order from guitar are Jimi Hendrix JH-1 Wah, Mooer Auto Wah, Mooer Tender Octaver, Joyo Ultimate Overdrive, Joyo Vintage Overdrive, BBE Tremor, TC electronic Flashback delay. Pedal cost = about $400. Its awesome to just plug in one wire and everything is ready to go. Running it thru a Fender Blues limited Ed amp. I use a Snark clip on tuner. Its working great with no unwanted noise. I'm a happy camper/guitarist.

I would use a patchbay on my pedalboard for the pedals that are going into the front of the amp, and the pedals that are going through the effects loop.

Correct title should be Watch me screw up building pedalboard. Anytime you build the cables you chance screwing up. In long run they come apart and make noise on a board. Buy good quality cables and a good pwr supply. Save problems for learning how to play guitar!

Shouldn't the boost go BEFORE the OD and distortion?
@redukonio
@redukonio 10 жыл бұрын
depends on what you like to boost. Sometimes OD`s and Distortions can't handle a very high input Signal. If the boost is only there to give a volume boost for solos or to help passing a long cable to the amp the shown order ist completely alright. :-)
@Thorbear632
@Thorbear632 10 жыл бұрын
Ma Rio If the boost is put BEFORE, it will add a little gain and grit along with volume to the OD right? After the OD and distortion it should just bump volume correct?
@nathansavage4128
@nathansavage4128 10 жыл бұрын
Thor Bear I think it's all relative on what pedals you use. I use a clean boast followed by different gain stages, then an equalizer to touch up the parameters and if I want use another boost pedal and it works for my front of amp chain.
@Thorbear632
@Thorbear632 10 жыл бұрын
Nathan Savage Thanks dude! I appreciate the response. BTW- I have a TC mini Spark boost, then a Fulltone OCD followed by a Carl Martin Plexi Tone or a Wampler Pinnacle Deluxe. My understanding is that if the boost comes before the OD, it'll add some grit as well as volume. If set up AFTER the OD and distortion, it'll just add volume. This sound correct?

Thank you for the video. Paul is very good a presenting information and this was very well done - I'm in the process of building my own. The first pedal sounded excellent but without having done the math, that's several hundred of dollars worth of gear! One question, would you be unplugging everything after a gig and putting it back together at the next gig? Does the pedal train come with a case? Keep up the good work Paul - enjoy your reviews.
