Great video, you should also reccomend that DIYers treat the wood that gets inserted into the ground with chemical to prevent rot. Also worth adding some gravel into the bottom of the hole to keep water from sitting around the post under the ground.

Kind of crazy, but this is one of very few videos on KZbin that covers how to make a traditional picket fence! I’ve been confused with how to go about making a smooth even run on an incline and your spacer would solve that issue no problem. Thanks for the video.

Hi Simon, & Mrs Simon, great to see you guys working together! I really enjoyed your video and I'm currently having to put in a fence, in January so I need all the help I can get! I am posting my fencing journey on my website and I've included all the things I learned from you there, so thank you! You asked for feedback and the only thing I feel I'd like to see more of is how you got to your material plan in the beginning, otherwise everything was just right for me! Almost forgot I have linked to your video from my site too.

This video is beyond awesome. Made what appears a hard task easy and achievable. Was super good also to have a visible list of all costs & what materials were used + their exact measures. As I am not from the US, would love there to be a measurement conversion to be using the metric scale as well.

Why didn’t you put the 2x4s over the face of the 4x4s so the pickets would continue over the 4x4 and hide the post?
@DaveE71715 ай бұрын
I agree and think I like that approach more.
@seanleecraig4 ай бұрын
Style. You're talking about two different styles of picket fence. This is traditional. The posts are a feature of the fence. Not to be hidden as they would be in a privacy fence.

You did great. It's worth it to rent a 1 man auger from HD for $40 for 4 hours and get the holes dug. You can pour the powdered cement in the hole and add water from a hose. Every body has a different way of doing things. I used a 4' level as the spacer/also kept it plumb. I like your home cut picketts.

Thanks for the video! I used this as a starting point to build a fence in our back yard so our dogs would have a place to run around. This was a great way to do it and it ended up saving me almost $3000 after getting a quote from a fencing company! My yard was a lot more unlevel than yours but I used the same concept for the rails and pickets and the fence still looks great!

I love this! I have been looking for fence ideas for our Circa 1840 home. We don’t want a typical modern fence. We want something that fits the time of the house. We were thinking of a farm type board fence...then I saw your picket fence and now I’m torn! I watched your whole video through and I feel kind of confident about attempting this type of project ourselves...except...my husband and I aren’t very knowledgeable of building things...I am a wiz at assembling things, but building using measurements is not a strong suit. But every homeowner needs to learn, right? Thank you for the inspiration! I subscribed to your channel and I look forward to learning new things from you!

Love the fence but I prefer the runners flush to the outside instead of centered. That allows pickets to attach to the posts as well so you don’t get spaces between the posts. You could add decorative post toppers in your manner
@SimonSaysDIY28 күн бұрын
That’s true. And I’m sure the picket spacing would be much easier that way.

Nice job thanks for the help. I’m planning on putting in a picket fence myself and this was so helpful. The hardest part for me would definitely be the hole. I have very clay like soil with what seems to be a 3-5 inch rocks every time I dig I hit a rock and it’s hard and very frustrating. The other tasks I know I can do no problem. Like I said it’s the holes. I need probably around 15 or so of them. Any ideas? Thank you. ❤
