Is it economical to build these barns if you do not have access to timber? We would have to purchase all of the wood at a lumberyard, Home depot etc.

Yes, it is. I would encourage you to look around locally for people with sawmills. There are a lot of small sawmills all over the country that would be happy to cut the timber package out for you. If you join our Barn Geeks DIY barn building tips group on Facebook you can ask on there as well, there are people with sawmills that are members there and would be happy to help you out. You probably could get the timbers special order at Home Depot or one of the other Big Box stores, but you will get better value, service, and quality from a small local sawmill.

this isn't true post and beam, or even timber framing. It's similar to stick framing with a lot of metal plates. What happened to mortise and tenon? Our ancestors didn't have metal plates. If we can't build as they did, what's the point?

WOW you do not understand this AT ALL. If you want a true Timber Frame then go out and Hire a very expensive company to build one. This is for the people that like that style and cannot afford hundreds of thousands of dollars. Ron USCG RET

By definition, timber frame is using mortise and tenon joints. Post and beam or pole barn construction is using steel plates for joining. In Washington, even timber frame buildings though are legally required to have a hidden steel plate for strength, and no, this is not similar to stick building which is when the entire wall is used to support the structure weight. This style is using only the posts and beams to hold the weight of all structure so any walls, doors, windows are all completely optional and can be positioned anywhere desired after the structure is up. Stick framing requires the doors, windows, and load bearing walls to all be built using specific construction to ensure the structure isn't compromised and severely limits the overall size of an open spanned area

The reason Mortise and Tennon Timber Framing is no longer the dominant construction method is because it takes a lot of labor, skill, and material to build. Therefore it cost too much for most people. My mission with Post and Beam, is to bring some of that class and character back to the mainstream. The only way to do that is to reduce those costs. Aaron said it was a “modified post and beam”. The guys is doing a great service to guys who want to mill their own lumber and build their own barn. He’s not trying to be some type of master craftsman chiseling out perfect mortise and tenons. His plans and methods are structurally sound.
