Excellent, excellent video!! The longest one you've ever made, thanks for the commitment!! I started working at a wholesale garden nursery where they grow more flowers than vegetables and have seen decline over the years. I asked a retail seller if more people were asking for vegetables to grow rather than flowers, as I do. He said "Yes! Younger people are starting to grow vegetables!" I want my employer to watch this video when his season winds down because he can premake those raised beds over the winter. He's only 38 and I want him to understand where the future is, but it's hard because his 70 year old parents are still running the place with him and are more resistant to change. I tell them they need to give the people what they ask for, not what YOU want them to buy. This video is beginner level, which he needs because organic gardening is not a concept he is familiar with. Perfect timing too! I'm going to give him some Malibar spinach that I started in my seed room to grow over the summer and hopefully point him in the right direction! Thanks John!!

John is such an inspiration. I've been watching his videos for 2 straight weeks now. Since then I have started two urban gardens. Though I come from a family of early farmers---I never thought Id be so fired up about growing my own food. Its mostly because Ima Chef, a Baker and I'm fed up with the crap they sell in stores and over expensive "high-end" specialty markets. Famers markets should be EVERYDAY of the WEEK!! I've been around long enough to have seen fruit trees and wild berries grow all throughout Oakland(CALI)----and then out of no where---trees were cut down---berry vines were pulled out and the emergence of Wholefoods and GRocery stores became a thing. It's been a really crazy thing to see unfold over the years. Humans just need to take back their humanity, their life and grow your own stuff. John keep on doing what you're doing bro---A lil dirt dont hurt!

I’m in Cali, as well, and with 6 yrs behind us since this video posted, we now know why this was happening. They want to be able to choke off our food supplies at will. Farming is too independent for their liking. The OWG they envision will only work if we’re all dependent on them for everything, including food. (Was going to say ‘food and medicine, but food IS medicine, when it’s real, not lab altered to be GMO or vaxx veggies, which have become a real thing, in the US, Canada and Mexico.

Three years ago I started getting into gardening because my young daughter took an interest in her Paw Paw's garden and I thought it would be neat for her to see it all happen at home. It's something I never thought about doing myself and I think I've enjoyed it more than she has. I built two beds, 10'x4'x12", out of cedar fence boards and filled them with the mix recommended by yourself and Mel Bartholomew. I used Black Hen, Black Kow, and mushroom compost mixed with peat moss and vermiculite/perlite. I've had extremely good success and my daughter has really enjoyed seeing all the plants growing and learning about them. I haven't ever used any rock dust or worm castings, but it's something to keep in mind for next year. Anyway, keep the videos coming and from one TKE brother (assuming from a sweatshirt you wore in a previous video) to another, keep doing what you love.

I tried the "Kellogg' Raised Bed Potting Mix" i bought from HD because it was the only OMRI mix i found there and the price was reasonable. I felt confident because you had used it and HD usually does their homework and i just believe gardeners in general are a decent sort of people and i use enough soil mixes and amendments i usually have zero issues. I did not end up with a "good lot of bags" i guess. I bought 6 bags this year because i was expanding my garden to include a neighbor' raised beds. First of i have never in my many years of gardening had issues with germination and growing because my garden has always been small enough i could rationalize buying a better product like Coast O' ME to amend last years beds and i've always had productive gardens. I thought the Kellogg Mix had a bit of a strong odor but used the mix anyway. First off my indoor Burpee Zucchini seed starts and others did not start and after 3 weeks i had to throw out my seed starts. Next, i have been very concerned with the slow growth in the garden where i had direct seeded as usual. I am still hoping i can gain time/growth and accelerate the garden growth to catch up with my expectations and previous successes with side-dressing using Coast O' ME Platinum and other high quality soil amendments. I am really disappointed with Kellogg. I believe the kellogg potting mix was not a finished product. Whatever compost was in the mix needed more time to age properly. So far my garden is off to a slow start. I am side dressing early and spending more time and money than i had thought i would this year but i'm not giving up. John i hope i don't sound disappointed or that i'm blaming you in any way. I'm just looking for the lessons i need to learn this year and letting people know to always buy with a little caution. Who would have doubted... ? Thanks. I do appreciate your gardening videos, you cover a full range of topics and have answered my many questions. One day i am going to plant a purple carrot and maybe an Indigo Apple Tomato. Love your visits with experts and your vision. Thanks again

Oh fyi if you do a back to Eden garden with wood chips, you can get them for free from any tree companies. Call around your local area, I just got 10 truck loads, had to load them myself, completely free!! I now have a beautiful till free, back to Eden garden for free!!!! Hola! Thanks for all the effort and passion you put to make these videos, although they're long, they're so informative (I have zero knowledge on gardening or farming, but I do want to teach my children to be more conscious on their waste and I definitely think that every human should be able to grow his own food), I've been playing them in the mornings so my kids and I can hear you and soak up the information while I'm making and eating breakfast. To everyone else who's complaining, this is his HIS channel, people make videos to share their passions and hopefully other will find it useful, so what you see is truly him, the way he is going to talk to you as if he was next to you, I'm ok with his accent and remarks and I find it pleasant to hear him while having breakfast, others don't, just do as you guys would do in real life, when you dislike someone or you either suck it up or leave, but I guess is easier to just complaint when you don't have to say things in their faces, right? Don't compare with others editing either, unless you're paying, you can't dictate how others should express their knowledge. This is KZbin! Don't expect to find TV like presenters/editing in every channel.

Thank you, John!! You so generously built me a raised bed for free years ago in Santa Cruz and also made a super delicious meal. Was just thinking about it so searched KZbin to try to find that video. Found this one and this one is really great too; watched most of it and learned a lot as I've helped with a bunch of gardens since then but not really had my own again YET. Hope you are well! Keep up the awesome work! So sorry you get mean comments. Growing food is a huge deal, especially now with raising food prices and some shelves looking a bit too empty at grocery stores. Of course farmer's markets and health-conscious businesses are also wonderful to support.🌿🥭🍅🥕🍠🥝🍉 P.S. Anyone know if raised beds can work well on a balcony? I don't know the weight. No grass under of course. So guess needs a bottom? There's a grassy yard here too as an option but unsure it's sunny enough.

I think you are really cool. Long winded but cool. I watch you regularly and learn alot. You give me the confidence to start my garden. I have a brown thumb, but I am determined to learn what mistakes I am making by listening to you. I started growing broccoli, spinach, strawberries, green peppers, and more yesterday from the seed. I am excited!! My 9 year old and I just started our compost. Keep up the great work because people like me need knowledgeable people like you. Thank you!!

Been watching your videos for a few weeks and its really jump started a desire to grow some food. I dont eat a whole lot of vegetables at the moment and probably wont ever get close to being a vegetarian but I would like to grow a lot of the stuff that I like to eat and experiment with some others. If you would have told me two years ago that I would be anxious for an online order of worm poo to be dropped on my doorstep I would have thought you were crazy. Just wanted to say thanks for the videos and its nice to see you so excited to help people start their gardens.

I went cheap... bought Scott's dirt (it was very black and packed- $1.92 per bag), and Black Kow cow manure for my raised bed. I'll be making my own compost using leaves, grass, and other bio-matter for next year. I had to do a raised bed because my yard has a very high clay content, so even if this garden isn't the best quality, it's still 1000% better than growing a garden in my yard. A lot of info in this video. Thank you, for doing this video, and I'm sure that some of the info I will use, even if it's subconciously.

Austin! I'm out in the Bastrop area an hour east of Austin on 10 wooded acres and after some nice success in a very small garden next to the house ( ) am ready to get started on something bigger. I'm very motivated after watching your video on what you can grow in the heat of Las Vegas. The heat in central Texas is much the same. Can wait to get serious.

i just bought 8 cedar fence boards cut the dogears off and got a 1x2 piece of cedar and cut it to 12 inch pieces and used them for corner braces and also in the center of each board stacked them 2 high costs me 25$ 6 1/2' x 6 1/2' x 12" tall. used a screw gun and circular caw (if you dont have a saw to cut off dog ears you can cut them at HD or lowes they have saws set up for cutting material and they will cut them off for you if you ask). pre drill the holes and use 1 1/4'' screws to put it together. i used 6 per corner and 4 per middle brace to make sure the soil doesnt pus out on the sides.
