This is the strongest gantry CNC I have seen yet, I am in the process of making one similar to this.

True, I always thought of this as the right thing, the gantry should remain stationary while work should move. This way, the job will be more accurate

3:49 - does it not take years for cast iron to stress relief after annealing?

Maybee! Well, a print on that plate says, it was cast in former Eastern Germany. Germany was reunited in 1990 - so no worries - that plate was build in the 80s or ealier.

I would be very interested in CAD files! I've concluded that a rigid gantry CNC is all that's going to work well for the thicker Aluminium projects I would like to try. You Germans though....you are so lucky with the amount of good quality, second hand equipment you have available, not to mention places to get quality machining manufacturing performed as a service. The things I see getting collected as 'scrap yard' items by the 'Post Apocalyptic Inventor' youtube channel are better than most of the new items for sale here in Australia, and we have almost no manufacturing industry worth speaking of now :-(
thanks for sharing, very nice. maybee it is an idea to pour out the hollow colum parts with thin resin (do not shrink, easy to pour). should result in less noise.

Great Machine Why didn't you make the portal movable? With this design, the machining area is much smaller. Have you by any chance made a calculation of the two concepts regarding stability?

The linear bearings are from Schnneberger MR35 and MR 25. They are pretty decent.I recycled them from a Deckel DC 100V, which is a 10 tons machine.

Schwingt da das gesamte Gehäuse etwas mit wenn du Stahl fräst? Wie ist das mit der Dämpfung?

Es schwingt hauptsächlich die X-Achse. Ich denke meine Kugelumlaufspindel hat zu viel Spiel. Ich werde sie wohl ersetzen müssen.

Do you have problems with chips getting into the threaded holes of the machine bed? Mine is aluminum and I’m not sure I want steel chips getting in there. Not sure what to do yet. Also could you share your weld stress relief temperature profile?

No problems with chips. I just use an air gun to blow them out. I used a pottery oven for heat treatment. I heated the steel for 6 hours and let it cool down over night. (sorry, no fancy relief profile)

Great job so far. I would love to get the CAD files for this, even though sharing these means that you might get A LOT of stupid questions. Speaking of stupid questions, I already have one. You spoke about heat treating the parts, did that simply mean tempering (Anlassglühen bzw. Entspannen) or was it actual hardening (Härten)? Schönen Sonntag noch!

Short answer in English: I heated the welded parts for about 4 hours at 580°C and let it slowly cool down to room temperature over night. Deutsch ist für mich viel einfacher: Durch das Schweißen wird der Stahl sehr unterschiedlich erwärmt. Hierdurch entstehen Spannungen im Material (unterschiedliche Wärmeausdehnung), die im Laufe der Zeit langsam frei und das Bauteil verformen würden. Das möchte man natürlich nicht bei präzisen Flächen, die die Geometrie der Maschine bilden. Daher bringt man das Bauteil für mehrere Stunden auf eine Temperatur um 580 Grad, bei der sich die Spannungen im jetzt weichen Stahl setzen. Nach dem langsamen Abkühlen ist das Material "spannungsarm" und verzieht sich hoffentlich nicht mehr. Eine Alternative, wenn man viel Zeit hat, wäre das Bauteil nach dem Schweißen für 20 Jahre im Garten zu vergraben. Beim Härten würde der Stahl schnell in Wasser oder Öl abgekühlt, also genau das Gegenteil. Das wollen wir hier aber nicht, denn dann hätten wir wieder Spannungen im Material.

Ich habe die Stunden nicht gezählt. Es ging aber relativ flott. Ich habe LinuxCNC gewählt, da ich eine Echtzeitsteuerung wollte - mehr im nächsten Video.

Die Konstruktion ist natürlich schon gut massiv, in wieweit das noch DIY ist, der nicht über einen Maschinenpark verfügt, muß jeder selber entscheiden. Die 2,2kw Spindel ist jetzt für Metall nicht optimal, zu schnell oder zu wenig Drehmoment wenn sie langsam laufen soll. Dabei das Problem kennen wir ja alle im Selbstbau…. Aber sie sieht sehr gut aus und ich schaue mir gerne weitere Teile an 😀
