Attaching the frame to the building without help is tricky. Here's an idea though: 1) Make a horizontal, level line on the building, representing the bottom front of the framing (prob. 2x4). 2) Attach a temp. 2x4 to the building, the top of which is along that line. This will support the front of the framing while you are attaching it. Now figure the height of the back frame from the top of the 2x4 to the ground and attach two 1" boards with that same length. This will support the back while attaching to the building. 3) Lift front of frame up into place along 2x4 support, and attach frame. You can then go ahead and remove that temp. 2x4 support, but attach the 2 angled supports to the frame and building before removing the back 2 supports.

@@SecondSonWoodworks Thanks. I also replaced an old 36" steel door myself. I first needed to rebuild the frame for the opening, as the new, prehung door was slightly taller. I originally wanted a carpenter to do this (and the door awning), but he was busy, and I got tired of waiting. It can be done. Yes, it probably took me 3x (or more) as long as it would a professional. The main thing is not to injure oneself. Don't rush.

Yeah was thinking along similar lines. Just like when building much heavier "lean to"; attach 1 beam across the back wall but without all the "arms" on which make it difficult to handle. Then cut the crows nest into the arms and screw them into the beam from the top. It's so useful to see and learn from these examples before doing it yourself so that ks so much for the video 👍

I found out that you can turn the blade around in your 7 14 saw and that will cut the metal. I just cut my corrugated roof material for my awning, and the reverse saw blade trick works magic!

Is this legit?
@m_cabral16 күн бұрын
@@Nath-sn1mv wood working blades often work for aluminum. Just check the blade’s markings (or the website of the label is worn off). I don’t think you’d want to turn it around but I don’t know the specific trick he’s talking about. There are steel specific metal blades in circular saw sizes. $22 from Home Depot as of 2024 and a bit more from others if you want an increasingly nicer blade.

I like this, it's simple and straightforward. The only question I have is, do you think it needs some kind of flashing at the top against the building? I notice your building does not have an overhang, won't rain tend to run down the side and go behind this roof and find its way into your screw holes?
@SecondSonWoodworks5 жыл бұрын
DontTrackMe Bro thanks! Great observation, I would certainly recommend flashing on the top. I ran out of time to add that into the video. And in terms of screws, use the metal roof self drilling and sealing screws, they have rubber at the top of the shaft which seal the hole.

Just subscribed, thank you for being so straightforward! I'm needing one of these over a sliding glass door that's elevated about one meter. I was trying to figure out how to do it by myself. I don't have a miter saw but I do have a speed square. I think we have enough brain power, just to be dangerous!

How did you find the stud on the building? And so quickly? I was looking carefully to see this. I am thinking of doing this over the front and back doors of a mobile home we are converting for a Airbnb. Our theme is "Rustic"
@SecondSonWoodworks Жыл бұрын
The studs were exposed on the inside of the garage so I knew generally where they were. You could also use a stud finder. Good luck!

Well look, man, the presentation was great but the work itself was not great. A little more effort on measurements could have yielded an awning that was true because it rested on support arms that were the same angle as one another. Instead one of your support arms is coming off of your house 2 in lower than the other even though you're siding makes a fine indicator for matching the height perfectly without even needing a tape measure
