Build an Awning Frame from Wood - Workshop Renovation Series

Build a wall mounted awning frame with a steel roof attached to the side wall of a workshop. I built the awning frame from standard framing lumber, primed, and painted them with exterior enamel paint, then attached them to the wall with GRK structural washer head screws. This is an easy DIY project to create a covered space on the side of any building with a frame from wood. This is part 5 of my workshop renovation series.

Probably the best Ryan’s kzbin.infoUgkxGZedDTcDfgD7fG_uU4esfx_EgxzlY2_1 Plans on building a shed is hardly ever found. And Ryan takes the mystery out of different types of foundation options, etc. He even shows how to build a shed with different designs. Very comprehensive, covering different roofing materials, siding, etc.

Fantastic! Thanks so much. I've been trying to find a way to cover both ends of our screened in porch when it rains. This fits it to the t'. I've got some leftover metal roofing and they will fit nicely. Thanks for not having blaring music playing during instruction. Can't wait to download the instructions. Have a great day!

I loved this video. Small victories big reward. I am thinking about making an awning for our back door and also, recently learned about flashings. I think is the right word you said. The instruction was excellent. Lumber is crazy. Like you, I use what I have and recently made a shelf and prep top bench outta raw cedar because one, I love raw cedar and two, it's what I had on hand. Even without the cost, there is something for me that I truly love about using up what I have. That said, I also like getting new wood too. I have a trip coming up as a reward to buy more raw cedar once I finish a current project. Anyway, longest comment in the history of ever. Thank you for this video. Cheers, Ivy.

It looks excellent and well planned out! I suspect that some people will comment about the placement of the roofing screws in the valleys rather than the ridges. The thought is that the rubber washers eventually degrade and the lower spots in the roof are more likely to have water flow leading to more potential for leakage. Personally, I don’t think that’s an issue here at all, especially given that it is an awning and not an enclosed structure. I also love those GRKs. Nice work!
@MANaboutTOOLS
@MANaboutTOOLS 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! After reading many thoughts on the roofing screw location I believe the best location is on the flats. On the ridges will distort the metal when torqued. And, the rubber will degrade over time in both cases.

Very professional! As luck would have it - I have hundreds of extra 2" x 4" x 95 5/8" studs in a big stack from cancelled project. I will rip these studs down the center on my table saw to get 2 nearly 3/4" (1 x 4) pieces I will use as slats to support my metal roof. I like how you showed angles, how many pieces you could get per stud, and even your screw angles. The way you painted that wood beforehand was highly efficient, keeping your from having to awkwardly paint things later on in that confined space you described. But how did you find the stud locations of your exterior wall? My structure is a 2-car garage with cinder block walls. I will will make pilot holes through my angle braces, start to drill through onto my block, so I can see where the holes line up, switch to masonry bits and through-drill. I will gently hammer expansion collars into these holes, then go back and use Tapcon screws through my braces using nutdriver bit. These hold an incredible amount of weight which allows me to space 32" O.C. This then saves me more material! I'm also adding heavy duty roofing felt under the metal roofing material as an added precaution in case any water gets under the metal roof.
