I thought I heard some Hawai’i accent. Aloha Ahiahi. I’m watching this at 7:00pm HST on 1/13/2022. I really want to do what you do. I’m looking at a 2005 Outback XT manual or 2019 Crosstrek. Both are lifted with off-road all terrain tires. I have watched several different build videos and I am probably going to build out one side and keep the other low for more headroom. Mahalo for the video.

Yep, Big Island. Get out there and have fun! The world has so many amazing things to see. I watched a million buildout vids before I basically just bought wood and whipped out this platform. Everyone has a bit different needs so hopefully you can get ideas and them create your own version. Aloha

The platform looks great. Personally, i prefer to sit on a flat surface (like, the ground) rather than a chair, so id make a fixed platform all the way through. That said, i love seeing how different ppl with different needs find ways to make a conversion their own and don't just copy something. :)

I’ve slept on it hundreds of nights so far and really can’t think of much to make it better for my vehicle and needs. More space is always a need and a little more headroom when sleeping would be nice, but my wheel wells determined my height for a flat surface two could sleep on. If you build one with some new features lmk how it works as you utilize it. Best wishes!

At last some one who had the same plan as me. I have had four jeeps in the UK, and the first Jeep, a Cherokee 2.5 XJ. Had the most usable room. I need to sit down in the vehicle during the day if raining and chill. What you produced is perfect for that reason. You can even remove the cassettes as I call them if not going away as store them in a garage. Why people religiously sheet over the useable width of the rear of vehicle for a fixed bed is totally beyond me.

Good morning. I love your center aisle system. It's exactly what I was looking to do. I have a Nissan Patrol and a dog! And this corridor system would allow my dog to have a place in the middle when we are riding... But I think the Toyota is wider. Can you tell me the width of each platform and the corridor...? Thank you
@brownworld26055 ай бұрын
Sorry I missed this question. My entire platform is 48” wide. 16” per section. I recently built out a sequoia for my new travel vehicle. I needed a bigger vehicle I made 1 side 24”. This way my sleeping mattress would fit without me needing to put center piece in every time. It was easier so I wouldn’t need to put everything away to move and could leave my bed set up most of the time. Good luck!!
@ShanLiuGBM3 жыл бұрын
Hello there, I like the design very much, but, I think your plywood structure would last a lot longer if you had alternating wooden tool boxes from each side that slides into the aisle to meet in the middle to act as support for the center. I know you must be in very good shape since you are into mountain biking and all, but plywood do tend to start sagging after a while, and since you have that tool box already, why not let it be full support?, if the tool box can take an additional wing to each side, even one tool box worth of support would be a great addition, or maybe I am just jealous at how flat the floor looks. I have a sienna converted, and I wish I had flat space like that.
@brownworld26053 жыл бұрын
The 2x8 structure up front where rear seats were located provides tons of support. The toolbox has a lip for support, there is also one right across from tool box and the two I show at rear. It is very solid and doesn’t sag or shimmy whatsoever. I’m 6-7 years in with it and it is as solid as day one. I also recently posted a vid. About baja expedition we did for 4 weeks and I slept on it 26 of 28 days. I’m very happy with it. ***** also I finally painted it!!!! Yay!!!!******

It should fit your height. It’s over 6’ long. 4th gens are bigger in every dimension so might be better choice if you’re still shopping around. This design will work in any vehicle just need to adjust for vehicle choice. Also good to buy your storage bins first so you can make sure they fit perfectly with no wasted space.,

This I think great as single and fur babies. To 1 to see my BF in NC which is 15 hours + Dr. I cannot drive all that at once. To trying to find hotels with pets not easy. So you did good on this layout I like area in between to could be one big bed at night for all me & babies. How is Hawaii? I went in 5th grade. So Gorgeous wanna go bk. How is cost of living there? Great Job I'd probably do some chalk paint etc to spruce up a bit more if gonna do. Love all storage so needed no doubt. Thank You for sharing. Be Safe and have lots of Fun. 😀🙌

Thanks for response. Just got back from month In 4Runner camping throughout Baja. Can’t really think of anything I would change in platform. Hawaii is nice. Like most things cost of living is determined by where you are and the lifestyle you choose. It’s quite affordable for me but I live in a rural area, am quite simple and don’t have a beach a few minutes from my house. Hawaii can be astronomically expensive or cheaper than many places on the mainland.

what do you use for heat on colder nights?
@brownworld26052 жыл бұрын
Good sleeping bag is essential. When it’s really cold (around freezing) I turn on 4Runner and Bakst the heat for about 10-15 minutes. This usually last 3-4 hrs until it needs to be reheated. I don’t really do much cold weather camping.

@brownworld26057 ай бұрын
Your aisle may not be sturdy. If both sides are independent then when you put in middle section the may move out of position. Also 12” in most suv is really high. Try putting something your estimated finished height and sit on it to see if it work for you( headroom). Higher platforms give you more storage but sleeping or hanging out might be unpleasant. Always trade offs you need to consider. Good luck

@brownworld26053 жыл бұрын
RAV4 is quite short. Unless you are willing to use a tent or take out passenger seat. Vans can be really good if you want to stay on smoother roads. If you are a solo traveler consider taking out passenger seat so you can lay all the way down. Vehicles are quite expensive now and the older RAV4 is a neat Toyota. Maybe you can make it work depending on your needs and how long you plan to travel. Good luck.

Yes. Only in the back to the 2 cargo eyes. It’s never shifted in 50k miles with tons of off road rattling and some pretty significant angles going over terrain. I’m building a new platform for my sequoia it’s bolted on every corner.

@@brownworld2605 Thank you!!!! I been wanting to build one in my SUV but not really looking forward to drilling.
@brownworld260511 ай бұрын
If you remove seats, look around. There should be a few bolts already there for seats, cargo tie downs etc you can utilize. You will most likely need to buy a longer bolt but the threaded nut portion will be in the body from the factory. So no drilling into vehicle needed. Good luck and enjoy the camping adventures . 😀😀

@brownworld26053 жыл бұрын
No, I don’t. It’s pretty straightforward though. Bottom piece goes until where back seat area dips down. Top piece a inch or so before drivers seat in all the way back position. If you have a factory carpet for rear cargo area it’s a good template for around wheel wells etc. Just spent 26 nights sleeping/traveling in 4Runner through Baja Mexico. Really happy with platform!!

Where is spare tyre if you get a puncture
@brownworld26053 жыл бұрын
On the 4Runner the tire is under the vehicle in the back. It is accessed from outside the vehicle like a truck.
