With the fuel delivery issues solved, I'm sure it'll be a good engine for you. You should watch Robot Cantina where Jimbo pushes an old french car along the Kansas country side at a good clip. For your setup, I think you could probably get away with a 1:1 drive. With 1st gear winding out that quick, you can certainly trade some of that rpm for speed. Jimbo uses a heavy duty torq-a-verter setup and I think either going 1:1 with your current setup or going with the 'verter setup would make you a much happier camper. Thanks for sharing!

@@ChrisfromKeyfarmalso there's allot that you need to do to get the predator to run right for this application. You need to take the governor off, also you need to change out the carburetor set up. Like op said Robot Cantina shows how to do that. Just thought I'd add this information because you can get more power outta that engine. But you will have to do some modifications to it to get the performance that you're looking for. Don't give up on it. If it was my car I would of found a Honda motor cycle engine for it.

I'm interested in liter class motorcycle engines in Midgets, as it's more natural to upgrade the horsepower than downgrade them, and the motorcycle engines are lighter than the cast iron MG/BMC/Triumph blocks (especially the 1500 Triumph block that would have come in your Midget originally) and usually more horse power than original. And if you're careful with how they're mounted, and get the right engine, you might have a sleeper, 120+ HP engine in a car made for 60. As for the indicators/signals, my 77 Midget is also de-bumpered and de-indicatored, I that includes the side lights and front indicators on the face of the car, and used headlights that have multiple lights in them, like LED bulbs and have the yellow ring around the bulb as the turn signal. Works great.

I really enjoyed the build. I have built. Four golf cart projects for me, my brother and two of my cousins. Two have Predator 420cc engines and the others have Predator 670cc engines. I like the 420cc better in every way. I think your Midget would be more driveable with a golf cart style primary and secondary clutch set up. It would give a wider range of speed and power between shifts of the transmission. When i first did the 420cc conversation on my golf cart, i used a cheap 40 series primary and the stock secondary. The performance was terrible. A Comet 780R, a CV Tec secondary and a G Force belt made a world of difference. Just food for thought.

You make some good points about the Duromax vs the Predator. Why not go twin Duromax? You might have to get a little creative with the packaging, but you'd have a much better final result, and some redundancy to make it home on one engine if you needed to for whatever reason. You'd also have the extra torque divided between two clutches, so the 1:1.5 - 1:1 gear ratio that you need wouldn't be a problem.

If you ever ditch the 670, try a Harly engine. They make a lot of low-end torque and sound nice. But if you do keep it, use a 40 series torque converter. They are heavy duty and can handle a 1:1.
@ChrisfromKeyfarmАй бұрын
All good ideas , I don't really like torque converters though. Thanks for watching
@hillonwheels8838Ай бұрын
The 670 can make some awesome power but I don't know if the money it takes to make that power is worth it for what you are doing. I'm sure you have seen Cars and Cameras drag rail, they have a tone of money in it and it always seems to be on the verge of blowing up. If I were to do this I think the twin carb kit on the 670 is a good all around performance to price if you can sync the carbs so each cylinder gets the same air fuel. I would like to do this conversion with a 10hp single cylinder air cooled diesel engine.
@ChrisfromKeyfarmАй бұрын
I have seen a couple of other channels do some really great stuff with the 670 but for me it's just not worth it for the money. A dual carb kit at the bare minimum is $350.00

I went with the 20hp Briggs and Stratton 656 vtwin on my rat rod kart and as long as you keep an eye on the oil it does great ... Sometimes the " bigger name brand " suggestions isnt always the way to go but instead the actual lawnmower engines with the right mods can be even better because they are literally built for high torque applications and though they tend to top out around 4000-4500rpms - thats with the governor , the 656 vtwin still has 20hp stock but its got over 31 ft pounds of torque and its built for turning heavy steel blades for a long period of time in the heat instead of the oredator go kart motors being built for higher rpms but having less torque and definitely a lot less durability ... You should just do like i did and turn a B&S 20hp vtwin into a sideshaft engine for less than $40 and , a lot of your performance parts off the predator 670 will fit onto the B&S 656/676 platform ... I'm running an old school high performance 15 tooth centrifugal clutch , 40/41/420 chain with a 60Tooth final gear on a 120 lb gokart frame 😂 and im waiting for the new ignition switch and 42 tooth rear sprocket to get here tomorrow but even with my 60 tooth rear sprocket and 12" tires , im still pushing around 55mph - wide open and NON governed of course 😂... Im hoping to get around 65-70 out of it with the 42 tooth final gear but who knows maybe more and if i can find another 36 tooth final gear for it im sure it would hit 70 no problem haha ... Well still a cool little car and hopefully the next engine you put on it will work out a little better for you ...

So the thing about this is getting these cars moving for cheap that's why normally I use anywhere from a $150 motor to a $400 motor The Predator 670 does cost more but I already had it The 999 cost $2,000 for that I could put in a real nice MG engine which would defeat the purpose cost wise of doing a swap. My goodness for $2,000 I could put in a vortec 53 and just build the car back around it.

There is a lot you can do to make that 670 run properly. No disrespect, but it's not wonder you don't feel happy with it, the way it sits. A proper fuel system, carb and exhaust to start, would make a huge difference. A cvt would help a lot too. Give this engine a chance. if you're into it, check out Robot Cantinas's channel. After watching this video I tried googling the engine you put in the MGB, I'm not that familiar with small engines and put in Duramax. After learning how to spell DuroMax, If you decide to get rid of the Predator, you might try one of the V-Twin Duromaxs, either the XP23HPE, which seems like a DuroMax equivalent of the engine you're using, or the the DuroMax XP35HPE, because a little more power is nice to have. If the Predator has made you leery of multiple cylinders, you could try the DuroMax XP20HPE, Its pretty much like the XP18HPE with a few more CC and allegedly 2 extra horsepower.

I appreciate you looking into that, I have looked at some of those Duromax twin cylinder engines and they get quite pricey as far as the Duramax 20 horsepower it has the same amount of torque as 18. I'm thinking about perhaps just modifying one of these Duramax 18s that I like so much.

Imagine what would the speed would be if you had a torque converter in front of that 4 speed
@ChrisfromKeyfarmАй бұрын
I'm not a fan of torque converters too many moving parts and the one I have causes all kind of problems

Build the motor there are tons of videos on how to make a high horse 670 predator a suggested you do that so you can get the most out of the motor
@ChrisfromKeyfarmАй бұрын
I have seen several of those videos , it just about doubles the price of the engine , which by that point you could have put real HP in the car.

@ChrisfromKeyfarm got a better idea then build a high horse Duramax 440
