I totally hit subscribe the second you made the commercial (w)rappers comment. Grew up on a Grampian 26 and just bought my own first boat. Looking forward to learning from you.

That pipe is called pvc. Schedule 40 water pipe. The electrical conduit is Grey in color. Either way, it will work for what you want it for.

Alan, I have done this cover with an old 19 footer I had and mine didn't look nearly as awesome e as yours. The Devils in the details. Would you add a video underscoring how you decided on length of each piece, height above cabin, tarp material and weight, how you attached the tarp, and perhaps a picture of the boat after tarped. just hoping to learn from your expertise. thanks, Chris Clark O'Day 26 "Jack Lucky"

Hers an idea. Instead of just talking about it, maybe show the actual structure.

"The first step is decide how many of these ribs you want along the length of the hull" then nothing on how he determined his nor length of pipe! At lease I found in the comments "bendable pipe" translates to schedule 40 water pipe. With no idea on lengths I'm opting for a coil of poly pipe (used for ponds). Then making a frame that may be a combination of two other videos I've seen.
@BudgetBoatCruising7 жыл бұрын
I bought the tarp on sale for about $30 and the frame cost me about the same. The tarp clips you can get from the dollar store. Don't rely on the grommets that come with the tarp. The poly lines also came from there. I hope this helps. Allan

Drill the pipe and add zip ties? How you attach the cross bars...the most critical part, and you say drill and use zip ties? I appreciate the effort though..

Enjoyed your video insight to boat covering. Question; I'm new to cold WI winter covering and was wondering if a medium grade or heavy grade tarp would be better? You mentioned "medium," is that enough?
@GrampianMarine3 жыл бұрын
Hi Erich, I'm glad you are enjoying the vids. It's strange you posted as you did because the winters appear to becoming more severe so a heavy-duty tarp would be best. I'm currently using a semi-transparent plastic tarp (not woven) with material re-enforcements every inch. The grommets still pop off though. Fair winds and stay safe. Allan

@@GrampianMarine Thanks for your reply, was wondering if there was any difference between the two other than strength and durability

@@erichreinl2965 Price. You know the old saying; strength, durability, price. pick two.
@hijack86042 жыл бұрын
Well..... this seems like an easy answer. The heavier duty the better. This theory can work with most things in life as far as life expectancy. I mean, wind, snow, rain pooling all this will come into play when deciding what MIL thickness to purchase. I mean hey, if the price is not much more, just get the better one and you most likely wont have to replace it sooner than the cheaper quality one.

I have a 14ft allumin boat I'm trying to make a canopy on the top I have the flexible pipes,noodles and fittings I just need to know what height and everything it would need to be?
@MarzipanProductions6 жыл бұрын
By canopy, do you mean a bimini? If you do then the size would be no more than the beam across and perhaps standing height if you stand in your boat. I hope this helps. A

Hi! I am not able to find you tarp for a boat with mast up.
@GrampianMarine3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sunil, I found the video for you. If you go to my videos, it's towards the bottom of my first page. Here is the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYmUenmrlJakfs0 I'll be updating the video this fall (it's almost 10 years old). Here's a free preview. I now tarp the boat with three smaller tarps. The width of each tarp should be the beam of the boat plus any extra length to go over the boom or cabin. The width should be more than a third of the length of the boat. One tarp goes over the bow to the mast. The second from the mast to the cockpit and the third should cover the cockpit. Special hint: Leave a hole on either end (bow and stern to let the wind blow through). I know that sounds strange but it prevents the tarp from becoming a sail in a gale. Fair winds, Alan

Hi Alan, is this a "snow / very cold weather" thing?
@GrampianMarine6 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, I'm not sure what you mean. Tarping a boat or building a frame. In the cold weather regions, tarps are used to keep the ice, rain and snow off your boat. If you don't frame them, they either fly away or compress to the shape of your boat where puddles form, then freeze causing possible damage. Some people shrink wrap their boats but that is a very carbon-heavy, expensive one-time use. Either way, they need framing. I hope this helps. Allan

Why tarp it at all what’s the purpose?
@GrampianMarine3 жыл бұрын
A good question Josh. First, I live in Canada and having piles of snow thawing on your deck can easily slowly damage the fibreglass and the water make its way into through-hull that can damage the core of the boat. The thaw can also fill the cockpit with water and if there is a sudden solid freeze there will be permanent and perhaps fatal damage to the hull. Plus, with a tarp over I am free to work in the cockpit and cabin when the weather is warm enough and the sun heats up inside the tarp. Cosy.
