I'm really not sure gutting an OEM prebuilt is the best suggestion for a first time builder (especially since many of them these days don't have 24 pin connectors and weird pinouts for power buttons etc). I've been building rigs for over a decade and even I wouldn't bother doing it. $100 was a banging deal for the prebuilt for the CPU alone - could have probably found a cheap h310 or b360/5 motherboard to use for another $50-60 and saved the jankiness! Then find a box cutter i3-8100 and some crap ram/ssd to drop back into the prebuilt and sell it on.

I went with a z590/i3-10105 for my son, big jump from the 3770/H61 combo he was running previously (only reason why I snagged the z590 was it being combined w/ the i3 for $150 - some good upgrade path and can get the XMP out of his memory kits).

I can't see putting this in an case with ARGB and tempered glass at all, I mean if you're going to have this much jank, I'd at least cover it up. I can think of a few case options that would do just that and still have good airflow, but like you said just getting the CPU for $100 and pairing with cheap budget motherboard, would be the best option.

A good friend of mine asked me if I could build him a cheap gaming PC for esports games. So I went on the hardware hunt. After about 2 weeks I had all the parts together. In the end, I ended up with a total of 180€ (294 Australian Dollar). I think the result is worth it. MSI A320m-A PRO AM4 motherboard, AMD Ryzen 5 2600, Geforce GTX 1060 6GB, Crucial 16 GB DDR4 kit, BeQuiet 500W 80 plus power supply, San Disk 256GB SATA SSD, Western Digital NVME SSD 500GB. To spare some money i got an older Enermax airflow Case for 5€ and went on with the stock Ryzen cooler. i love building cheap AM4 Systems because you still have the option to upgrade the CPU to a Ryzen 5000

Some oem green mobo flip tricks: Use red lighting when selling. The red makes the green look black. --- Use an rgb downdraft cooler. Shining light straight out the side makes it hard to see the cheapo mobo. --- Put in the smallest case it will fit so it's harder to see. --- If dealing with connector boot errors (oem bs) it's almost always that one pin needs to be tied to ground. --- Automotive tint can be used to darken most glass side panels. --- Many oem mobos with rgb headers have the color-order mixed up. But will still work since 5v/12v will be an end pin. Just use your rgb software to mix values as needed. --- Or, some cases that come with rgb fans use regular rgb (5v or 12v) controllers. Use that same controller for your cpu cooler.

If the motherboard doesn't have xmp, a good tip is to find out which ram speed it supports. Then go and find a proper ram kit with the proper jedec profile. I currently have a oem prebuilt that supports up to 3200 mhz, but only with a jedec profile (thats 3200 mhz cl22). If i put in a kit with a 3200 mhz cl16 xmp profile it only runs at 2400 mhz.

Getting CPU + GPU used (imo) is the way to go these days. Those two components can easily take up to 60-70% of your budget. So getting them used and everything else new is the best way to save money without having to worry too much about faulty parts. CPU & GPU have the smallest margin of error out of anything in a PC meaning they either work or don't work. There's almost no middle ground there. Sure, there's always a chance of faulty GPU fans or crusty thermal paste, but that's always been the risk of buying used. I used to think getting used RAM sticks is a good way to save money. But RAM prices have gone down a lot recently so paying a small extra is worth it imo for the lifetime warranty. And I think the most important part is the PSU. Even if you're on a budget, try to spend extra on the PSU. A good PSU can easily last for more than a decade and it's by far the most forward compatible part of your PC.

You can buy everything for cheaper in the used market. Especially CPU GPU RAM and Power Supplies are very good saving options. The others tend to be too expensive to ship (case) or are not that accessible on the market.

@@chadstudd1616 very true you dont get any warrenty with used parts and gpus are the worst components to buy used people clean them up then sell them because they look good at first glance but in alot of cases they fail the guys buying them and they end up losing alot of money because of risk gpus in general are the hardest working components of a build and without knowing the history of the component you might end up shooting yourself in the foot that is the reality of buying used i had first hand experience of buying a used gpu that ended up with me losing money

Great tutorial on how to re-case a used OEM PC and add a graphics card. I think some people will really need to hear the importance of having an appropriate power supply with appropriate wattage and cables to run the graphics card that's being added to the system.

Yeah I'm trying to transplant an Acer Aspire pre-built into a new case, and the proprietary board size which is extra long and the not-24-pin but 6 pin ATX for main power is a catch that may make flipping a pre-build a bit harder. One thing to remember with the ATX12VO style connector is that it probably won't turn off the CPU/GPU fans when you press power. I gotta try it and see. Great vid Bryan!😍

Yeah if you have that problem, just go into windows and unlock the power button settings and select turn everything off. However I have had some lenovos that just stay on when you go to turn it off.

A cool video. What i like to recommend for kids or people starting out is to just get an old workstation tower from the past few years for a few 100 quid and throw a low power modern GPU in it. Most things will play 1080 medium just fine . This method ofc gets you a better machine that looks cooler.

Grabbed a 3060ti for $200 barely used recently that runs great, a 7700k for like $100 and the rest of the stuff was like $250 for used parts like board, ram, storage, cooler, power supply, etc. Basically built a solid starting gaming computer for $550 and could’ve gone cheaper if I looked around even more but just bought what I saw was cheapest and best price at the moment.

Hey Bryan! Long time viewer. Not trying to be a smart a but the 24 pin connector can fit more than one way. I have seen some really stupid mistakes . Ive even made one or two myself but the point is always triple check the connector is lined up properly. And hopefully nobody has anything plugged in while doing this either. Awesome content ! These OEM motherboards may look unappealing but they are much better than any brand and last for endless years. Only thing bothering me on this specific board is there is connectivity for additional ram slots ready but they didn't build them, 4 slots would have been awesome, also it looks like there is an exposed chipset/bridge between the ram and battery, it needs a heatsink.

The 3060 Ti is a pretty capable card still. Even for 1080p gaming. Considering the 4060 Ti's 8GB bad value to VRAM ratio, this one's much more better buy.

I have a second hand Asus TuF 3060 Ti since 2022 september and its still working with no issues tho I did repaste it with MX 6 just to be sure and it runs everything I'm interested in playing.🙂 ' mainly single player games on a 2560x1080 ultrawide monitor'

I put a RTX 4060 low profile into a Lenovo Thinkcentre SFF with a i7-8700 and put 32gb of ram in it. I can run games and make them look as good as the ps5 on a 4k tv. The ps5 uses upscaling anyway so I can get games running and looking great even at 4k it's a great little system.

I love your content forever, Brian. But you do have to take into account that most of us can't get an i7-8700 OEM PC for $100. Australia has one of the fastest tech turn-over rates, and is an extremely buyer-friendly market for used parts because of this. I am still seeing i5-3470 OEMS at $100 in my market, and nothing 8th gen has even left the offices. On ebay, they are well over $200, at which point an R5-5600 is the better buy.

I would just have lifted the 8700 out of that PC and sold it with an i3 as a cheap office banger. And then used the 8700 with a proper board to build the gaming system. Getting a standard board into this case&PSU will just come with added trouble.

While it's true that as soon as you assemble your own PC you lose 100$ (actually probably more like 30% of the components cost) you also get a warranty of 2 years and negate the risk of getting hosed. So you do get something in return for the lost value of the components.

Don't sleep in those boring home office desktops. If you are patient you can pick up 8th and 9th gen i7 systems with 8-16 GB RAM and a small SSD for $100. Replace the CPU with a $20-30 i3, and then sell the system cleaned up for $100-150, you get a free i7, and maybe even some RAM

I want a decent pc for some yt vid editing, so software like openshot and audacity, handbrake. of course its 2024 and needs to sip power and be a used parts build. ddr3 is cheap so a 6 slot to cram in the ram, 4+ pcie so its can have expandability.... gpu with good 3d would be redundant but something that can do h264/265 in hw would be the dream

the only problem with used parts is that you are sol if something wrong happens. while on pre built at least you have one year of warranty

Why are you removing the CPU cooler first? It was not structural (attached to the case) and would have been a great handling point. This just adds another point of pain and mishandling. Start with the accessories like the GPU and wires. Use the cooler as a nice handle. You even did this during re-assembly. Why the AG400? Did you not suggest a terrible Top-Blower in your last video that was unable to keep temps at a reasonable level even without OC/PBO? When screwing down the CPU cooler, do not do it like this. Do it evenly. You probably squished the gunk to one side the way you did it. There was a clear incline to be seen when the on screen left screw was tightened. Do it by hand when the new tech stuff is too fast to react. This will cause issues with temperature and possible cause a bunch of hotter cores that are not covered by your thermal paste application. Using cheap SSD from a store that isn't easy to get a refund on is even more risky that the SSD itself. Like those fikwot drives. They drop pretty fast. Or whatever you chose. Do you have statistics on that Brian? Do your customers come back for warranty repairs when you placed stuff like that in their PCs? 2 Friends wanted a cheapo SSD. Guess who lost data? Came back like "wot mate? the fik happened here?" You should mention to check the distance thingy position to have them where they need to be and not cause short circuits

This is a great video for intel fanboys who don't have much money. But this CPU performs about the same as a R5 2600 and I am pretty sure it would be cheaper to just buy a used Ryzen and a B450 MB. I am shocked that a workstation this recent uses a standard 24 pin ATX connector. I don't think you'd have that on a Dell or HP. I do think that everyone should start by building a budget PC if they are new to PCs.

The Ferrari analogy is pushing it too far. What you have here is a dead-end system with no realistic upgrade path, restricted functionality but full of bling.
