@JustMe-gx4xt Жыл бұрын
Which model number temp controller did you use?
@davidzellers35376 жыл бұрын
I do HVAC and Refrigeration. All you had to do was remove the thermostat from your window unit and install a external thermostat. You can find the 110v or line voltage thermostat on the internet for about $20. All you do is run the two wires from old tstat to the new tstat and then set tstat to desired temp. No need for heating tstat bulb. If you can find a older window unit that had r-22 Refrigerant in it you will be better off. The new ones with r-410a won’t get as cold. But you did a good job. By the way It does not over work the compressor. It will still draw the same amps no matter the temp. Also you are looking for medium temp 40-44 degrees will be fine. Get you a strip of rubber to make a sweep and install on bottom of door on both sides it will help with air leakage.

David Zellers I have the same question as larry on this one. I would like to build a 8'x8'x6' walk in. What size AC would you recommend?
@davidzellers35376 жыл бұрын
Joshua Imoe A lot of that depends on what your climate is where you leave, try to use a 15k btu or whatever you can get. If it is smaller than a 15k Btu it would work but will take longer to cool. But once it gets down to temp it will not run as much. Insulate, insulate, insulate! Also make sure all is sealed off. You don’t have to insulate the interior with the same stuff used in video. You can use foam board. You can spray foam in the walls instead of using roll insulation. Get a unit that does not use a digital display. All you want is the old style that has knobs! Also run on low or med speed. If you lower the speed of the fan the discharge air will be colder due to slower air speed will be in contact with your evap coil longer. If you lower the speed you lower discharge temp. Samething in pressure, if u lower pressure you lower temperature.

Found an old cooler door on Craig's List. 4 eye bolts in the ceiling to hang halves/quarters. Small chain ratchet hoist (Harbor Freight) to lift up off a Rubbermaid cart we roll the carcass in on up to the eye bolt. Hog half can go 125lbs, beef quarter can go up to 200lbs, so you need to figure out HOW you're gonna handle them.

Thanks for putting this build on video. Seems like you accomplished this in the most efficient and low cost way possible.I'm going to copy your build. Much appreciated. I live in Montana and feed my family year round on game meat. Wanting to hang it for a good two weeks to get the absolute finest flavors possible poses a problem. During the Glorious Season (hunting) there are times when the outdoor temp. will dip well below freezing then bounce back up. For example this past October it went to 10 below for a week straight then jumped back to 55+ for a week. To keep the meat at that 34-38 golden aging temperature I'd need to add a small heating unit. I can't seem to find one with a thermostat that will turn the unit on at 30 and off at 34. Any thoughts?

how is the foil faced insulation holding up to cleaning over time ? would you still use that again vs metal paneling of some type ?
@NickW.H.2 жыл бұрын
I would prefer a solid wall but it’s holding up great, only issues are if something falls against it it will dent or get a small hole. I really don’t have to clean it. All the meat that goes in there gets hung on the rail so nothing touches the walls. Only thing I clean is the mat that lays on the floor. I just pull it out and hose and brush it off. I do sweet out the floor from time to time.

One recommendation. You are going through all this to keep it cool and age the meat out a little. I would recommend a separate temperature sensor with an alerting mechanism of some sort. My company uses them in our server room to monitor temperatures. We get email alerts when the temp passes a threshold. Just FYI the Blink Camera from Amazon has one built in and connects via WiFi. I have used them in our smaller remote offices and you get the added benefit of a camera.

@NickW.H.6 жыл бұрын
Derek Mikeal Not true, Ive used this cooler up to weeks at a time in mid 80 degree weather. The walls have foam with foil which cleans real easy and I use a plastic liner on the floor that I can remove to clean. Consistent in and out won’t work, the a/c can’t keep up with that.

@NickW.H.5 жыл бұрын
I have a plastic mat I put on the floor. When I’m done I pull it out and hose it off. Mind you I only put skinned quarters in there and I don’t get very much blood dripping off.

What about humidity levels? Doesn't using the AC unit drop humidity levels? Can that be overcome? The cooling part is great, but low humidity will dry out your game and waste good meat. My understanding is you want to keep humidity above 60% and below 90%.

Looks good, but arent those foam panels pretty wimpy? I think the R value is something like a 4. Maybe another layer of that stuff could make it more efficient?
@NickW.H.6 жыл бұрын
The walls selling and floor are insulated. The foam is just another layering the outside.
@dscrive6 жыл бұрын
Just to add my two cents, the foam panels are actually a really good idea, it looks to me like they are installed properly and will help prevent outside air from infiltrating into the cooler. also, shiny surfaces, like the foil facing, don't radiate heat very well and should help reduce what heat is getting through the insulation from radiating into the cooler. I don't think the shiny surface will help with convective heat though. Oh, and a third good thing, the layer of foam board creates what is called continuous insulation without it his wall cavities would be R13 with gaps of about R3.5 where the studs are. (2x4's have an R value of roughly 1 per inch)
@bucmeister77135 жыл бұрын
The unit running is what pulls the moisture out as well as cooling the temp. If the room is to efficient here in MS then the moisture levels stay high which is not good. Much like AC for home, to big a unit gives short run times with resultant higher indoor humidity and lower comfort levels. Very humid environment here abouts.
@tclodfelter87893 жыл бұрын
Looks gooder to me! LOL! I think between spray foaming your seams and corners of your frame work and using the metal foil tape everywhere...that SHOULD reduce the condensation QUITE a bit! How's it working so far?
@NickW.H.3 жыл бұрын
I make this video in 2016, the cooler runs the same as it did day 1. I’ve never had any issues with condensation other than the one time I slept in it testing out a sleeping bag (there is a video of it here on my channel). Having a live human in there caused the a/c to freeze up. Once I was in my sleeping bag it worked properly.

The problem with this application is if the atmosphere temperature drops below 55 deg.f you won’t be able to maintain the temperature in the cool box! If I were you I’ll install a fan cycle switch to turn off the condenser fan when the compressor head pressure drops below 180 psi.
@NickW.H.4 жыл бұрын
I am ok with it fluctuating between say 34 and 38 degrees. With the volume of meat hanging in the cooler it maintains quite well. My biggest thing is I don’t want it above 40 degrees. If the meat gets a little slushy I’m ok with that. Thanks for watching!

rheal leblanc thank you! Yes you can use other A/C’s Im not exactly sure but I don’t think mine is an LG. The main thing is you want one with a digital thermostat that you can adjust the temp to the lowest temp. Mine goes down to 64. I’ve had two mule deer and an elk hanging in mine all at the same time so it holds quite a bit, I’d say it was around 500 pounds.

I am having a problem finding the foil backed insulation like what you have. I have found some at Lowes that is backed for the outside of the house, but has writing all over it. Where did you find your insulation? Locally? Or did you order it? I found some that is R-1.93 rated. I just like the appearance of your foil. It is clean. I have the room already formed. I have a concrete floor so think I am good there. I live in the Atlanta area. I am not going to use mine for meat, but for urban farming.

Great video, man. Starting mine this week. Did you really only use one layer of 1/2” foil-faced insulation? My space is small and I don’t feel like I really need R25.
@NickW.H.3 жыл бұрын
No, I used regular wall insulation in the walls and celling. The 1/2” foam is just on the inside walls. If your room is small enough and your A/C is big enough you probably don’t need as much insulation. With meat hanging it holds cold temps really easy but empty the a/c has to work a little harder.
