I use Denim blue, and Crimson red. Sometimes I use white stain also, and sometimes I don't, I just leave it burnt. All are different and some come out better than others. Also I will usually clear coat with gloss or semi gloss.

Wow, the chisel came out super nice. I saw John Builds Its razor trick... might try screwing the backers on instead of brad nails. Good stuff.
@bensworkshop41953 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I prefer to use screws because they are stronger and i believe brad nails pull out a bit to easily. Make sure to pre drill!

So honest question, what razors do you use, cause the ones I use crack and break when I hammer them in and I’m using a rubber mallet. Also can you do a video of you doing the stars, your way is super cool. Thank you

Did you use solid stain or semi-transparent? Have you used spray paint for the stars?
@ChristianCMC2 жыл бұрын
I sand my flags smooth before I stain, but after staining they are usually pretty rough. Do you ever sand lightly after staining? I've done 2, working on number 3 and they feel like I never sanded them after I finish staining. Any suggestions would help. Great video and the flag is awesome looking.

When do this flag did you have any issues with the board Twisting, Cupping, Bowing, etc.? Thanks
@bensworkshop41953 жыл бұрын
I did not have any issues with the dozens of flags I’ve made. Since I glue the backers and screw every stripe in place x4 they hold up very well. Thanks!

What stains did you use for your blue and red. Great video!
@bensworkshop41954 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I used Crimson Blue stain, all HD’s should have them. The red stain I had them make me a custom heavier stain. Most pre made red stains will work just make sure to wipe off all excess or else it will clump up.
@thomasdaubert11144 жыл бұрын
@@bensworkshop4195 i was gonna say, I didn't see you wipe the stain off. I can only do a few strips at a time, or it dries. You did them all at once. I also use white stain every so often.
@bensworkshop41954 жыл бұрын
Thomas Daubert I’ve never used white stain before on the flags but I’m sure they come out great!

Great job! Out of curiosity how long did it take to carve out the fifty stars?
@bensworkshop41954 жыл бұрын
Thank you! After doing it a handful of times I was able to carve all 50 stars in about 2 hours. My very first time was more like 4-5 hours of carving haha.
@TedH71 Жыл бұрын
Probably would be faster if he used a Dremel to carve them out.

Where did you buy the star stencil?

did u glue the 13 stripes together?
@bensworkshop41954 жыл бұрын
I did not glue them no. This is due to the possibility of glue leaking through to the face after the stripes have already been stained. Considering these flags do not have much pressure put on them and typically are just hung on walls, four screws in each stripe does the job well in my opinion. I also like that the backers push the flag out from the wall a bit and give it almost a “floating” look.

Does anyone know the dimensions of the star stencil??
@bensworkshop41952 жыл бұрын
Yes, it should be the one that is approximately 15” X 10 1/2”. That’ll be the one I used in this video
@ragejenkins82374 жыл бұрын
How thick are the backers because I thought they were 1” but the screws are only 1” so I’m confused
@ragejenkins82374 жыл бұрын
And can you post link to the stains you used
@bensworkshop41954 жыл бұрын
The backers are only 3/4” in thickness but they can be anywhere between 1”-2” for the width. If you use Home Depot lumber like I did here you can use the finish pine they have at 3/4” and just barley counter sink 1” drywall screws from the backers into the flag

Did I miss the part about how the stars got to be white?
@bensworkshop41954 жыл бұрын
Stars are not white on my flags, just carved out with a chisel and left with the natural wood color
@elmoblatch97874 жыл бұрын
Well done. However, you're asking to get your fingers burned. Just prop up the board or set it on a block of concrete. Don't hold it while burning. No dremel for this guy. Nope. He uses a chisel. Stone cold legit, but man that takes dexterity.
