What a brilliant video. bit scary in some parts but now at least I know, battery cost is the biggest cost on a board and it's well deserved when done like this.

Great video! One question. I thought that people didn’t recommend using hot glue to hold cells together because it cracks and becomes brittle after time. Is this a different kind of hot glue that doesn’t do that?
@PatrickECleary
@PatrickECleary 11 ай бұрын
+1 What kind of glue is that? Looks different from regular hot-melt.

Certain people have argued about this for a long time but in my experience good hot glue lasts perfectly fine. I have cells I glued in 2017 that are still holding together today. Some people argue for silicone, but others argue that since silicone is so soft, it lets the cells rub more than hot glue. Hot glue is easy, fast, and holds well. It is my opinion that it is the best for now. Silicone is a huge pain, takes a long time to dry, and gets absolutely everywhere. No judgement to people that would like to use it though, it works as well. As a side note, all of the groups are further wrapped in fishpaper, and then taped off tightly with fiber tape. After that, they're welded together. I would be surprised if any of the cells ever manage to move at all.

It's just a brand of black hot glue that I've been using for a while. It's a high-heat kind of hot glue, and not all hotglue is created equal. Check out the ProjectFarm video for his opinoins, I've used Gorilla hotglue and this black stuff from Trendbox.
@RBEMotion

While that is a good option, I do not really use that to glue P groups together.

Last step would be wrapping the groups in foam to reduce rubbing and vibrations.
@RBEMotion
@RBEMotion 10 ай бұрын
Yeah foam gets packed in the sides on this particular pack, as well as the thin layer beneath it in the enlosure.

25:17 maybe use some parts of silicone heat resistant mats?
@RBEMotion
@RBEMotion 11 ай бұрын
That's a pretty good idea, if they were thin enough that would work really well. Despite how thin the fr4 is, it still kind of made the nickel stick up a bit which makes the joint a little tighter than I'd like, so thickness is important.

Dude it’s crazy I have the same build! But I’m between 18s6p or 16s7p with these cells.´ for you the range is would be better to not start my 2nd pack in 16s ? Never did 18 before and I’m a bit worried about the capacity lost : 16s 32ah 18s 27ah 😅
@RBEMotion
@RBEMotion 4 ай бұрын
If you don't need the extra speed just go with 16s, which esc are you going to use?

Well, technically, it depends on if you want to run your discharge path through your bms or not. I run all of my BMS setups with the discharge bypassed, because I always want to have brakes, and don't ever want the possibility of having a cutout from overvolting or over drawing. If you bypass discharge it doesn't matter at all. If you run the discharge through the bms, it may not be quite enough

I love your content and builds you remind me a lot of Le Drib who flies FPV. Can someone recommend me a place to buy the braid I can’t find any. I have 120x 21700s for the pack but I still need some materials.

Thanks for the compliments! Braid can be tough to find, but there is some available on amazon if you look for desoldering wire or copper braid, something like that. You can also find it on aliexpress. "Tinned copper braid"

Quick question - How do you determine what fuse size I should have for a battery pack? When I built my DIY I did not put one in but I'm noticing a trend with more and more people putting these in. What prompted folks to add these? Thanks mang !
@RBEMotion
@RBEMotion 11 ай бұрын
Well off the bat, it's not a battery pack fuse. It's a charge port fuse, to protect the bms if the charge port were to be shorted or plugged in backwards. Usually I spec the fused based on how fast the bms can charge, which for LLT bms is usually 15a. So I'll put in a 20a or 25a fuse in there to help protect it. It's somewhat debated as to its necessity since most BMS are good at protecting themselves. However, I've replaced a melted charge port before so I still see value in it.

could you get rid of all the soldering braided ribbon if you you folded over the nickel tabs toward each other so they overlap? then you can use the spot welder like on the ends of the cells. or would that not be durable enough to vibration?
@RBEMotion
@RBEMotion 10 ай бұрын
You COULD, but it would no longer be a flex-tolerant pack. Also, welding nickel together like that is not super durable in the first place. If you were to use a PCB like Lacroix you could weld the nickel to that, but that's not exactly very accessible.

What gauge wires for discharge and where to buy?

I used 10awg high strand silicone wire for the discharge cables, you can get them on Amazon or Aliexpress. I like to use BENTECHGO on Amazon.

I used 12 awg for that, which is admittedly slightly overkill, but I planned to charge with up to 20a at times, so it wasn't a big deal to oversize.
