Hey pretty neat idea! Although you might consider adding a 90 degree elbow on the bottom of your bell siphon and a short length of 1/2 inch pvc. It will slow the water enough to create the siphon but will break easier when your water level drops.

Thank you, I've been looking for a video such as your's that explains step by step how to set up a small aquaponics system for weeks now....thank's to your video I decided to go ahead and give it a try. Mainly because I already have a 29 gallon aquarium with 3 fancy goldfish and have a H.O.B filter as well as a 110 gallon canister filter on it but no matter how much filtration I have it seems my aquarium always seems to be cloudy and I've been killing my back every week or week and a 1/2 doing a 50% water change or 25% change one every 4 to 5 days! As well as cleaning my hob filter every 2 weeks and canister filter once a month....Hoping the addition of the aquaponics system to my aquarium it will help to keep it cleaner!

Rhonda Callejas Fancy goldfish are messy and will soil the water in that small of a tank quickly! Not sure what kind of "cloudy" it is, but it may be a free floating algae bloom if there is too much light and/or excess food/waste. Try to only light tank for 6-8 hrs a day and make sure it doesn't get direct sunlight from a window.

i think that would be a great system built on a much bigger scale to grow vegetables in the house in the winter, but it probably wouldn't be cost effective unless a good amount of natural sunlight was used.

What kind of plastic is the container made of? I've heard of people having to elbow the output to get it to work better.

That's a neat little setup you got there! It's a lot of fun trying different plants, cuttings and seeds in the aquaponic systems. I find that with the younger systems, less than 1 year running, herbs and leafy greens seem to do best, your lettuce sure looks happy to be there. Nice tank you've got that sitting on, how many gallons does that hold? Best of luck in your aquaponic garden adventure, blessings!

Thanks for commenting! I think it is about a 30 gallon tank that I picked up at a local thrift store for 20 dollars a few years ago. It came with stuff like air pump, filter, and light too so that was a great deal for an acrylic tank. Blessings to you this year too!

Yes, I have been munching on the lettuce. The leaves are very tender and juicy. I wouldn't mind making a 4 X 4 planting bed for this tank...would have to clean out the garage a bit though!

David D Lol, I always try to warn people that it's addictive! Fun, health & good for you but highly addictive all the same ... I find kale does amazingly well in aquaponics, you might want to give it a try. Happy New Year!

+Javi Gauthier Yes, that pump can be found at a pet store, or a Lowes or Home depot would have pumps in the outdoor fountain, pond section.

Hi, please help me. If my aquarium uses a bell siphon technique, how can I keep my aquarium water level the same without fluctuations? Would I need another tank? if so how would my set up look like?

don't use a bell siphon in the aquarium. Use a flow in and flow out system with a hole and drain to your sump. the hole draining the aquarium should be where you want your water level to remain constant.

The syphon seems quite nifty, though I'm wondering if it's really needed. Just a a down pipe through one side of the box, while the intake is at the other, would seem to be enough for a clean water flow through the box. I suspect the plants would grow better if the roots were not getting flooded all the time.

I haven't been doing more either this recently but I believe the idea is that the roots shouldn't be submerged in the water continuously. The siphon allows them to have some time not under water. @@backyardmetalcasting Yes. It's perplexing how it works. Most plants don't like to be continually wet because of root rot. I suppose certain plants, like mint, would be OK with it.

Mountain Bike Mayhem which pipe? The riser is 1/2 inch...outlet is 1/2 inch...the bell housing is 1 1/2 inch and 4 inch for the strainer. I'm pretty sure on that...I will check to make sure tomorrow.

if your siphon continues to flow once the siphon starts, that means your water flow into the tank is too high and needs to be turned down a bit

I plan to do this in combination with my turtle's dry dock area. I would like to let him have free access to food for himself and to cut down on the ammonia his messy self causes.

Points for developing your own syphon. They're quite pricey premade. The system seems quite noisy, which would be a concern in my apartment if I were watching TV etc. I wonder if you had the emptying pipe below the fishtank water line whether it would cut the noise.

You keep talking about a siphon, but it seems that you could just use gravity to let the water drain into the tank. What are the advantages of using the bell siphon?

showman139 you would not need a pump for recirculation if you put it higher than the fish tank somewhere else so that the syphon would work. However, the further away from the tank you are the more pipe or tubing you would have to use. And the more pipe or tubing used the more chance for leaks.

Because it was in the garage in the middle of winter so the plants needed to be a little warmer.

The water level is to high, the roots get oxygen for the air, if they are totally submerged they won't grow fast . If you added a bubbler to the tank water that would provide better oxygen also.

Make an update video like many people do to prove that your stuff is working ! The fishes lies the small slow current and also the oxygen that your set up is lacking ! I seen heater in that tank and as your should have known the gold fish are cold water fishes and they do good or the best between 10-20 water temp ! Higher temp and those fishes need more dissolved oxygen in the water ! That is why they go for the more oxygen rich water ! duh ! lol PS: Make and update video how you made a light fixture and how big you aquaponic garden got !

+Gabor P . To answer your questions: I had a heater in there because i didn't want my water to freeze in my unheated garage. The water had plenty of oxygen. I ate the plants from the system but didn't replant it because we have gotten to be concerned about raising food in plastic...I do have other videos of my small outside garden on this channel.

Organic Gardening in North Carolina OK cool ! I wish you made like a progress video like a back up or to show why aquaponic is good and what you can harvest ! I know people would say too much effort but just as much as like a kitchen garden like a 3M x 6M ! Though what I would like to point out is that in the warm water fishes goes more toward the surface do to lack of oxygen and they body needs more and use more in warm water ! In colder water the oxygen fuses slower so it doesn't evaporate as fast and leaves more oxygen in the eater for fishes ! Especially to the cold water fishes cause as you know like the koi's and the goldfishes constantly moving ! The warm water fishes too but the cold water a little more ! In the winter under the ice they slow down considerably and do not eat as much or move as much but I never said in freezing water I simply said between 10-20 degree temp water ! PS: Warmer water you need more water movement cold water need a lot less movement ! But that is for the dissolved oxygen in the water !

DMAN D in my design, when the water level drops to the borrom of the pipe, the holes in the bottom let air in and the water stops flowing. Then, the water rises until it reaches the top again. The pump never stops
