Awesome, I saw one mistake though. You forgot to use primer before you glued the pvc. They do make a 2 in 1 now, but the glue won't stick without the primer. The primer must also be wet when applying the glue. I would also make sure the glue and primer you use is safe for potable water. Most are made for non potable water. Which means there's a possibility it can leech chemicals.

I'm a bit scared to have an outside system, and drilling a pot would be a bit tricky for me. Could you do this where the planter is hooked onto the inside of your tank, and an external box filter is pouring water onto the planter? I guess you'd just have to make sure the water level is just right.
@paulcox43695 жыл бұрын
Hi Richelle, a wonderful cross hobby video. I am a huge fan of aquaponic beds & have one on my 600g tank, it's at the side of the tank & is mainly stocked with pothos which to me seems to be the only plant that sucks up the nitrates in measurable amounts. Am getting very excited about a tank l am building that will have a bigger bed in a position of good natural light, so is my girlfriend who is mad on orchids. Apparently they love the humidity & could be mounted on wood coming out of the bed with their roots not in but slightly above the water, l know nothing about orchids, other than they inspired huge passion & look wonderful so they will find a place!
@QuebecCichlides5 жыл бұрын
Your tank must be fabulous! 🤩 Good to know about the Pothos. I though people just used them because they were unkillable. For orchids, my boyfriend is an orchid geek and when I suggested putting one in the planter, I almost ended up sleeping on the couch 😂 I saw some KZbinrs try it and have it work but the problem with these videos is that you never see the long term. There are so many types of orchids, maybe one is better suited for such a project.
@paulcox43695 жыл бұрын
@@QuebecCichlides That made me smile, l try to take in some of the constant flow of information l get about orchids, but really l know very little. Other than if their roots sit in water they died but they like high humidity, so l thought a nice peice of bog wood coming out of the water with an orchid attached but clear of the water surface.

I love this video! I'm just confused on where the pump goes? I feel so dumb asking but I would love so much to do this. Thanks!
@QuebecCichlides4 жыл бұрын
Hi kinderly, don't worry about it. The pump is under the planter. It pumps the water up to the little "fountain" (the white elbow where the water comes out). That's how you get the water in the planter
@TheLattelizard4 жыл бұрын
Probably a ridiculous question, the pump for the hydroponics that pulls the water to the planter goes inside the tank? Looks like I drop it in and the electrical runs from the pump (in water) out of the aquarium to the electrical source. amiright?

no offence, this is not a good design. Ive designed commercial aquaponic systems for 10 years. should be using a bell siphon to clear the water from the grow bed every 15 minutes, you will have to adjust the flow till you achieve this. next good mechanical filtration should be used prior to it entering the grow bed. If you dont then you cant control the constantly building waste bioload. the plants wont keep up with it and your nitrates will eventually spike and you cant clean the bed without killing all the plant and alot of the bacteria. your design would work better as a raft system and you can hand siphon out the waste that collects on the bottom.
@QuebecCichlides5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your opinion. As I mentioned in my video, this is not a pro-grade aquaponics system. it's just a little fun planter to add on your tanks and a little artisan project to spruce up your weekends. I also mentioned that you would need to add a professional filter, because this doesn't compensate for this in any ways. It also doesn't replace regular maintenance...as I said in the video.... I didn't do a bell siphon because, contrary to pro-aquaponics systems, aquariums are filled to the brink, meaning that, if there's a power outage, all the water would siphon completely back into the tank, spilling water all over the floor. I guess to avoid gunk from the tank getting into the planter, I could add a sponge on the pump.
@Fullautofreedom5 жыл бұрын
@@QuebecCichlides Thanks for the reply. I feel you did a great job just a few subtle changes and it would be perfect. I should have worded my comment better to not seem negative. And you are correct, you would either have to lower the tank water level or feed the bell siphon into a sump. you could still do a raft system though without problems with your exact same design. In fact it would be perfect. I highly recommend putting a good mechanical filter (sponge filter on the pump in your case) before it enters a system like that. Or have your filtered return water flow through the bed before returning to the tank. you will be shocked how fast it will fill up with waste. Ive seen it first hand too many times. I know you said you still needed a main filter and thats true. but it would be a big mistake to have unfiltered water enter that grow bed. both with media or a raft system. way less of a problem with a raft system because of how easily you can clean it. Keep doing your thing. Love your positive nature and passion.
