Justin Bender can you do a USA market and do Apple company please
@skube8 жыл бұрын
I really appreciate how you explain precisely and fully each time. These are more useful than any tutorial supplied by the banks themselves. I find it fascinating to compare the process and design between each. It's interesting that not all dashboards show the percentage of portfolio that each fund uses. Thanks for muting the distracting music track too!
@JustinBenderCPM8 жыл бұрын
@skube: I'm glad you like the set-up of the videos. I always find that certain nuances are lost if you don't explain the entire process from start to finish.I'll definitely keep the background music to a minimum for future videos ;)

How can you view the types of stocks you can buy? Can you buy Amazon, Google, Apple, etc?

Yes you can. When you google the company it gives you the ticker symbol. Then give the ticker here. Will provide current bid/ask prices same as it shows.

Hey justin thank you for all the good content. At what amount in $ would you recommand buying individual stocks and rebalancing instead of buying veqt or vt?
@JustinBenderCPM4 жыл бұрын
@Bruce Dao - you're very welcome! Until your personal portfolio is worth around a billion dollars, I wouldn't recommend buying individual stocks and rebalancing instead of buying broadly-diversified ETFs (so ... never ;)
@brucedao23604 жыл бұрын
@@JustinBenderCPM Sorry that wasn't the question. I meant balancing myself individual ETF'S vs paying higher MER all-in one etf's like VEQT and VT.
@JustinBenderCPM4 жыл бұрын
@@brucedao2360 - My apologies for the misunderstanding. Most investors should probably stick to the all-in one ETFs, but there could certain circumstances where it makes sense to buy individual ETFs. Here's an article I wrote on the topic that should help you decide: www.canadianportfoliomanagerblog.com/when-should-i-dump-veqt-or-should-i/

I am just learning about DIY investing and ETFs since I started subscribing to money sense. It all seems a little overwhelming. Is there a service out there that is somewhere between the high priced financial advisors and the complete DIY stream?
@JustinBenderCPM8 жыл бұрын
@Noah Alexander: I started a fee-only "DIY Investor Service" a number of years ago, but I had to phase it out due to the time involved. If your portfolio is modest in size (and mainly just RRSPs and TFSAs), it's likely best to educate yourself to become a better DIY investor. If your account is larger, you should be able to find a reasonably-priced, competent advisor to help you.

Excellent video. If I may ask a somehow related question... In your Canadian Couch Potato model portfolios you recommend ETFs "when a portfolio is at least $50,000 or so". Why should someone with just over $15,000 not start a portfolio of Vanguard ETF index funds at RBC Direct Investing, say under a TFSA?
@JustinBenderCPM8 жыл бұрын
@chogno98: I don't see anything wrong with setting up an ETF portfolio at RBC Direct Investing for about $15,000 - you just have to keep trading costs to a minimum (I would probably build a 3 ETF portfolio instead of a 5 ETF portfolio, and only invest my cash annually). As a note, the $50,000 comment you mentioned is from my colleague, the Canadian Couch Potato (a.k.a. Dan Bortolotti).

Hi Justin, great thanks for your videos and info you have made available to people like me (who have no idea how to invest on their own)! Quick question, is it possible to purchase ETF with locked in retirement funds? If so, where do I find info on this?

@Tyler G: ETFs can be purchased in a locked-in retirement account (LIRA) at your discount brokerage - the process of placing the trades is identical to the one I show in my videos.

@JungleEddie - You could consider switching to a brokerage that doesn't charge trading commissions on ETF purchases (such as Questrade or National Bank Direct Brokerage).

Hi Justin! Thanks so much for this video...I just set up my first portfolio and it didn't take long. However, I ended up with about $15.00 left to invest (a debit I guess). Can I just leave it there until the next time I invest a lump sum? Thanks again:)

You really should select an all or none fill - if the ask is going up you may get a partial fill. You can not then change your limit price upward without paying an additional trading fee.

@JamesJoyce12: You can't place "All of None" trades for Canadian-listed ETFs. If you use a limit order and receive a partial fill, you can adjust the limit price upward without paying an additional trading fee.

If you modify a partially filled open order in any fashion then it becomes a new order and attracts a second commission. If you get a fill of open order across two days then it will attract two commissions as well.

@JamesJoyce12: Modifying a partially filled order on the same trade day will not attract a second commission. If a partially filled order is completely filled on the second day, you would be charged two commissions.
