I agree Chadd, there are not enough ground FPV vids. This is very helpful, especially learning realistic range capabilities of the different frequency setups. You made one of the more informative ground FPV vids and I've been scanning KZbin for 6 months. I got into RC because I wanted to drive around the neighborhood. Little did I know that it would be so tough just to get around the block, which I have yet to accomplish. It seems like I have to drop $1k to get beyond 100 yards of range.
@ChaddRainsFPV3 жыл бұрын
Hey Samey, If you have some 5.8ghz gear, it can help you transition into 1.3ghz. Don’t get me wrong, DJI is the way I would choose if I was starting from zero. But if you can’t swing the ~$1k, consider 1.3. I’m making a video on it now and using my goggles and 5.8 gear I already had made my 1.3ghz setup cost around $350 or so. Even less if you have a very powerful 2.4ghz ground radio that gives you the RC range you need. I hope you keep at it, whichever route you choose!

Absolutely! I actually used to teach kids with health issues to fly FPV drones. I ran a deal called QuadsForKids. Regulations ended that back in 2016 or so but RC cars can make this happen again. This probably won’t get a response, but worth a shot. I noticed in the description that it says you need to add a connector to power the air unit, and 2 feet of wire. This is what I don’t know how to do and would like some help. In the meantime I’ll keep researching, so far I’ve found nothing on that specific detail. Thanks for all the great videos!
@ChaddRainsFPV Жыл бұрын
Aye I try to help everyone that comments on my channel lol. So, the air unit has like 6 wires, but only 2 need to be used: the negative and positive. Solder on a battery connector to those wires (most would use XT60 because it’s common, but a red JST connector is totally fine). Be sure your fan is also going to get power too (so put a connector on that or splice it into the air unit’s power cable- depends on the voltage if the fan and battery you’re using). Next, you’ll either want to get a small battery to power the system (a little 3S is best) or power it off of your car’s battery. No more than 4s and you should always add a 25v 1000uf capacitor to your air unit’s battery lead if you’re using your car’s battery. You can see how FPV drones add capacitors to battery leads in you need inspiration. Good luck brother 🤙
@danielthornton1633 Жыл бұрын
@@ChaddRainsFPV awesome man, thanks. Just to make sure I’m following you, if I get a 3s battery with a female xt60, and solder a male xt60 to the air unit power cable, then it’s just plug and go (and of course the fan as well) just want to be clear on that part. I’ve never needed to solder anything, but it’s definitely something I want to invest in for future projects. My kids love all this stuff lol I’ve built a lot of r/c cars over the years but never set one up for FPV. Definitely caught my attention quick!
@ChaddRainsFPV Жыл бұрын
@@danielthornton1633 Yup! It’s that easy. Just twist the 12v fan wires in with the AU power wires and solder them into the xt60 and you’ll be set to power it from a 3S battery. You’ll have to turn temperature protection off on the AU (setting in the goggles) in order to get good range. It defaults to 25mw otherwise, but because you have a fan you should be just fine. Go make something awesome 🙌

It's great that you had the idea to offer a video on how to build an FPV RC car, I thank you for the effort, and I really hate to be critical -- but speaking as a completely inexperienced beginner, it was just frustrating. I was so proud that I built my own 4WD, 2-speed crawler with locking hubs all by myself -- I just want to drive it FPV around my backyard. But building the crawler was easy, it was a kit and just had to follow the directions. That was nothing compared to this electronic stuff with no instruction manual, no idea what pieces are compatible with each other, how to connect them, how to power them or how to get the video feed. Sadly, your video didn't answer those questions. I understand I need a camera and a set of goggles, plus I need an "800mw VTX." I think that's a transmitter but instead the link you provided seems to be for a 200mw transmitter. How do you know what pieces are compatible with each other? How do you connect them? And how do you power this stuff? Separate battery (what size?) or how to connect to RC car battery? It's "super easy" for YOU because you're smart and experienced, but I'm not and a few seconds looking at your car at 1:45 didn't make it look "super easy" at all. And you might as well have been speaking Greek in the rest of the video. I am hoping you will consider making another video and just go over the 5.8 system very slowly in great detail and assume that your viewers know absolutely nothing. THAT will make it "super easy."

Aye this is a fair critique and I appreciate you being so detailed in your comment. That being said, this is a hobby and every single part of it will take more than 1 KZbin video to learn. I made the best video I could, for free, and I know it will require more goggling and more videos, but that’s going to be the case regardless. In this video it looks like I run 1 system that has the controller and goggles and car linked, but I do not. The goggles are separate from the controller, but I do run an upgraded control system (but it isn’t linked to the goggles). I'd love to know where these people get these elaborate setups with camera on multi axis servos they can swivel around etc.. Reliable fixed camera on a haul-ass RC makes sense out in public because you need to be able to evade, but I also like the idea of trying to manage rough terrain or small spaces at slow speeds and being able to manipulate any desired viewing angle to see better. Or maybe just really wide angle cameras accomplish this already, IDK. Whenever I just bootleg mount a camera on an RC it just doesn't look right and it's hard to actually gauge obstacles.
@ChaddRainsFPV Жыл бұрын
Getting the camera as high as possible (without sacrificing durability) is key. It helps you see bumped in the road before it’s too late and really ‘ups’ your special awareness. I’ll be running the O3 camera in my latest build so the fov is insanely wide already. But doing the gimbal and pan servo is a big custom job. May try to make that happen in the future but there really isn’t anything ‘good’ that’s off the shelf atm 🤙
@Magneticitist Жыл бұрын
@@ChaddRainsFPV OK that makes sense, thanks! Custom cam job seems nice but I guess a real nice wide fov would do fine. I suppose anything is better than me taping a small camera drone on top of my RC car for the camera lol.

@@ChaddRainsFPV I did a little digging and found a real easy way to do a 2-axis camera deal. I'm using the Radiolink 5 channel (soon to be 7 channel). It comes with a 6 channel receiver where the 6th can just easily be a fan that will always be on. After steering and throttle you have the 3 extra channels to play with. I used one for a light and the other 2 are the camera servos. I got a cheap 2-axis mount off amazon, all plastic and uses the little plastic gear micro servos but works well. They also allow full 360 rotation. Since it comes with the servos it's real easy to just plug in, then just program the Radiolink how you want. I used the little VR pot they have on there to swivel the cam left and right.. but the downside is unless you have view of the front of the car you have to use the controller screen display to show you the 0 point. I just have another button I hold down to make the camera tilt upward a little so I can see higher. With one of those little adjustment boards to play with the full servo rotation I'm going to make it so I can spin around and look behind me also.

What about opensource OpenHD system? On car: flight controller Pixhawk4 + Raspberry Pi + Wifi adapter. Driver: Raspberry + diversity Wifi, usb controller. Good maple antennas. I have seen some people talking about this system lately and I hope it gains traction!! I know that integrating a “flight controller” for a rover can make for some cool features, like waypoint missions, but it disables the brakes as far as I can tell. Yo! So my ground station is pretty but I can’t use 1.3ghz in my area (hence why I haven’t released the relay video). I just have my main video output from my receivers (or receiver) going to the ‘camera input’ wire of a 5.8ghz vtx. From there I just make sure the vtx stays cool and I tune in with my fatsharks. At this time there is no good way to do DJI with a relay 🤙

You haven't done the 1.3ghz video, did you? Couldn't find it on your channel :/ Could you give some hints to look into to build the 1.3ghz/5.8ghz bridge please?
@ChaddRainsFPV Жыл бұрын
I had such a bad time with 1.3ghz in my area I had to move on vs putting out crappy content. I hope you understand. At the end of the day, your environment has the biggest impact on if your ‘functional’ FPV system will be good or not. And my area is swamped with 1.3ghz noise. I can say I built a top of the line system and can recommend things that work good, if you can find the right place: - RMRC 1.3ghz video receivers are the best for the money. - getting your antenna up off the ground is extra important with 1.3ghz. -having diversity is helpful, but hard as the good diversity controllers (like Eagle Eyes) are discontinued. The Clearview diversity receiver is easily the best but so expensive for most of us. -2.4ghz RC remotes will likely have trouble getting good reception. -900mhz control (like crossfire) may interfere with the video, but if you get longer video cables to your screen or monitor (or use a repeater) you can mitigate that issue. Those are the biggest tips I got. And I really hope you have success if you chose to put the money and time into building this system. Maybe grab some cheap 1.3ghz gear and test it in your area before committing to a $500 ground station, a couple different vtx’s and well over 80 hours of testing, like myself 🤙

The antennas are both used all the time for the O3. It’s not that there is a 5.8ghz antenna and a 2.4ghz antenna. The stock antennas on the O3 are dual band; and you cannot decide to ‘only use one’ and remove the other if you’re upgrading antennas, or it will burn the amplifier chip out of the O3 👍

Would also love to have head tracking. FPV for RC cars have so much potential. I don't understand why RC manufacturers dont offer more of this.

Seriously! It can get expensive to do a good setup but if people are willing to buy these 100mph 8s machines I’m sure there’s a good market for it. There are some decent gimbal options that help with the bouncing (and maybe a really good one coming on my channel if I can get the kinks worked out), but for now big tires and soft suspension work great!

Hi! I am working on an FPV car right now and am using a logitech steering wheel connected to a computer. Hoping to connect an RF module to a computer (maybe even a rasberry pi) as well as have an onboard rasberry pi and communicate between them. Would you reccomend I still use the cross fire TX and receiever? If so, how easy are they to implement without using that specific controller and google set up you have? Thanks for the awesome content!!
@ChaddRainsFPV Жыл бұрын
Trying to control an RC car using a Logitech wheel was always a dream of mine! But using it through a computer turned out to be futile, as there is too much latency with any link that easily works with a PC. I’ve seen others bypass a computer and go directly into a radio (like a TX16S) but I have never done it myself, so I wouldn’t be much help. I can say that the 4G video systems also have too much latency to drive an rc car more than ~10 mph. Hope this info does help a little!

Watched your video, interesting stuff. I own the DJI Fpv drone. I feel like the range out of the box is allready good.. but I still want to upgrade it. So I noticed the link to your iflight recommendation suited for the bottom two antenna. I didn't notice a link for the stubby's you use. can you send me that? Now... I do have a ton of questions on how I dramatically increase the range on my RC itself. I have the ARRMA v6 Kraton. It seems you brushed over this topic in this video. Do you have another video that specifically shows us how to increase the range for how far we control the RC itself. Maybe you did cover it... but i think you mentioned you had a better video on it. Can you drop me a link to that video. I have a tactic controller, and stock receiver in my V4 kraton. And I recently picked up the spectrum DX5C and a SR6100 receiver. Anyway im specifically wondering is their a way to improve the reception distance for my DX5c controller to my 6100 receiver in my rig by perhaps modifying them??? lastly... That video is awesome! Got a sub from me! Okay, so I’ll drop some quick answers to your questions but you can ask for more clarity if ya need. 1) those iFlight directional antennas are not going to work for your DJI FPV drone. You’ll need the True-RC dual band X2 antennas. The DJI drone uses 2 bands (2.4 and 5.8 ghz) and the goggles may get damaged if you use the single band antennas that I use with the DJI drone (I build my stuff so I don’t have to use the dual band antennas). 2) There are a couple different options for longer range rc links for cars. I currently use the RadioLink RC6GS v2 with it’s stock receiver. It has a lot more range than any Traxxas or Spectrum remote I’ve used. But for more really long range rigs, I add this to the back of my RC6GS v2 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/ioPWe3mVf652iJY Hope this helps 🤙

Those have less range than a 600mw analog vtx and so much latency that you couldn’t do more than 15-20mph. You you got a decent drone from DJI or Hubsan you’d have a bit more range and a gimbal to keep the image stable, but still a lot of latency and would likely be limited to 20-25mph. 🤙

Question. I need to control multiple RC cars using one radio. How can I achieve this? Ex: I need to drive one car to a location, park it. Then using that same radio, take control of a different car, while the first one remains parked, and drive that one somewhere. Then be able to switch back and forth, between the cars
@ChaddRainsFPV Жыл бұрын
That would be tough… I think having a radio with a lot of switches would be necessary, then wire an on/off switch for the ESC signal wire would be your best bet. Look up “pit mode switch’ and see what I mean. You’d cut your other car’s motors, but all cars would still steer while powered on. Maybe run two switches, controlled by a 3rd channel. Tough thing to do but that’s how I would do it 🤙

Hello Chad ! Question for you =) what setup do you use on your Air Radio when you using an RC Car ? I mean on a ground Remote Controller you have the gas trigger that goes back to neutral if you release it and also a break trigger. I have a TBS Tango 2 but I also use it to fly FPV Wing and drones, so my left stick is in a "manual" for the throttle where it will stay where I leave it, when my right stick controls the elevons. So the way I see it is that I would have to set up the left stick at position "0" to be like "off" and if moved upward it would be the gas, moved backward the break right ? And the right stick would be the steering of the car ? If you have any better way to configure it :p or could share a video where you show how you setup the RC itself that would be priceless ! Thanks ! Alex

Great video. I'm trying an analog fpv mod for my Slash 4x4 just for fun. If I use a 1w Rush vtx without a fan do you think the airflow of the car is enough to keep it from overheating? I like to bash so I'm trying to figure out a system that's easy to cheaply replace/repair, hence analog instead of digital. Thinking if I can set up pit mode 25mw, so the vtx isn't always cooking at 1W I might be able to get away with it?
@ChaddRainsFPV2 жыл бұрын
Awesome! But 100% nope, it will overheat. Pretty much all VTXs are designed for drones; so to have propellers constantly blowing cold air on them. I tried the biggest heat sinks I could reasonably put on my first FPV car (a slash 2wd) and only had it set to 800mw. Overheated in about 4-5 minutes every time. If you are constantly running at 25mph+ you might be able to get away with just a heat sink, but I can’t even get my average speed that high on my Lasernut. I’m always doing donuts or crawling over some stuff lol. 🤙

How about video software stabilization? Can't believe so expensive system like dji doesn't have this. On any current phone when you record video its software stabilized. Dont see why u couldn't do that with realtime feed. It would have to be pretty fast, but 20+ms of delay sounds realistic to have some form of stabilization for the last two frames at least or so.
@ChaddRainsFPV2 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I think us doing rovers/FPV rc cars would appreciate this. Adding a bit of latency doesn’t affect us too much (as long as we keep it below ~30-40mph). But since the main focus of this system is drones, and this video link isn’t typically used to record video (so stabilization wouldn’t be needed), we likely won’t see it. Great idea tho 🤙
