Seeing Mike, twice my size, using just 8kg was a wakeup call. Hut shoulders today and looked at my form - I mean REALLY looked - and realized I've been hitting more front delta than middle in side raises. I dropped weights to 5-6 kg and used the tips from this video. I felt it way better in middle delts. This is def an exercise where ego lifting has no place. Thanks for one of your best vids Mike

No ego lifting needed on side raises, but still try to have some form of progression. You should do a lot of sets and of course get stronger over the years

Not necessarily ego lifting, but forced/assisted reps certainly have their place at the end of your last set for example.

BPak, your muscle is strongest mid range of ROM, so with the cable lateral raise, the resistance profile is best matched when the 90 degree cable and arm conjunction about half way up, not at the start as you suggest. 5:14

Besides, why would you want to make the bottom the hardest? It's where the supraspinatus predominates! If this supericial type of knowledge, erroneously applied, makes for a pro bodybuilder, i fear what i could do if i was 30 years younger.

Ben knows his stuff. Why swing the arm? Why do multiple exercises for the same muscle? Just use the best exercise. Also remember that you are strongest at the bottom of the lateral raise. Great to see this. It just makes sense.

I always use 7-10kilo dumbbells for raises, aswell as front cable raises, so the time under tension is there aswell as the volume. I get some funny stares in the gym, as you see them meatballs, half repping like 20-25kilo screaming on every rep. Form is always more important than weight in my eyes, an I’ve only done 3 years of Sports science in the past.

I would avoid any internal rotation of the shoulder when doing lateral raises. Over time this can be problematic and cause supraspintus impingement. In fact as a Physio I put the shoulder INTO internal rotation and add some isometric pressure to TEST for positive impingement signs so do not internally rotate the shoulder when lifting weight.

Jeff Cavaliere says internal rotation of shoulder whilst performing shoulder raises will mess your shoulders up long term as it goes against the natural motion of the shoulder more likely resulting in nerve impingement.
@RC-hv1yx

That, and it literally adds 0 extra tension to the lateral deltoid. You can get the same quality contraction of the muscle without doing it, so it makes absolutely no sense to tell people to do it. Though this video's approach to lateral raises is still way better than what I commonly see in the gym.. *shudders*
