Interesting... I would love to make a wildlife pond version of this. Perhaps with the window wall in a cosy underground room. I don't suppose a window can be used in conjunction with a butyl rubber pond liner? So that a normal wildlife pond shape with subsoil over the liner with rock wool protection.. Leaving the window wall with steel reinforcement in poured concrete over laid with the rubber liner. Could this work? Possibly much cheaper?
@vilmalomsargyte2538 Жыл бұрын
Don’t think it would be cheaper as you have to do whole same process. And about rubber liner, it should work. I’m in few pond forums and looking at other people’s posts, I made one mistake and people do it much simpler: whole inner surface cover first (fiberglass or rubber) including a grove where window sits, and then install window on top of it and seal around rather then install window first and then seal inside over it. Hope it makes sense. Good luck 👍

cool thing!!! way to go. help me solve a few puzzles: 1.how a pond raised above the ground behaves in case of severe frost, e.g. -20 degrees (people say that ice will burst concrete) 2.what thickness of concrete did you use and what concrete? 3. Someone advised me to insulate such an eyelet raised above the ground with polystyrene from the inside 4. You gave the reinforcement from 8mm bars? at intervals of 150mm or 200mm? 5.I cover my eyes with foil to the eyelets because people scared me that the concrete would crack and the water would run away 6. glass have you used 88.4 ESG? or 1010.4 ESG? 7.What did you stick the glass to concrete for?
@vilmalomsargyte25382 жыл бұрын
1. Yes bare concrete will crack. To prevent it, concrete has to be sealed, for example rendering or painted with weatherproof materials to make sure rain doesn’t penetrate in and later freeze. Pond water has to be heated, otherwise-20 it will all freeze and because ice expend, it’ll split pond walls 2. Can’t remember. I think 20cm thickness and mixed myself concrete, but made it strong 3. Don’t know what is eyelet, so can’t advise. And yes polystyrene inside (would say 50mm) 4. There is no specific requirement and I can’t remember. As more you do, as stronger it’ll be 5. Sorry but can’t see other questions while writing, or if I’ll look, will have to write everything all over. There was question about glass, it 2x12 toughened

Hi Vilma, nice video! Can you tell me why the glass is not allowed to touch the metal from the frame? Best regards, Tobias
@vilmalomsargyte25383 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, good question, but this is my advice only. I know that absolutely all materials slightly bends or wobble. If a fraction of mm, but still they are. Because in pond is 8m3 of water, this is 8t of weight, which spreads evenly to all directions, including glass. When you put thick coat of sealant between glass and metal, sealant never becomes stone hard and this way spreads glass bending to metal (at the same time seals for water leaks). I’ve seen how guys carried huge piece of glass and just slightly hit door hinge and whole glass shutter in piece. Glass and metal are not “in friendship” with each other, so better avoid their contact

Just follow manufacture instructions how long paint has to cure. After fill up pond, add bacteria to filter and etc. For pond water and filters to fully cure takes half a year minimum or way more. Don’t think you’ll wait that long. And carp is a fish which can survive very harsh environment, so don’t worry too much. They are not some ornamental salt water fish, which needs everything to be perfect👍

@vilmalomsargyte25386 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, its 2 12mm toughened heat soaked glass glued together with very strong clear film. So total thickness 25mm. If something happens, glass (one of glasses) will crack, but won’t break of a film. Thanks
@andyk79676 жыл бұрын
Cool. How did you get the glass to hold in place? I can't figure out quite how to make it work...
@vilmalomsargyte25386 жыл бұрын
This was one of the hardest and main thing to be done properly, but I didn’t made video on this stage how I did a frame for it (sorry my mistake). So I bought angle frame (I think that’s how it’s called) 50x50mm, 2-3mm thickness. You can buy it only at steel merchants, not B&Q or Wickes. I bought 2 lengths of 2m, can’t remember max £80. On one length cut ends 45 degrees angle (ad around 6-8mm longer then your glass width. For example my glass 1800mm, so i cut 1870mm). Then other length cut in half, on each length cut on one one end again 45 degrees and weld to to long bit. To get perfect 90 degrees joint, I used factory cut plywood as template. Once welded, you have inner space of around 1840mm and cut both side lengths to get height of glass. You have perfect 90 degrees welded frame, inner width on around 3-4mm wider than glass. Lay frame on flat surface face down, put a lot of very good silicone-adhesive (some heavy duty, not shower silicone), sink in it few small (1-2mm) plastic spacers that glass would not have contact with metal and lay down glass on this adhesive. Glass is very heavy and have to do it very carefully. But thanks to spacers glass sink on adhesive but don’t touch metal. Once done, make sure you have gap all around between glass and frame, which you fill with same adhesive. All this is like you look at already installed glass from inside of pond. Leave glued glass for at least 24h, just don’t forget after few hours take out spacers and fill gaps with adhesive, otherwise later no chance to take them out. So you have glass installed in frame, which can go in pond construction. After that is shown how to install it. Welding of frame corners is small job (i have electric welder and did it myself. I’m not professional welder and did it more like to keep them together rather then very strong construction). I think you can do all this and without welding, as long you cut frames 45 degrees and just use adhesive on glass. Everything can be sealed and without welding. Sorry, I understand it seems a bit complicated or I couldn’t explain it very clearly. But its main thing is to glue glass to metal frame, because if you’ll try install glass in concrete walls without metal frame, I think if glass touch concrete, you’re in big trouble. My pond is 8 cubic metres of water, so pressure to one wall is 2 tons (weight of one family car). If you do it wrong, things might go very bad. Hope it helps. Thanks

Nice video, btw when you rendering on the side of the frame, does the render cover all the frame and all the way to the glass? Does the render touch the glass? What mix did you use for rendering?
@vilmalomsargyte25385 жыл бұрын
Hi, thats very good point. I was very concerned about it, but didn’t know other option. On inside rendered over a frame and a bit on glass. So render toughed directly glass. Not much, about 2cm, but still. I would say better stick on glass maybe heavy duty duck tape (black one used in construction) and render over it. Stick wider than needed. Once all done, cut it nicely up render and take off. Same thing do it on outside. It was one of biggest headache knowing that concrete touch glass, luckily I still don’t have problems with it, but next time would do something like that. Hope it makes sense. And about render i used same as render on houses, but made it very strong. On one mixer i use whole bag of cement, plastering sand (can’t say ratio, but to make full mixer), shovel of hydrated lime and about 150-200ml of water proofer. First as a base scratch coat, at least few days after second final coat. I used plastering sand, but instead would recommend building sand. Its granes is smaller and final surface would be smoother. Don’t worry if you can’t make nice and even surface like on houses. Once its painted and pond filled with water, after some time anyway it’ll become green and you will never see any bad plastering. Hope it’ll help. Thanks

Hi Victor, can say all good. On winter its ok, just need to install heater. No cracks or leaks after two winters. And lowest temperature dropped to 2 degrees. The only thing I’m not happy with is i did all rain water from roofs goes into pond (for water exchange rather then tap water), but didn’t install pipe for water to drain out on certain level. Now during heavy rain water fill up pond fully and overflow over a glass. This causes white render to get green and keep have to jet wash it. And only way to fix it is drill hole for pipe on a same level as a top of glass, but then have to take out all fishes out. Maybe will fix it this summer. Thanks for interest

Hi, Fantastic job! Clearly you are a professional builder. Would you be able to advice a novice though? I would like to do something similar but it would be about 1-1.2m partly underground and another 0.5-1m above ground. Can I do the shuttering with boards only standing on the inside? The outer wall would be the dirt itself. If not how can I secure the inner and outer walls without access to the outer side of the outer wall (the dirt being there)? It would be great to hear some professional advice on this! Thank you
@vilmalomsargyte25387 жыл бұрын
Hi Oliver, Thanks that you like it. Of course I'll advise you. Your thinking is very good. It's good that you'll do it 1-1.2m deep. This pond was my first such a project and I should go for such depth as well, but now it's too late. Yes you can do shutters only from inside, which even better, because then concrete will full fill trench. Because later water pressure will spread your pond walls to outside, when concrete pored in to trench with only inner shutters, it will have full ground support from untouched soil to not be spread. It's very hard or nearly impossible to full fill gap (which you would have if go for both side shutters) and have same withstand with minimal movement. What I would do in your case: dig whole pond, same way as I did do reinforcing bars (horizontal and vertical), do base concrete, do inner shutters only, pore concrete to walls (up to about 10-15cm below ground level) and than build outer shutters on that concrete (for example this concrete wall in ground is 50cm width and above 40cm). Just make sure you do second wall concrete in 1 week after first, otherwise these concrete lays doesn't join properly and wet top of first lay right before poring second. And of course re bars have to be single length from bottom to top, not joined to have max strength. Hope it makes sense and is helpful. Thanks Eggis

Hi Eggis, Thank you for the advice! It was very helpful, can't wait to get everything together and start working on it. I will try and follow the instructions plus get some ideas from your video! If you can please upload an update of how is your pond/fish doing. Once again, well done! Oliver

Hi Oliver, On one replay is link with other video how it looks. After that not much changed. Just did full upgrade to filtering system (nexus 200 and after pressure filter for fines). Seems all good, but with some fishes brought and diseases and can't get rid off them. Just only advise if you'll go for rendering and painting as i did, rendering is done with plastering or fine sharp sand, but better go for building sand. Its grains are smallest and will make surface smoother. Don't worry if it won't look professionally done, soon they will grow up. But you'll avoid that fishes scratch their noses, some very badly, but its too late. All the best with your project, if you'll have a chance drop me some pics. Thanks Eggis

Good job 👍🏽 is it possible to fit window if I use a pond liner?
@vilmalomsargyte25386 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Interesting question. I think should be possible. You do everything same, is just instead of paint you use liner, which you stick on glass and thats it. Is just I think needs few things: very strong adhesive and probably a bit wider glass, because once you stick liner (which probably will be 3-5cm or more) looking from outside you might see this strip of liner glued to glass. Hope you get what I mean. And when you will clean window of algea, have to be careful not to damage liner or start to peel of edge of it. Can’t advise what adhesive you should use, but before I started to build my pond, I spent many hours on search of all kind of info and I’d seen one guy sticked liner on glass(it wasn’t in pond, he just showed principle how to stick it on glass). Have a look and you should find something. Thanks

I used its called "chemical anchor". Its used for when you drill hole in wall, squeeze in this mastic and put in thread bar and leave it for the night. It replaces wall plugs in soft walls and when dry becomes concrete strong. You can seal it with sand cement mix, but i used this stuff because its like mastic and can be squeezed in tiny gaps and fully fill them. Later anyway rendered over it and painted. But now found mistake i made: don't use plastering sand for rendering. Better use building sand and make surface as smooth as possible. This way will save on paint and now my kois scratching nose in walls and some have badly injuries to it. Hope it helps. Thanks

Hi, yes we are lithuanians. Vilma is my wife, I’m just using her KZbin account. The glass is 1800x800mm. I tried to find it in UK, but lowest price was £850, so I ordered it from Lithuania. It took me very long to find, but if you’re interested can organise this size for £450. But I would recommend to install this height, can be wider but not higher. It’s because of cleaning. Time after time (especially in summer) you need to clean it from algea, and this is maximum height where i can put all my hand in water reaching bottom of glass and clean it sponge, which is quick and easy way. In winter have to use magnetic glass cleaner-scraper, but it takes much longer and harder to do job and not many scrapers works through 25mm thickness glass. But as bigger glass you’ll install as nicer view it’ll be. Cheers
