How to build sauna outdoor

Corona virus forced us to build sauna, because all spa-s are closed. Now we have nice sauna built in 2 weeks.

As a Finn I am in a position to give some feedback to you on this build. 1. You shouldn't put insulation on the floor. A) It has no use down there. I don't think you are going to feel cold in 90C :D B) water needs to get out through the floor so that the sauna can dry between uses. 2. You should also have ventilation near the ceiling so that "used" hot air can change to "fresh" air. By adding ventilation near the ceiling your sauna experience will improve greatly. More air=better Otherwise this is probably the best sauna building video I have seen from non Finns. Loved the video :)

Hello, thank you for feedback. Regarding insulation on the floor - I made it like this that water will drain throgh the floor, it will just protect from heavy wind and cold :)

I totally agree. This has all the important things right. There are many videos with maybe finer craftsmanship and all that but that won't help if they get all the basics wrong. Of course there's always some room for improvement such as the ventilation but that can be done later if desired.

That's a very nice job! I'd trade the metal bucket for a wooden one - the metal will get hot and burn you if you're not careful. You will probably very quickly find any nail heads in the benches that you didn't sink deep enough into the wood. A shower in the dressing room area would be a good addition, if there's enough room and you can plumb in a water pipe. Just cold water would do, as you won't feel the cold if you first get hot enough in the sauna. My Finnish ancestors would always open a window before using the sauna, and throw a ladle of water on the stones and let the steam drive out any "bad" air (häkälöyly in Finnish - translates to carbon monoxide steam). They would even do it with an electric heater, but maybe just out of tradition. I envy you - may you and your family will enjoy your sauna for years to come.

Thanks for good words! There is no nailheads in benches because I screwed them from under there bench. There is unfortunately no room for shower inside but I have cold shower already outside on the corner of sauna :) But thanks for your advise, I will remember and try this.

@@dimibernard Just leave some holes in floor insulation corners, floor planks assemble side by side, in few months they will dry and there will be gap 2mm or more anyway and water will drain very well

Ok, taking notes: - concrete poured in holes probably about, say, 8" deep? Maybe a foot for good measure? I'd probably use some paper cylinder forms because they're so crisp looking. I like over-engineering and wasting money that way. - gravel followed by some cinderblocks, as far as I can tell. - some membrane between the wood and the concrete blocks, nice touch there. - looks like untreated floor base wood. Maybe it'll get treated later? Indeed it will and did. - interesting framing method, minimal wood. Gets the job done, though. - I was in some suspense waiting for what the floor would be. It came together, though. Floor vents, both on the bottom. I've seen some debates between bottom and top for the back wall vent(s) and I think that becomes more important with a wood-burning stove. Any thoughts? Nice video!

Hello, thanks for your comments. Floor wood is treated, its used for outdoor terrace use in our country, but i used on the floor as there is anyway no heat on the floor. Vent is correct, for electric heater it goes under the heated with normsl air flow and outcome down in diagonal corner. Of course you can overengineer but my intention was to build as cheap as possible.

@@JF-kb6bl Yes, vapour barrier presents, saunasatu insulstion plates are covered with foil, which is vapour barrier. For floor I used terrace wood. After 4 years it works very well without any problems

Hi, now have used it for many years, there is no problems so far. Very good and hot sauna. Dimensions are 3x2meters, I choise these dimensions so I can lay down on the sauna bench. I dont miss top bench, i think its not needed in so small sauna :)

I like Modern Talking too :) I was not my intention to make sauna so wet, it just came out by itself and good luck for me. I think its mostly because floor is breathable and not isolated and lot of moisture is coming from outside(its mostly raining here in estonia). Its not steam sauna, its usual finnish sauna just the moisture is very high(finnish saunas are usually very dry).

Regarding sizes please check my comments, I already anwered this once, dont want to go measure again. Pine will get too hot on the bench, your ass will burn :) Its better to sit on the wood not tower, tower will stink later because you sweat into it

No vapour barrier is needed, you need insulation with foil where foil is heat barrier/mirror. I used pine inside and outside.

I would not use pressure treated wood interior at all regular wood just works fine if it can dry well after Sauna. My outdoor smoke sauna floor is made aspen planks and small caps between them they are still great condition and Sauna is over 20 year old.

Thanks for good words! Yes, I considered wood stove, but electric is much more convenient. As I do much sports, I dont want to heat with fire for hours as Im too lazy for this :) Electric is not so expensive, one sauna session ca 2 hours is just 1euro of electricity.

Hello! I am very glad to hear that you like my video. I built my sauna basically mostly from leftovers from my house build and housewrap was from there too. As housewrap is a windstopper, I thought that it will make sauna warmer. Yes, I would reccomend to you to use housewrap(but please notice that it have to be DEFINATELY breathable). Housewrap will cost you ca 100eur max. If we compare climate in Estonia and England, then you have much warmer weather there and I would say that this housewrap is not so deadly factor. But if possible to apply housewrap, I would apply, you just save some money in future from heating electricity :)

Really impressive mate, good work! Was the pine just normal tongue and groove from your local DIY shop or from a specialist? I heard that it's not so good because of the resin but the stuff from specialists is so much more expensive so not sure if they're just saying that or not?

Thanks, mate! Its just normal pine with smooth finish from local sawmill. I choose planks with minimum resin, but even if they are with a little more resin its still not problem, the resin will not flow everywhere like the rumour says. I also at first was afraid because of this resin, but then made a research and found out that 80% of saunas in Finland are made of pine and spruce interior.

Thank you. 1. Type in google "saunasatu", its special insulation for saunas, I recommend. 2. Its paper covered with asphalt on both sides used for roofs, dont know its name in english 3. Its not toxic and does not have any smell or fumes. Its local estonian product and its difficult to tell which similar product you have in your country. Its liquid for wood protection against moisture and bacteria.

Here on the west coast of Norway rot and mould are pretty big issues so anti-mold systems are very interesting. The video of the build was very enjoyable. The chainsaw is underrated as a tool in construction!

Hi Jaak, great video! I've read over and over again that pine/ spruce wood will bend and warp quickly over time, and that I should consider paneling my sauna with red cedar but obviously that's very expensive. Are you not worried about the warping and expanding of these cheaper woods? I live in Ireland so cold wet climate is a concern. I'd love to hear from you! Thanks!

I dont think that it will bend, pine and spruce is used widely in finland saunas for example and no problems. Mine pine is 14mm thick so I foresee no bend for this, I hope at least. And yes it is many times more cheaper. Thanks for good words.

Cedar is non-existent in Finland. Typical sauna materials are spruce, pine and optionally for benches aspen or alder, but those can be spruce just as well. You don't have to worry about warping and expanding especially if it cost 1000 total to build it. If it does, fix it, it will cost maybe 100 to do so.

All wall and ceiling are pine, sitting places are from aspen, otherwise they will get too hot.

Probably spruce or cedar they are 2 of the best woods for saunas

Walls and ceiling are from pine, sitting places are from aspen. And pine is perfect for sauna(there is rumour that the pine wax will be all over the walls). There is absolutely no problem with wax and the air is very different compared to the deciduous tree. Pine is 4 times cheaper.

Hello again ;) So far I have built the base, the frame and the roof, so far so good ! For the inside cladding (which you said was pine ?) do you know what thickness you used ? My local store has the redwood in 20.5mm thickness would this be suitable ? Thank you.

Hi, I used inside 14mm. 20.5mm is usually used for outside, also note that one plate have to go inside other plate not just cover it from the top. I dont know which wood is redwood and if its suitable for sauna, but I would say you can use any thickness you like as far you are satisfied with price.

I dont know how exactly they called in english, but its roofing board covered with asphalt. Its needed to prevent moisture to come up from the ground to the wood.

Is this a dry or wet(steam) sauna? Does anyone know if a steam sauna needs to be tiled or this would do ?

This is dry sauna, if you look on the heater its not for steam sauna. And yes steam sauna need to be tiled as moisture inside it is nearly 100%, I would not recommend to do steam sauna with wood inside.

@@mrjaak132 sauna is not determined by my or your opinion, but by the mode of operation. You have an electric stove, a temperature of 100 degrees and bad steam with low humidity. While the sauna is a closed stove, which allows you to get superheated fine steam, with a mode of steaming 55-70 degrees of heat and 60-70% humidity.

@@pescherskij I have humidity 80% in my sauna and it is absolutely not dry as sauna is located outside. Anyway I think, you are not the one who can decide is bad humidity in my sauna or not as you have not been there. I can guarantee you that the sauna is very humid and not feeling burning as usual finnish sauna where temperature is 120 celsius.

@@mrjaak132 With your fine heater and room size, you should be able to heat to between 80 C and 100 C without any problem. As temperature goes up, humidity % goes down, so going into a 100 C sauna does not burn you. To feel more of the heat, when you throw a little water on the stones, humidity goes up slightly, opens skin pores and gets sweat flowing. There are some crazies in Finland who heat to 120 C, but most in my family are happy below 100. In any event, I agree that what you have is a fine sauna (and not an "oven"), and how hot you heat it is your business. Personally, I like ~90C, going in and out several times in 5 or 10 minute sessions. Between sessions, sitting outside with a cold beer and some saunamakkara (sausage cooked on sauna heater) is my idea of heaven.
