Thank you for taking the time to show how to do this with the option of screws for those of us that don't use pocket holes. However with the original jig you purchased from Amazon and the 3D addition you created i think i might be able to start.

I would love to do something like this in my storage unit. But obviously I can't secure it to anything in there, would this work as a freestanding shelf?

Definitely stands up in place on its own without securing it to the floor joists above. I just did that because the Christmas tree on top makes it top heavy, and also in case my kid tries climbing it someday lol

Build it. If you don't think it is stable enough, you can add some cross bracing.

Great video! I'm on my way to building this with your jig! Also! did you do the gray spray foam insulation stuff in the ceiling pockets you can see in the cover photo here?

I saw your orders come through! I’m so appreciative of your support and I hope the project goes well for you! You should have the jig in a few days 😃 I didn’t do the spray foam, that was done by the home builder

Great helpful video! I have no experience in doing something like this! One question though, why did you not apply any wood glue at all the connection points (in addition to screwing)? Just asking because a few other DIY videos I saw they do apply wood glue in addition to using screws... Just wondering if there was maybe a good reason not to use wood glue, is all. Thanks!

Glad to hear it was helpful! You could definitely add wood glue to the joints, that’d make it even stronger. Using wood glue on end grain to face grain (the end of the board to the side of the board connection) isnt as strong as face grain to face grain (side to side), but it still will add a little more strength to the connection. All that to say, you can definitely use wood glue if you want a little more strength, but it’s plenty strong without lol

When you use a 3D printer, you are making videos less accessible to your audience. If you are going to use your 3D printer, perhaps you could have incorporated the screw guide in it. Dad used to skew nail - two four inch nails at different angles so the joint would not pull apart. Basically, that's what you are doing here. I have seen another KZbinr use a simple wooden wedge as a guide. He started straight, when the drill bit grabbed he turned the drill to follow the wedge. Another eyeballed it. I might have refined your original idea, but drill a hold to accommodate the screw head and some filler. The filler could be wood filler, a custom dowel plug from similar wood, or even contrasting material.

Dude....no one has the tools like your custom made jig. This is not simple enough for us common folks
@DoingWhatever

You don’t need the custom jig to use the pocket hole jig, it just made it a lot quicker to drill all the holes (no measuring or clamping). Without the custom jig, you need to clamp the pocket hole jig down in the correct location for every hole. I have a link for the custom jig in my Etsy shop in the video description if you’re interested
