Today I'm sharing how to build the perfect minimalist clothing capsule for fall and winter 2024. I always thought capsule wardrobes would be too restrictive and boring...wow was I wrong! I wish I had learned this 20 years ago. #capsulewardrobe #declutteringandorganizing #winter2024 Items shown: Burgundy sweater from Target: rstyle.me/+x9W2yhhLLdp9YUpFpXT0hQ (I got size Small) Burgundy slip maxi skirt from Target: rstyle.me/+bNI968Z2zKlDq1SdDEg86Q (I got size Small) Cream colored crew neck t shirt: amzn.to/3N2bJfC (this runs super small, I got a Large!) Chelsea boots: rstyle.me/+ZdqORdjGjQRWjfNfPM2RiA Rothy's: amzn.to/3N2bJfC (they don't have my color anymore but this is similar)! I have a capsule waredrobe that I created a few years ago. I stick to only 3 colors and then 2 neutrals. Everything is in that color palette. I then have less than 20 pieces per season with 10 basics that stay in the closet year round. Dark denim, light denim, dress pants, 3 tee shirts, 3 tanks, and classic white blouse. Once I mix in my seasonal items and keep everything off season out, my closet stays cohesive and dressing is so easy. I also lean to navy/white as my neutral in spring summer and black/white in fall winter.

Great video! I agree many capsule videos tell you to buy certain items - like a trench coat and a moto jacket and a blazer vs just three outer layering items. I also love the idea of additional capsule wardrobes. I am building one for work/everyday life with about 40-50 pieces in total and one for funeral/holiday/events with about 15-20 pieces and 1 for lounge/workout/sleepwear with around 15-20 items. It will still allow me to get rid of 50% of my closet and still have lots to wear.

My 2 capsules are winter and summer 😂. But I usually like several colors and keep my jeans all dark (at least for winter). I’m trying to get rid of clothes that just aren’t my go to’s. Stained clothes are being given to my husband for rags. I always love your videos. They are really helpful.

I absolutely love that you decided to focus on color palettes in building a capsule wardrobe! I'm a graphic designer by background and obsessed with color. Love, love, love the idea of focusing on building color pallettes in a minimalist wardrobe! Love your channel 💙 Also, my favorite outfit of yours was the brown tweed blazer paired with the denim trousers at 12:36 . Maroon is a great color for you as well! Don't hesitate to play with textures too. 🤎

The Capsule Wardrobe concept changed my life. I don't wear anything that doesn't make me feel great, even when I'm home alone with the dog. I used to have a closet full of options, along with drawers full of tanks and tees, all unworn. For me, I modified the standard capsule wardrobe concept to suit my life (much like your multiple capsule concept). I love splashy prints more than solids, so I have curated outfits as opposed to adopting the standard mix and match method. For example: depending on the season - each pair of shorts has a mating (tank or stretchy sleeveless) top; each pair of joggers/yoga pants has a matching (knit or fleece) pullover. Getting dressed in the morning is easy: pick out the bottom I'm going to wear that day, then grab its match. No decision making needed. Same goes for casual gatherings, going out in public, and church. Tailored casual pants have mates, skirts have mates, and some outfits have a cardigan or duster that elevates the look. All of it very easy because I have predetermined what goers with what. The mix and match aspect of a capsule wardrobe can trip you up because not every top and bottom that work color-wise can work on a texture level. I've had beautiful matches that won't work because one piece is too heavy for the other. Each individual piece is a winner, but together they leave me uncomfortable in my own skin, feeling squirmy all day, and wanting to go home to change. It's essential to try everything in your capsule on as an outfit so that you don't find yourself running late one morning with no time to remedy a bad look. Shoes need to be part of the try-on, as well, since the wrong pair can destroy a great look. An added perspective: I always thought that having space to hang everything would be such a luxury, but rifling through hangers filled with too many blouses, tops, and sweaters didn't improve anything for me. Also, I switched from the pants hanger to a pants drawer, and find it so much easier (for me). Tailored pants are folded in thirds, then placed in cascading vertical rows so that three inches (or so) of the top of each pair is visible. I have three vertical rows: blacks, navies/blues, greens/browns/camels. I have twelve pairs of pants in one 32" wide drawer - with space between the vertical rows - all easy to see and accessible. I had forgotten that I had most of them hanging in the closet. Now, whichever pairs don't get reached for within a reasonable period of time will get donated, as opposed to endlessly hanging (because I'm sure that I'm not wearing that pair because I forgot about it, and I've convinced myself that I will wear it someday). Since all of the pants are a fabric blend and none of them are jammed in together tightly (like they were on the pants hanger) I have not had a problem with crease marks. This folded in a drawer method wouldn't necessarily work for everyone, but it has been a great solution for me. The modified capsule wardrobe has been a life changer. I got rid of sloppy clothing so that I feel great everyday; I only kept what I love, what fits well, and what allows me to comfortably go through a physically active day. I also got rid of what I don't wear, so that I don't have to search through a stuffed closet full of useless separates trying to find a match-up. Most of my day-to-day clothing is in drawers dedicated to specific categories: tanks/summer tops, shorts, long sleeved pullovers, leggings/joggers, etc. I no longer worry about being presentable (well, okay, the hair), even on the most casual day. Less is more!

Super helpful, thanks! I have recently watched several wardrobe declutter videos to find a way to deal with my abundance of clothing and they did not resonate with me. Usually they were talking about getting rid of old, stained clothing and clothes that don't fit your current body and to limit clothing to a minimum etc. I love love love clothes and everything in my wardrobe is in good condition and fits me well, but I have sooo much that I even forget what I have and that I am often wasting time trying to find good combinations. Now I have inspiration on how to re-organize my wardrobe into different capsules. I might do mood capsules, e.g. relaxed style, edgy style, sexy style etc. and put them in different areas of my closet. By the way, I am a spring type and my favorite accent colors are butter-yellow and tomato-red, my neutrals are ivory, warm beige, warm olive-green and denim. It really helps to find out your color palette because then everything goes with everything. Before I did a "color session" I would wear lots of blue and black and people would often ask me if I was sick. I need vibrant, light, warm colors to look good.

I'm always fascinated when people have seasonal wardrobes. I wear all my clothes (except dresses) all year round and I never have anything stored. I've done 50 pieces is my sweet spot where I don't feel limited but don't feel like my closet is overflowing. (This doesn't include PJ's or under garments)

You can buy matching tops and bottoms from some retailers, although that isn't foolproof. Most of the time I find that it works, but I ordered a sweater and supposedly matching jeans in rust a couple of years ago and they were totally different colors. However, most of the time it works. I've bought matching navy, matching black, and matching dark brown sets from the same retailer and the match was perfect.

I started using seasonal capsule wardrobes this summer and I think it's one of the most practical ways to get dressed without feeling overwhelmed by the amount of clothes stored in the closet. Even though I still keep a lot of clothes, using a capsule wardrobe, and storing the rest somewhere else, makes the closet more organized and easier to manage. An additional tip is to photograph the outfits created with the capsule wardrobe to always have an eye on the various combinations available.

Somehow a "capsule wardrobe" gives me such a limiting feeling, but my perspective is changing to my packing list. When I pack for a vacation to the beach is different for a vacation hiking or for a winter vacation vs summer. I hate lugging a lot around so I pack efficiently and minimally. If I envision my suitcase as "capsules" and allow multiple "capsules", then I still get the same result (similar and coordinating colors so I can mix and match but have less clothes).

@tarynmaria_ its great. You know exactly what Not to buy, so never waste money, everything in your wardrobe goes with or harmonises with everything else and you know that everything suits your colouring. I used 'House of Colour'. I am in UK. I think they are in USA too. It was a lovely consultation, I felt pampered. They do a range of make-up for your colouring too. I am a 'Vibrant Autumn' and have a wallet of samples of the shades of each colour that suit me best. Some I wear next to my face and others are better on the lower body. Some are 100% so can wear a whole outfit in that colour, like a trouser suit or maxi dress. Give it a go, you won't regret it. Best wishes from Kate 💚💚💚

Over the last 3 decades, I have switched from business formal to business casual to retired (and traveling thru many different climates regularly). Capsule wardrobes kept me from busting my budget for each transition! Find your colors, flattering silhouettes and necklines early on, and stick with them year after year so all your pieces will work for several years. You may not find all of "your" colors every season for all the pieces you need....be patient. Don't buy pieces that won't layer well with the rest of your wardrobe. Be cautious with any prints you introduce (I prefer solids, and tie the colors together with an accessory scarf). In my case, I also needed to make my selections based on packability, so preferred finer fabrics and knits that draped well, packed smaller, and were constructed more durably. A big investment, but they lasted for years.

I dont like to wear tans, creams or camels. Im retired and really dont go many places but grocery store and a few home stores or dollar stores. Are my best bets then lounge wear and athleisure wear? Right now all i wear are t- shirts and yoga or sweat pants. Not very stylish!
