You should give that colony better drawn frames of comb...the one the queen was on is trashed...good drawn worker combs will allow smallish colonies to grow as fast as they are able, but trashed combs limit there growth in a massive way.

This time of year you need to make sure your Nuc have the minimum amount of Bee Force, if not then find some bees to add to it. The minimum is 3 frames of bees and brood. 1 or 2 partial frames of food is also helpful. Remember some of those bees are going to die before winter so help the hive by giving them the best chance to build up a winter brood of bees. Like Dave says Feed your bees. Time is running out to make late splits and they need to be robust if they are going to make it over winter. And for people that do have bigger hives and nucs, if you switch out a frame of bee and brood this time of year and add a frame of drawn comb chances are the queen will lay it up if you add it by side the frame she is on. Great video. Thanks for sharing. I've learn a lot from this Channel over the last 4 years.

As always, pretty solid info. I see some videos claim that a dusting with power sugar will put the hive in Grooming mode and the bees will take the mites off each other. Some claim they dont see mites in their hives anymore. The thing is that you dont hear anything like that from the large Bee Keepers. What do you think about sugar dusting for mites?

David, when you pull a frame from one colony and put it in another, where do you place the replacement frame going in the donor colony if it's a frame of undrawn foundation you're putting back into that donor colony. Do you put it back in the exact place you pulled the brood frame from, or do you push the existing frames together and put the new frame on the outer edge where the food frames are?
@davidhaught844 жыл бұрын
I'll put it in middle where the capped brood frame came from.

My beetles and mites are under control, but what about wax moths? My split was completely infested with them, so much so that I had to take out two whole frames. I only have two hives right now, so taking from one to the other just isn’t viable.
@davidhaught844 жыл бұрын
In small Colonies only keep frames of wax in the hive that the bees can cover. If bees are not covering and protecting the frames then set those frames out in the open until population is high enough for the bees to cover them. You might have to put those frames in a 2 framer mini nuc until they can get built back up, and feed heavily.

Why was the queen weak? Why not give them drawn comb so they don’t have to use nectar to draw comb?
@luci75d764 жыл бұрын
Put them a wax sheet for that farmers. Hard for them to build so much before winter. So they spend a lot of energy to do that. At list make them the foundation of give them build up frames and they will forge for nectar and more go out to harvest , or have a place where the queen to lay eggs. No space , house is not build yet ...how to make to the winter ? And you make weak other hives if you go this way ......bees need support to explode .....with syrup feeding you won’t make them have wax sheets for frames. No place where to put that syrup even.

Some Stateside seem to use Peppermints (Candy) to deter Small Hive Beetles... Luckily in the UK, we don't have SHB yet (!) Good thing because I don't like Peppermint (toothpaste is just bearable... 🙃) Do a Video YT Search... quite a few Beeks add Essential Oils, but do your Research !!! You don't want an AWOL Queen in Autumn when you need to build up plenty of Bees, of Winter Physiology. Just saying. 😎 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 Happy Beekeeping 2022. 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 Some use Oregano EO to eradicate Varroa Mites. See, think its SteveO World.... who does this. Others out there too. 😏

What’s the general opinion among experienced beekeepers on those high dollar FlowHive beehives?
@play-doughsrepublic51214 жыл бұрын
Flow Hive works well in Australia, where there are no mites. Flow Hive is a great way to kill your hives as it encourages lazy beekeeping. Cool temps will not make the honey flow, hence the honey doesn't 'flow' from a FH. FH is literally ten times the cost of a regular Langstroth hive. I run a plastic-free apiary so no Flow Hive will ever be in my yard. Fifth-year Beekeeper, MN. Zone 4/5.

But one of my hives right now is struggling with mites and its holding them back from growing. The question is can I use apivar mite strips now until the vaporizer comes or should I just wait? I'm in wa state and the first frost is usually around end of Oct towards Nov
