If you are feeding pollen to your bees in late winter you better be ready to feed sugar real early because population will build up so fast they could starve out.

Appreciate the video. We bought our nucs last may and that is the thing that amazed me the most, is that there were calm bees. I just thought they were all the same. We did get lucky and got good ones also. Good information for new beekeepers.

everyone has their opinion on bee suits and when to wear them etc. i have worked plenty of gentle hives with no suit, no gloves, and no problems, and it's a beautiful feeling to work with bees and not feel threatened by them. It also teaches one how to be careful, calm, and gentle around the bees which are probably the most valuable traits to have as a beekeeper. However, not all hives are the same, and absolutism is seldom a good philosophy. I have worked hives for other beekeepers with africanized queens, and hives with so much propolis that inspecting each frame was a complete nuisance to the bees. So my advice is: when delving into the unknown it's never a bad idea to have a suit on or nearby just in case.
@RoughAndWretchedRAW
@RoughAndWretchedRAW 5 жыл бұрын
He wasn't talking about absolutism. He sells bees and gentle bees are an asset to any beekeeper but especially to a new beekeeper which is his target market. No one is suggesting to go with no bee suit and crack an unknown hive because you figure you are the bee whisperer. An extremely aggressive hive of Africanized bees has killed people. As you said You have worked other peoples hives with...... Those aren't your hives. I can work my bees without a suit. I have nothing but a Vail and gloves. I only took 5 stings all year and each was my fault. That does not mean I would dare enter another's unknown temperament hives in a tee shirt and shorts wearing nothing but my veil and gloves. With unknown hives you always go in loaded for bear. Bees are differing in temperament just like any other animal or bug. None are the same. I often hear the critics with the ya but ya but ya but.. I can clearly see his bees are tame and relatively non defensive. I know for a fact any bees I were to buy from him would be such because he is specifically selecting for it and demonstrating it. It's not absolutism because it's a specific person using specific techniques to raise specific bees with good temperament. I could sit there and throw stones at one of those hives day and night for a week and create a monster. Doesn't mean they weren't gentle and tame before I started. I could go in to a gentle hive at poor times and get stung still dosn't mean it's not a gentle hive. There is a whole whack to be said about your acts and your comfort around hives that determines their defensive nature. I just watched a video of a guy displaying two techniques to install packages. I also watched the FBM and Barnyard Bees and others do it. The better bee keepers aren't gentle it's wham bam thank you mam. But this guy. This GUY. He sprays his bees down with one to one mix and that's where the mastery and understanding ended. He then spends 30 seconds prying on the can and slipping causing small sharp jars to the box then he turns the box over and rather then banging and shaking hard to get them all out fast he is far more gentle shaking and tilting the box back and forth and back and forth taking at least 5 times longer to get those bees out of the box. On top of that? No smoker near and no bee suit. On top of that he starts swinging at the now pissed off bees butting him. Guess what happened? He called the package installation Technique the traditional method. LMAO.... No doubt! The ignorance and lack of technique he displayed is certainly older than the art of beekeeping itself. This was a real right way, "easy way, how to" not some gag in a comedy. That my friend is absolutism. Who does a how to video with no clue? Worse yet! Who posts a video like that as a serious "how to"? I was gentle and suggested he watch the beginners beekeeping video by FBM and mentioned his errors gently. But lets get real. The title should have been how not to install a package. First video I have ever seen by any beekeeper where the person doing it pisses off bees then demonstrates the technique of violently swinging at bees while being stung. This guy? This guy Needs a bee suit. It wouldn't have mattered how gentle the bees were. If I did that with my bees I'd have been tagged also. I doubt MR Barnyard or FBM would walk away unscathed either. kzbin.info/www/bejne/imrUpmCwgs2nh5I No smoker! No bee suit and no experience with the specific bees in those packages. That is absolutism. That's a person with no healthy respect for their own ignorance or the bees. All the advice in the world couldn't fix this because it's attempting to show off with no experience. It's a real life example of Darwinism. First time I inspected my own brand new 10 frame production hive it was a rear end puckering experience. Tons of knowledge from watching hundreds of videos by pro beekeepers, but, ZERO personal experience. You are looking at 40,000 stingers. They were gentle I knew they were gentle in the hands of an experienced beekeeper. I wasn't experienced so I was wearing the gear I had and layers of tight tucked in everywhere clothes and a smoker. It's literally common sense.

Thanks for sharing you video's I enjoy watching them. I have a question for you. How well do those advantech nucs hold up compared to plywood or regular 1 inch boards nucs?
@tommydavidson1750
@tommydavidson1750 7 жыл бұрын
Barnyard Bees that's good to know I use the advantech lids but have never tried building a nuc out of it. I know lids don't absorb moisture so you have to vent. Thanks for sharing and good luck with the build up.

IN certain parts of the country such as Texas we do have to do full suits. We have defensive bees that require it. I started with Africanized hybrid bees. Believe me it's far better to be protected 100% then take stings or freak out.

How do you feed your bees dry pollen in the Winter? Thank you for your videos
@mmb_MeAndMyBees
@mmb_MeAndMyBees 3 жыл бұрын
Some folk mist a comb with water and brush ground up pollen granules into it.* Or Pollen Substitute can be placed on top of the frames. * When bees bring in new seasons pollen from the yard in Spring, they ignore the stuff you add. They know best !!! 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
