This is great advice. My wife also told me to build projects based on the fun stuff I like to do. After watching this, I realized that my skills are more important than the topic. Good stuff!

Thanks! Yes, it’s not about the topic…it’s about how you make it instructionally sound.

I love how you clarified that you're not looking to get hired by turkey-cooking companies🤣 Another helpful video with actionable advice. Thanks, Tim!

Thanks so much for the handy tips! Currently putting together a portfolio & now more confident in the "non-business" topics I've chosen. Looking forward to building my sample courses!

Thanks for sharing! If you don’t mind, I’m curious what topics you picked?

Although I'm based in a corporate environment, I've gone with animal rescue 🐕 (help shelter staff match the dogs with the adoptee that they suit best). For my 2nd course, wanted a focus on how to provide quality customer service, so making it more fun by basing it in a theme park! 🎢

I recently set up Google Analytics on my portfolio (still hosted on free Google Sites for now) and I'm surprised at how many people click on not my "flagship" project but the Software Simulation I made of adding interactive buttons to an Articulate Rise course. I actually really enjoyed making that project.

Loving your content Tim! I'm starting to put together my own portfolio and have taken your tips to heart...of course I feel like I should go cook a turkey ;) but I'll settle for selecting a few different topics.

Though the topic I have chosen for my portfolio is new to me, the modality I'm developing is scenario-based training - something I enjoy designing and developing. As for sticking to real world parameters, I have seen a bit of a challenge here - In my case, I did a lot of research to find out real world impact of that particular problem /issue. But since this is a portfolio piece and not something actually done in the real world, there might be gaps that need to be plugged in creatively. As for your last and most important tip - have FUN, be CREATIVE - I'll be mindful of this going forward!

When building portfolio samples with no experience, what would be a good subject to present? Thank you!

I pursued ID for awhile: earned Linkedin certificates and took a few Articulate courses. I then came up with a few portfolio entries - 3. I connected with a group on TPLD and had got feedback from some of the nice leaders of the group. I applied to a bunch of opportunities only to land a few interviews. No offers in the end. Frustrated, I put ID on the backburner. Now, I'm revisiting it since I do like the many hybrid/remote options, and the creative aspect. In my experience I feel it is very competitive to crack into. Are there other areas in ID or L&D that are less competitive? Also, with regard to the portfolio, how do you know when it's good enough to present to Employers? Thanks

What exactly is TPLD? And how I can I join?

Respected Sir, I am very grateful to you for all the suggestions. I am an adjunct in Higher Education. I want to be in Higher Education ID roles or in the Healthcare sector. Can you please suggest for Higher Education, is subject based teaching (I am in Biology) the only option for portfolios? I do not have a medical background, how can I get an idea about the projects related to the sector. Very eager to upskill. Thank You.

Tim Brother! Fantastic Advice as usual, I really appreciate it. I wanted to ask you, I am really passionate about language learning and I have learned several languages via Apps. Do you think it would be a good idea to include Spanish Acquisition, French Acquisition, Portuguese Acquisition etc into the portolio? Would love to hear your thoughts!
@elearningacdmy2 жыл бұрын
Glad you liked the video, Jacob! As for your question...I wouldn't certainly say it's something that might be helpful to include on your resume. As for your online portfolio, I would suggest including it in your bio. I hope that helps!

Hi all! I am a New Delhi-based curriculum developer. I specialize in elementary education and sociology of education and have been working with government organizations and NGOs for a couple of years. Now, I intend to switch to the profile of an instructional designer. I have been reading, watching videos and also intend to build a portfolio. However, I have three major queries. a) Should my portfolio samples be general or specific at this initial stage of the switch? In other words, should I restrict it to elementary education work samples or include samples that cater to the need of corporates, include other topics, etc.? b) Should I prepare for the role in terms of what industry needs or what I can offer? If both, how do I strike a balance between these two? c) Are South Asian people often viewed as ‘cheap labourers’, specifically in the freelance space? (I intend to work with people across the globe while residing in India.) I would highly appreciate it if you all could share your response to the above-given questions. Thanks in advance!

a) Have one general sample and a specific sample so they can see your skill sets, high level. b) what you offer and enjoy doing c) Not all people see a certain ethnicity in a negative light.
