I find it so interesting that there was so little build up in there after 2 years of burning pine. I heat my house 100% with wood. Its big, about 2600sqft and it was built in 1825 so I burn a LOT of wood... where I live they say “never burn pine! Don’t do it, too much creosote”, but clearly you’ve shown that if you maintain it properly it won’t be an issue. Pine has no value around here in NY so when a tree comes down people are just glad to get it gone. I may start mixing some pine into my wood pile! Thanks for the video, bud! That was helpful! Love to you and yours. Have a great day.

It was maybe already stated, but look up "whipping" for tool handles, etc. Used exactly for what you're doing and is a very simple process that does NOT come loose. Works for ends of cut ropes to keep them from fraying, all kinds of applications. I do it to all my axe handles and I use paracord. Works awesome.

I couldn't agree more buckin. I clean my chimney every year before the season weather it needs it or not then i can rest easy .good you brought this up .
@matthogarth71266 жыл бұрын
Great content as usual Buckin" I heat with hardwoods here in Northern Indiana and the process is no different. Also, the newer EPA stoves reburn the gases before the smoke goes up the chimney. This is why you MUST burn your stove hot--its the way they are designed. Peace Buckin' Army!

You know what you're doing buckin. I installed wood stoves for a living for 4 years, and been burning them in my own home for my whole life as well. Burn your wood dry and hot folks. I try to keep my stove between 600 and 700 degrees (stove top), and like you said on first startup I'll burn her around 900. I clean my flu every two or three years, and get about the same amount you just got.

ever use a wet rawhide wrap? soak the rawhide (can be wide strips or narrow), stretch it then wrap, crossing the hide grain. When it dries it gets very hard and tight and is tough as nuts. Takes many days to dry. Spar Varnish to keep dry. No oil or the hide gets soft.

I had to watch this with the sound turned down, so I hit the CC button. I'm aware it can be funny at times, but I took my chances. the two funniest moments were 1: when he finishes the chimney clean and it says, "see friends it's clean...or not" (over and out). and 2: when he scat sings, it gives some funny lyrics.

Hey Buckin', Loved the video, as usual. Excellent tips on chimney cleaning. I have a thought for you about your axe handle wraps. Have you considered cutting that cow hide you have into thin long strips and wrapping the handle with that? Then someone could use a water repelling leather preservative to keep the leather in good shape. May be a little more durable than the binders twine and it will look better too. Welcome to all the new subscribers. I hope everyone is having a good evening. Be kind my friends.

Buckin - Ive been using a product called Raptor Wrap Fibreglass Repair Tape on my Buckin Special and it works like a bomb. You soak the tape in water and then wrap it immediately over the handle of the axe where it might make contact with the wood. The stuff hardens like steel in minutes and protects the handle like you wont believe. It does change the look of the handle somewhat, but hey, when it comes to looking after ol Sager I`ll try anything. Ive used in on chords of wood and the tape is still in good shape despite the bluegum splinters that try to damage the handle from time to time. Ask the boys from Australia what some of their gum trees can do to a handle - the Raptor Wrap is up to the task - give it a go.

Lovin'it! I noticed the axe twisting often as you split the wood ...... I was not sure if it were you twisting at the last second, the cut of the axe or just my imagination ;0) One thing I noticed (I am sure you did too as you edited it) was the shadow of the camera when you angled downwards! The answer is to eather have multiple light sources or to move the camera back (or the light forwards) .... but it is a small thing. Burning your fire HOT .... I am with you 100% on that one! Different countries do things different ways. Back when I was a kid we all had coal fires and brick chimneys .... with a backboiler in the fire to give hot water and (if you were posh) central heating ... gravity fed of course! You would see the fire brigade regularly rushing to put a chimney fire out where the creosote had condensed over time into the brickwork and one overenthusiastic fire had set the whole thing alight! As a kid it was great fun to watch a fireman go up on a 2 storey pitched slate roof to poke a hosepipe down to put it out. The reality is that is NOT good and can even demolish your solid brick house! .... Red hot bricks do not handle cold water on hem too well! Times have changed and we now are predominantly gas heated. I am unusual in having a wood burning stove (and a lower gas bill)! We now have steel flues installed into the old 9 1/2" brick chimneys. Chimney sweeping has changed over the years too! My dad would pass his soot from the chimney to friends to enrich their gardens, but my sweepings now are hardly worth even brushing up into a shovel! The modern sweep here in the UK does not use a ladder but has a fancy dust sheet round the fire with an attachment to allow a hoover to collect any dust rather than get the good ladies annoyed at the soot stains. They clean the flue by a brush mounted on a thin flexible fibreglass pole and a battery drill, with clip on sections of pole added until the brush hits the top when it is pulled downwards keeping the drill turning! I use a 5Kw dual fuel stove in a room measuring a tad under 300 sq ft and it is more than adequate! A magnetic temperature guage sits on the stove pipe so I can burn at just the right heat! The point about only burning dry wood is also a good one. as it takes as much energy to make water at 100 C boil as to raise it from zero to 100 degrees (freezing to boiling points for all those on imperial) I find it nice to have my wood for burning set at one side of the burner and the wood (dry but not bone dry) at the other to let the moisture wick off before it gets burned ;0) Anyway, enough prattling from me ..... See you all!

Hey Buckin, been watching for a while. You're always good for some knowledge and a chuckle. I'm just south of you in Montana. I burn about 6-7 chords a winter to heat our house. Mostly Western Larch, but some Doug Fir as well. Always burn hot for a couple hours a day, but with the Larch, I have to sweep the chimney once a month during winter. Thinking of switching to more Fir, it does seem to burn cleaner. Also, I'm going to hit you up soon for a double bit. I've been drooling over yours for a while. Cheers, buddy.

Are you allowed to do all your own chimney cleaning there in Canada land? Here in Sweden you have to have a professional over once a year. I think that difference is the main reason why some people think you shouldn't burn spruce and pine. If you don't get your chimney inspected and cleaned you do get a creosote buildup that will eventually become dangerous.
