Find what works for you! If your rakers are to high the chain is not gonna cut. If this or that isn’t right it’s not gonna cut. Take what buckin is saying and make your saw cut. As you understand how the chain cut the better you’ll be better at filing. It take time. If you gonna be productive your gonna figure it out or go broke

You are right on sharpening chains. I have had to use an electric poulan saw for a while and every time I cut a few slices of wood it would seem slow. With this way you do things I have not had a problem with cutting wood. Also have not had to sharpen the chain after a few small trees I cut down, buckin wood is fun. Thank you BBR for all youre kindness and Wisdom, You a good dude over all

Every owners manual for saws I have bought say not to touch the gullet. Even a lot of KZbin videos say not to touch the gullet. And I never touched the gullet. Could not figure why I only got about half life or use of my chainsaw blades. Then I ran into one of your videos where Buckin said to get the gullet. So I figured, “What do I have to loose?” I put on an old chain, sharpened as usual and tried to cut with it. Once again, I was disappointed. Then I Got The Gullet and resharpened again. What a difference! Thanks for the knowledge Buckin. Now I can use my full chains.

I think maybe the confusion comes to viewers (who watch your channel) when legendary Bobby Walker says leave the gullet in, it helps keep the cut straighter and you agreed. But what the viewers don’t remember is that you and Bobby were talking square ground chains at the time. Here you have Buckin who shows through proof that getting the gullet works, different tooth lengths don’t make for a crooked cut...and the master Bobby Walker says leave the gullet?? Listen to what they’re saying, listen to what topic they’re on and you’ll see. Both men have proven through action they know what they’re talking about. Yes I know some guys don’t leave gullet on a square grind, that’s your preference, but I’d take advice of Bobby Walker over and above just about anyone...
@GoodDayFarm6 жыл бұрын
tdo7d11 My experience with gullet and square ground is this..... it is not as critical to remove the gullet with square ground as it is with round, and a lot of guys are using a grinder for their square chains, which means removing the gullet is an added step. A lot of guys don’t think it’s worth the extra step to remove.
@Andyshine776 жыл бұрын
Chalkboard time, chalkboard time with Billy!😉❤✌ Not sure how many folks will know the movie that's from.😊 Good topic of conversation you brought up here. Obviously getting the gullet is the way to go, although square filing is a little different, but you still can't let the gullet get out of hand. IMHO removing all the materiel is what I prefer to do. As long as the underside if top plate isn't touched while removing the leftover materiel near the tie straps, the aggressiveness/hook or the durability of the working corner shouldn't change. And as long as the underside of the top plate stays the same, the shape or size of the rest of the "C" shouldn't matter that much as well. The more space you have in the gullet the better IMHO. Everyone should take into consideration, the fact I file my new chains before I ever use them lol. Billy has loads of experience, most certainly than most here do, myself included, so he's spot on with this stuff. And like he said the chain has to work in unison, with not only type of wood you cut, but also the type of saw you're running. When it's been this hot across our part of the world, it's especially important, to BE KIND to everyone.✌❤

I'm gonna be honest, I use a file guide lol but these videos are extremely helpful because even with a file guide you have to place it properly on the tooth or you can still cut it high or dig too deep. I keep the file guide flat on the tooth itself (the slight angle backward that the tooth has that you speak of) and it seems to make the proper c-shape you demonstrate. Thanks again buckin'! Kyler

So get the gullet means make sure ur cutter has a C to it. And then varibles come in when ur playing with file size but key is have a C not a \ . (best symbol i had but i think it shows the point) All i can say is after watching a few ur sharping videos. My MS 290 cuts wood like butter. Used to i would push the saw threw a log now i hold the saw and just let it do the work sometimes i even pull back on the saw. First cut i did after i sharpened ur way first time i put it in wood and it was half way threw in what i felt was the moment i touched it (10in round wood). I looked at my buddy said now that saw is hungrey (this is the moment i relized what a hungrey saw was) he said damn u did sharpen it. So thank you brother.

I seriously came here originally to learn how to hand file my saws. So every time you post a video on sharpening I'm there with my eyes and ears open. I'd probably have bought 10 new chains by now, or probably would have taken them in to someone to sharpen them. As it is, I've bought one new bar and chain, mainly because I bent my original bar. So I really have learned a lot from you and I'm fairly confident that I'll always be cutting with a sharp chain and a good running chainsaw. :)

Billy at a certain point the file should either be replaced on cleaned up. Files will collect material and not sharpen the chain as effectively. I wire brush them to get the crap out of the file's grooves. Nice informative video !

Watching this today after sharpening my chain a couple of days ago. Reminded me that at the time I noticed one tooth had been bent, pushed down and almost folded over. Of course when I tried to straighten that it snapped and left me with a teeny narrow tooth about 20% of what it should be. Still working on getting this sharpening thing right though ;)

My take-away is we are all responsible for our own gullets, LOL! And it's not so much the gullet that is important, but rather that a "C " is preserved. Buckin, the "ground chain" is square tooth?
@bob_frazier6 жыл бұрын
Agreed Jeffrey!
@Chevron.Muskoka6 жыл бұрын
Another way of putting it (as local verbage changes) is getting under the tooth. When your getting the gullet your also getting a shallower angle on the top of the tooth making it more like a kitchen filet knife vs a pocket knife. That fine slice keeps the cut smooth and chain speed higher

sparker2289 Yah ... I’ve got 2 of em - 3/8 and 3/8 lo-pro ... me likey in the field ; a few quick strokes and you’re back in the saddle ! Also hits da rakers at da same time .... that being said there’s nothing like a ground chain and methinks Buckin will agree ... lil hot up there in Nanaimo eh ?

Fabz Acres I completely agree but it's very handy or the field.

Yeppers.... a file card extends the life of the file and is worth it to have imho ... if you’re doing a lot at one time (10 face cord) it helps to bring a few saws and xtra loops of chain - sometimes if ya catch a nail or rock etc it’s more productive to swap the chain than try and restore it in the field or just grab another saw lol 😆

@@Fabzacres There's the gold nugget right there in your comment. If it's rocked hard, change it out in the field, but for just worn dull a quick touch up is A-OK.

Im down with all of this but what size of file do I use. I have a husqvarna 455 and 460 and a stihl ms 192 and a milwaukee 16inch he said 7/16 for the 3/8 chain. Do you use a size up from the recommended file size?????

on that experimental small c chain, could you just file down the little bump that is in where the begging of the gullet is? just take the bump out, like a transition, just file like a 1/32nd to just help with the transition? also how did the experiment play out?

I Too found you looking for chain sharpening videos. I sharpened my chain today and got the gullet like you said. It cuts really good now, but it does chatter a bit. In this video you say to use a raker gauge. I filed them also, but with no gauge. Can you get them at hardware store? And is there different sizes for different chains? This is the best my chain has ever cut since it was new> Thanks for your videos, very informative.

!l. I read all of your comments and if all of you say what I'm thinking I don't feel the need to comment. But this time I will! I have something to say! I've been logging for a very long time. Production loggers don't feel the need to say. Look how good I am. Or. See what I can do! We just work! We take it for granted that we can sharpen a chain! Backins been there and still is! We assume that every body knows how a chain works! One tooth cuts one side of the chip the next cuts the other side of the chip. The raker determines the thickness of the chip! Within reason the power you have determines how long a bar and how thick the chip is! See the proscess? Buckins got it right! I don't have time for fancy tools. Or complicated techniqe! If I'm not sharp the skidder is all over me! Then I don't got a break! That means I don't have time to sharpen properly! Sharpen anyway!! Then cut! I've left roomin this rant for much debate!! The point is! Learn to sharpen right!! Your saw will last much longer!

I am new to the channel and have no knowledge of the nomenclature of the saw chain and am wondering what do you need to sharpen regularly besides the gullet and the cutter edge and how do you sharpen the other parts of the chain and how to use a raker gauge and what are the best methods to sharpen all of it.

ok....so the tooth should be stronger,(we left the lower part of chain to support teeth) and more aggressive because with smaller file (smaller C), but it creates more angle under the top plate....right ?

TO GET UNDER THE TOOTH WITH BIGGER FILE ONE MUST BECOME AGRESSIVE
