Whenever you buy a bike, make sure you record the serial number. Having had my triathlon bike stolen this past summer, that was something I hadn't thought of until it happened. With the serial number on the bike, you can provide it to the police and local pawn shops. Also consider bike insurance, something I didn't even know existed until after my bike was stolen.

Seriously, second hand bikes are just as expensive as buying new! Even used Peloton bikes sell for almost new price! Just sold my fixie bike last week and I had to be honest and show the buyer some flaws in the bike like the presto valve broke while trying to inflate the tire before he came. I offered him a free new tube and he paid me full asking price. Just be honest if you're selling.

I have purchased all my bikes second hand. The tip about adjusting the brake/derailleur cables is how I get great deals! Bikes listed with brake or shifting problems and many times all then need is a new cable or adjustments! Got a trek speed concept from someone selling it for parts and all it needed was to tighten both cables and new tubes...

Such a useful video! Triathlon is such an expensive sport, second hand options can be great 🙌🏻

For sure, it's a great way to get involved without spending thousands!

I scour the WORLD for second hand stuff. You feel so much better about your purchases because you had to work to find them, negotiate with the seller, and oftentimes meet them to pick it up. It is was more fun and you save $$$ and help the environment with less production and packaging.

I had a Boardman Team TT as my first TT bike back in early 2017. Ultimately I upgraded the groupset to Ultegra R8000 along with a Selcof trispoke tubular front and disc rear. After I bought a Giant Trinity I kept it for a while on the turbo trainer before selling it to a friend at the end of 2019. Great bike.

I spent two weeks looking for my first road bike, hoping it could last a while so wanted a decent bike. The search was so frustrating as every bike I liked seemed to be a dead end till I finally found a barely used giant propel advanced 2 2019 for £900! Love the bike and have had no problems with it. Bit of advice, it may take a while and might drive you crazy, but persevere as you will eventually find the perfect bike!

Thanks for your videos! Could you cover more in detail about finding the right size bike when buying second hand? All the different details about bike geometry are quite hard to understand, and when buying second hand you don’t get the help from your LBS to find the right one. You often speak about the importance of a good fit: So got any tips on this?

I have that exact bike, excited to see the changes you make. Beaware the internal cable routing is a mess! and getting the cables out of the tiny hole in the BB is not easy!

I picked up a Planet X stealth for £600, great bike for the money, really well looked after. I had someone come with me to check it over before I parted with the money. Had it two years now, not much use last year of course.

Great video. Bikes (used or new) are at premium especially if you live in a city that is very conscience about cycling like where I live in Santa Fe, NM. It is a sellers market. Nice TT.

Or get a used road bike, and used aerobars. Probably saves you quite a bit more

Informative video but too late for me. Our market in our province is good luck trying to find a used TT bike. I did find one. The make is LOOK. although I think I paid too much it is in good shape with all what you covered. AlsoNew wheels and tires. I love the bike and can't wait to get it on the road when the snow goes. Until then its set on the trainer.

If you are buying a used bike from an individual, consider getting the serial number and checking it with the local police before you part with your cash. Still not a guarantee that it's not stolen, but it's a help.

The coin test on the carbon is a great way to determine if carbon frame/fork has carbon damage. Take the coin and tap it over anywhere that looks suspicious and if it sounds different from the tap on known good carbon there is definitely carbon damage. Now is the time to walk away unless you are getting a stellar deal and have a trustworthy carbon expert that can repair it. Carbon layup is not as simple as epoxy+hardener+carbon.

Ask how often or when the bike was last serviced, or what has been replaced by the seller. As a seller, providing this info and perhaps supporting receipts may increase confidence in the buyer (could be false paperwork but i am erring on the positive!)

This is a really useful video. An “entry level” triathlon bike costs upwards 5000€, that’s a lot for many of us 😅. Besides I already have a trail bike, a Cross country bike, a road bike, this is getting out of control 😱 .

at 10:37 there is that silver tape on the break calipers. What is that for? I had them on my tiagra front and rear calipers. I made an upgrade to 105 and those do not have them.
@gtn3 жыл бұрын
That's just to stop the two metal surfaces on the brake calliper from rubbing on each other. Without the tape they could become scratched over time

The most important thing to check when buying a second hand bike is that you are not supporting the stolen bike trade.
