Ebay is a great place for fake or badly damaged rolexes.

I don't know much about watches, but I would never buy a Rolex on ebay. There are very good fakes out there and most people couldn't tell from a photo. Plus, if it's real, the price and the risk will be high.

NEVER buy New at a retail store. NEVER pay sales tax by buying in a store. Always buy USED online. Buy from a Watch forum from a fellow collector. I’ve bought 5 Airking watches from various eBay sellers with no issues whatsoever.

Yep. If someone absolutely had to buy a current model the best way is to buy it from the guy who took all of the losses when he bought it retail.

how do you ensure the authenticity?
@secondopinion66545 жыл бұрын
@@julio2854 If you don't already know how to authenticate it then meet the seller at a jeweler/watch dealer who can authenticate that specific watch brand. You pick the jeweler. If the seller doesn't want to have it authenticated then that's a deal breaker right there.

It's a lot different in the UK. Their prices are at least 30% higher in the first place and you'd be doing good to get a 10% reduction. Most of them will give nothing. I really envy the USA way. Keep up the good work. ;0)

I totally agree, the Uk only has a small number of registered Rolex dealerships, and getting any significant discount is very difficult. There's the advertised price, take it or leave it. A bit like walking into the Rolls Royce Bentley dealership in Mayfair in London, and asking for a discount for cash. They would laugh and show you the door. America is a vast country, with significantly more Rolex dealerships, so getting a discount, however small, would be easier.
@GeorgeDaymondLush6 жыл бұрын
Peter - I am not sure I entirely agree but I do think people are afraid to negotiate. Remember it just happens that Jack Barclay ARE in Mayfair but they are part of a huge group. they will negotiate. Watches of Switzerland would not negotiate on my Panerai but that was when Panerai was new in this country - my guy also said to me "I don't need to discount any Rolex" but always try me on anything else. I think it also helps to be nice and build a relationship first. Just a thought.

Pawn shops? They're the most expensive places. They buy as cheap as possible and sell as high as possible. All my best deals have been on the Internet.

+kevin shaw Hi, that's why you go in there with cash in hand you said it your self they buy cheap!!! What does that tell you? They have a lot of room to negotiate in that price, try them built a relationship with them and you will see the great deals you make there, thanks for the comment Kevin.

kevin shaw pawn shops, on average, have the highest prices, and often times overpriced for the condition, however if you shop pawnshops frequently, you will find a good deal from time to time! You will clearly find a better deal on eBay and other platforms, often time in better condition and with papers, box, extra links!
@sonsoftheedelweiss726 жыл бұрын
Flea markets and especially pawn shops are terrible way to buy. Not only do you not really know what you are really getting, but pawn shops want as much as a new watch, they are arrogant and do not really work with a potential customer, though there maybe an exception out there.

If anyone wants to buy a Rolex Datejust worth 14k for 10k let me know. I don’t have the time to go to watch academy and learn how to sell it. My father bought it just before he passed and I am sick of jewelers wanting to rip me off for 5 or 6k. I don’t need quick money but I don’t need a 10k or 14k watch either. Also I don’t want to do endless emails and all that. Serious ready to buy people only.

If you take a Jomashop ad for a Speedmaster into an Omega AD, I can guarantee they will NOT match that price. And if they know what they're doing, they'll throw the fact that a Jomashop Speedie has a worthless warranty in your face. I will say though, I tried to buy a watch on Chrono 24. The seller had a "make me an offer" option. They rejected every single offer I made (which were all at least 90% of asking price), and would only accept their full asking price, which I found disingenuous.

You have to be careful of pawn shops and other similar thrift stores etc a lot of the time they knowingly or sometimes unknowingly buy a replica watch and pass it on to you and you can lose small or lose big. Also printing out a listening of a watch off of Jomashop will get you laughed out of a authorized dealer. They may lower the watch price a tiny bit but they are not ever going to match my less beat Jomashop's price. Why because Joma is a grey market dealer and those watches don't come with any factory warranty even though they are authentic and even if their is a defect that would be normally covered under warranty. They pay a local watch maker to fix the watches they sell and if they have to on some brands like say Breitling that don't sell parts probably have to eat a actual service center bill. As for Ebay you can't return a watch just because you don't like it. You can if the watch was not in the condition as described in the listing, or was misrepresented in some way. I sold many many watches on Ebay and always had a or best offer. Why because people are cheapskates and want the deal of the century even if I got the watch for free or cheap doesn't mean I'm going to give it away. What I always do is try to find the going rate and beat that by 10-15 percent and start their so that I'm the lowest auction around. Of course I hope to get top dollar but their is a price in my head that if I don't hit that minimum then the watch can rot in the closet and collect dust. Lowballers will want a 50 or more percent discount on a watch that is already priced to sell or already in line or below the market price. Best advice is if buying new figure out the retail price which is not hard and then figure out through researching grey market and used prices. Usually in between new and grey market is the lowest you'll get so if you can negotiate them down to a price you can live with and be happy close the deal. Another big tip is look up how much the brand depreciates some or most will a lot that buying new even discounted still isn't worth it. That's where used or grey market comes in.
@todorelojconfernando6 жыл бұрын
+D fens Hi you can find a counter point to everything I say but reality is that most jewelry stores are not AD so they only want to stay in business and for every low boller you find there's 100 dealers overpricing there goods you may elect to put things in your closet and let them collect dust but that's why the consumer needs to find what's good for them, I'm not against making money but I am against people destroying the watch market selling things 20 times over value, thank you for your counter points 😊

I’ve spoken to many jewelers who have said they just can’t compete with the online vendors. And I disagree that the experience is better at a brick and mortar store. They are expecting you to buy something and are often disingenuous and pushy. Most watch guys are sick of overpriced watches, that is why online shopping in general has become so popular. People know what they want, they are educated, and they don’t want to deal with the pushy sales tactics of the brick and mortar guys. And are you kidding me with pawnshops? They are the bloodsuckers of the earth.

You won't be able to walk into a brick and mortar store and negotiate down to a gray market price, it simply won't happen. At most you'll get a few bucks off retail, instead you're more likely to get the spiel about how buying from an AD guarantees authenticity. The best place to buy new watches is from reputable online gray market dealers, and I don't mean places like Jomashop. Also, excellent deals on new and used watches can be easily found on the numerous watch enthusiast forums.

Good advice. I have to say, there is a lot of great sellers on Ebay but there is some shady ones as well. Once you receive your watch from an Ebay purchase take it to a reputable watch dealer so it can be authenticated. Don't let the sales person at the front desk tell you "looks real to me", ask for a watch maker to look at it. A sales person may not have the proper knowledge to help you. Fakes are amazingly good this days...for example the Chinese produces watches 1:1, what this means? means that parts of a fake are exchangeable to the original and viceversa. Many fakes have become "frankens" (or Frankenstein) authentic parts are added to the fake and resold as original watches when in reality is a fake.

Regarding Paypal protection, i just lot 900 eu when a packet got stolen and although tracking says "packing lost in delivery process" Paypal denied my claim and denied my appeal! 900 eu up in smoke. Unfortunately i transferred money from my bank account and not from my creditcard so i lost a layer. I am pretty shure that if i made the payment with my creditcard as fund i would not have got screwed by Paypal. From yesterday i have shifted my trust in Paypal from "i am protected" to "Paypal has 0 value". Just saying. Regarding point 1 and 2 in your advise, in the Netherlands "mom and pop" stores have left the retail landscape. In my area there are only 2 or 3 "high brow" jewelers and pawn shops are mostly a USA and Asia phenomenon so online is my best option. Anyway, i like your points and i agree with them all. Cheers.

+Knobexploit music electronics im so sorry that happened to you, thats why i made the point of credit card on the video Amex is the best choice, if there's no jewelry stores you have the option of fleamarkets (carboots) i think there called in Europe, if the package was insured try that option perhaps. Thanks for the reply, i will never buy anything again without creditcard backup, you need the triple layer. I just bought a Rolex Date 1500 via Instagram (for me this is the digital fleamarket) from a guy who sells watches from his home. I got a very nice watch without the overhead of bigger resellers and dealers online. What i would like to add to your point is that once you have handled a "real" Rolex, specially the oysters it becomes pretty easy to filter out the fakes and incorrects. My first Rolex purchase was a bit of a snake, it has bitten me but not fatal but it has given me so much experience that my second purchase was top notch. Nothing beats real life experience. For someone reading this today, buy it as long as you pay via PayPal. Then when the watch arrives go to an authorized dealer or a local watchmaker to authenticate it. Unless you are an expert at authenticating a watch then have someone else do it. If it's fake do a return. There are a lot of fakes/modified/replacement pieces on eBay that look original. It might be a gold bezel or bracelet or dial but it's thinner or it's made of 12kt and worth $400 instead of $1500 like the correct part would be worth.

+Devin Werner yes you're so right the auction does not end until the last refresh the site makes and then you realize you lost the bid I hate when that happens, thank you for your comment 😊

I have to disagree with this guy; I have bought watches from reputable online dealers (check out the watch forum sites, you'll soon find them) that gave me deals where in the best case, I got a $16500 watch for $6000 (it also came with the manufacturers guarantee); I would Never buy on EBay. Also, when it comes to buying watches in normal shops, it really depends on where you are in the world. The Caribbean and SE Asia are go places where you get fantastic deals; I once got a Rolex gold Daytona that (by the time you paid tax) would have cost $28000 in the US, I got for $13500. Regarding online auctions, I have never used them and can't comment.

Agree, online is good. Just know the prices and make sure you're protected all the way. The market adjusts for the lack of momentum.

All depends on the model. If you want a new skydweller you are paying MSRP st lowest

What's a good percentage off to ask for at a Rolex AD? I'm want to get the GMT-Master II 116710BLNR. Right now the cheapest used one on chrono24 is $9300. With the current retail price of just under $9000. It's cheaper to go to an AD. I'm also profiting at least $300 walking out the retail store, if I was to resale it for $9300. However, if I can get just 5%, that's $8550 brand new.

+cjack202003 right now with the new rumor if Rolex limiting production I don't know what to tell you but I know a lot of ADs are allowed 10%

+Magister Ludi you are correct you need to pay a premium if you want it asap but I would wait or a older model

On eBay... You can always shoot the seller a msg with an offer. "Hi there, I can purchase this watch at $$$$ would you accept this amount? I can purchase today." If so, ask them to adjust their lowest offer. I've done it before!!!

With pawn shops, you have to develop a relationship with owners that get a high volume of inventory... So they make a little money over what they paid and they get rid of some pieces. You seem very helpful with great energy! Thanks for the help!
