I join the army on September 26th. I have already purchased a car. My best advice is the advice my dad gave me when I bought mine. Don’t buy the car that day. Walk away and come back another day. Make the dealer stay on his toes. The car will be there when you get back and you could get a better deal!

@@seminooblex8057 there is such thing as in-house financing, you know? Also, they can offer you better deals on the actual price of the car, the value of your trade-in, etc. So there are things that the dealership can control to get you a better deal. But you’re obviously an expert so you already knew all this, right? Give the kid a break. I was a salesman for Ford prior to enlisting into the Navy, so I can verify that what his father said is true in most cases.

Yep. Did my research ahead of time and knew what I wanted and a reasonable range that it should sell for. Found a great used late-model car and gave it a thorough test drive and inspection. Played it cool, walked away, and the dealer called me 4 times with new offers. I just kept politely thanking him and telling him I just couldn't see paying that much for that vehicle. On the 4th call, he came down to where I was comfortable, and I got a great car that served me well for years to come.

Get pre-approved at Navy Federal and walk into the dealership and let them know that you’re already pre-approved. They can’t haggle you on the price at that point. I say to go with Navy Federal because they tend to offer the best interest rates and they also have a tendency to let you finance at longer terms than traditional if need-be. Also if your credit is shit, have someone you trust, preferably a family member with established credit, co-sign with you to further lower your interest rate. Have a decent down payment. Also, read reviews on the car you want prior to any of this. You can also find reviews on KZbin. There’s plenty more I can tell you, but it’s honestly a lot to type. I was a salesman for Ford prior to joining the Navy, so I understand it from both sides.

Ask for an amortization table on your payments. This table breaks down how much on each payment goes towards the principal and the interest. This gives you a holistic view on how much you are actually paying for the car.

Now I'm going back well over 25 years. But when I got to my first game station. My senior NCO told me that for at least one year, do not date anyone, do not buy anything big, just hang around the base, and save as much money as I can. And if I do want to buy something, go at least 5 mi away from the base. And do not go in uniform. Businesses that surround military bases increase the prices and the interest rates because they know newly minted military personnel are usually dumb with money in less than honorable sales tactics.

If you are a member of NFCU/USAA, check their rates before shopping. Then you can focus on the actual price of the car. If you call them with the VIN and mileage, they can tell you if you are getting a fair price.

Do not wheel n deal with a salesperson, they're basically walking receptionists..if you ask them a question, they'll run to someone else for the answer. It's way easier to finance a brand new one than used because of liability issues.

Before going to look at cars, find somebody you can trust that knows about cars, at least some. Buying a used car is often buying somebody else's problems. Research, some cars are more reliable &/or cheaper to fix than others. Spend your money wisely. If you're buying a used car, expect to have a number of repairs to do very soon, don't spend everything you have. Consider how much a set of tires for your 'dream car' will cost before you purchase. Internet makes researching super easy, use it. 👍✌️❤️

For the best deals you are going to want to stay as close to post as possible. Look for the dealership flying the biggest American flag. Dealership name is also very important. Look for the coolest one, something like Old Sarge’s Auto sales. It will be easy to spot because there will be a sign/billboard out front that says, We finance everyone E-1 and up.

If you’re brand new to the Army, and young enough to not have a family or understand how any of this stuff works to where you would need to bring an NCO to buy a car: Just don’t even finance a car. You’re in the Army, everything is provided for. Just chill in the barracks for your first year or two and save all of your money. Don’t spend on anything you don’t have to. When you can afford it pay cash for one (and not using ALL of your savings in the process). When you get further in the Army, yes, you’ll be making more money. But you’re going to eventually have a family. A lot more bills. Early in your career as a dumb private is really the only time you can treat all of your income as discretionary income and save nearly 100% of it.

*DON'T BUY A CAR!!!!!* I served 4 years enlisted without a car. All the money I spent on cabs going to and from bars, clubs, airports, etc. rarely equalled a car payment. Even when they did, they stopped during FTXs and deployments. Car payments gotta happen even when you're deployed or on an FTX. Plus, unless you get so drunk you steal a car, you can't get charged for drunk driving. If you HAVE to buy a car, don't buy a car near a military base. All those dealers n are out to gank you for as much money as they can. They know tricks even your NCO doesn't know. Nowadays they don't make money on cars. They make them on car loans they offer to suckers. Buy a USED car. You are enlisted. You are POOR. The way to wealth in the military is saving and investing. You can't save if your money is going to a crooked dealership.

Unless you're going in as an officer through OCS as a private you don't make very much money. You should get a sensible economic car, something in the Honda or Nissan variety something that's easy to work on, the parts are almost universal. Don't get a sports car because when you're on base you are not allowed to speed the MPs are worse than cops when it comes to speeding because not only will you have to pay a ticket but you also have to face punishment from your CO.

Don't get a car. Simple as. Save your money like a squirrel saving nuts for winter. Roll that money into investments if you can grasp how they work. Explore all options. Stay away from get rich quick pitches, hustlers and multilevel marketing weirdos as though they are plague (cause they are are)! Anything except a car. A car is not an asset. Bum rides and hook the driver up with gas money. Use taxis, Ubers, whatever. If you are young and starting out in the Army, a car is more of a financial millstone and potential source of trouble than not. So don't burden yourself with albatrosses. Still, what Staff Sergeant here says is true, if you really really gotta have one. Defer to a reliable NCO, who IS genuinely responsible for guiding you and (this is omportant) who doesn't want you bringing them any headaches. If you make their lives easier... they might cut you some slack.
