When you’re at the clearance rack and you see a plant that looks beyond repair, give it the scratch test! If you scratch the stem lightly and see green then there’s still life in it! Thanks for this video! 💜

Your channel is so refreshing because you see all the other gardening accounts posting videos of them planting so many full price, lush plants and their gardens look amazing from the start and although I love watching those videos, I can't afford buying so many plants all the time and I find my self often in the reduced plants section because that's more realistic for me and so many other people who don't have hundreds to spend on plants each year\ each time you start a new flower bed so its so nice to watch your videos and be able to relate to you.

This is true however many of the plants are hybrids so those seeds will resemble your plant’s ancestors, not like what you bought. But you can experiment and see what you get.

Plants from the store also tend to be root-bound so they also may need to be moved to a larger pot for the roots to spread out or perhaps planted in the ground.
@stephaniewaltman775
@stephaniewaltman775 3 жыл бұрын
Or even better since they are perennials, get them into the ground as soon as possible. But most are root-bound, agreed. Gently loosening the roots and even pruning away some from the very bottom of the root ball will stimulate new root growth.

I want to thank you so much for this video. I always thought "dead plant" when I'd see one like these in a store. I had a new ceanothus planted in our front yard that was dropping leaves and I feared it wouldn't survive. I replanted it in the ground with potting soil (our soil is a bit alkaline)and cut it back according to your directions. The old leaves quickly dried up and died, then we were hit with a heat wave averaging 108 degrees that's still going on today. I took a patio chair and upended it over the plant to keep the worst of the sun off it and watered with like you said, but just not too much. It's in the afternoon sun instead of the morning sun, hence the chair. With the shade during all this heat that poor plant is starting to come back one new leaf at a time. I never before considered the root side of the plant needs to be happy before the above-ground side of the plant can show it. That one tip gave me the exploding brain moment of "Doh! Why didn't I think of that??" Thank you again. I am in your debt and my ceanothus just might make it to maturity so it thanks you too!

Hello with the Echinacea the dry up flowers is the best part because, that’s where all the seeds are at. And you will never have to buy another plant again.. I tell you this because this is how I’ve been doing it for about 14 years now.. Started out with 6 plants very expensive indeed. Thought to myself have figure something out. So that’s when I decided to experiment with the seeds... Now 14 years later the Community Garden is thriving with so much beauty.. And this way I have shared with many people around the neighborhood.. For I accidentally came across your KZbin channel and I’m absolutely enjoying it... A lot insightful information definitely will be sharing your page with the other Garden Members.. Again thank you so much.... Thank You Berry Street Garden Member

I’ve only watched a couple of your videos since late yesterday when it came up on my algorithm. In those 2 videos I’ve learned more about stressed plants and reviving them than any other place, and trust me I’ve looked around. You are a fantastic teacher and you really articulate what needs to be done very well! Like someone posted earlier most people show videos with lush plants whereas you show how to take care of actually stressed plants so one doesn’t feel like they need to give up when they stress their plants, in spite of their best efforts (I may or may not be referring to myself😇) . I subscribed right away and look forward to binging your content and to pretend to be patient awaiting your newest videos 🤪 Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

Great video and needed! So many good deals on perennials on the clearance shelves at places like Lowe’s, but a lot of new gardeners aren’t sure how to save the stressed-out plants. I love how she showed up-close how to tell what’s going on with each plant and evaluate what it needs. Some of the plants at places like Lowe’s have been harmed by over-watering. You’ll see a lot of yellow foliage from this. If they’re really soaked and you’ve already done the trimming back shown in the video, I’ve sometimes tipped the plants out and let them “dry out” just a little overnight in a shaded area. Next day get them planted or back into the pot if not planting. The perennial plants need to get into the ground as soon as it’s possible. After tipping them out of the pot you can evaluate how root-bound they are. Most are. You can gently loosen the roots. If it’s a good-sized perennial or shrub (like a Hydrangea), light pruning away of some roots from very bottom of the root ball can stimulate new growth. Not too much as they are already stressed. Another step which can help is to treat with sulphur for fungal disease, depending upon how much trouble you want to go to. Thanks for the excellent video on helping stressed plants from what I call the “plant graveyard”! ❤️❤️❤️

My front yard as well. It feels so good resurrecting a plant or tree and watching it grow! Anyone can grow a healthy plant from the beginning but to revive one is so much more rewarding. I love my garden , my trees , my yard. I agree with you that watering the plants as soon as you bring them home is a must but I always also throw in a bit of fertilizer as well. I am going to try your suggestion to not feed stressed plants when you bring them home. It makes sense ! Thank you , I enjoyed your video.

Hesitated before buying them, but I could see good new growth coming along & bought them, trimmed them down to the new growth like you did & they are growing like crazy now. I do water them every day. One thing I have found that revives wilted plants the quickest is fill a big tub with water then place the plant in it, go about my business & come back & it is revived. Even if it falls on it’s side it will be ok. Then, back out you go. You make a good plant ER Dr!

Great information. I did buy a little lime for $5 from the clearance section at Loews two years ago and it’s doing so well. I have a deer problem and after they munched on it in the spring I loosely covered it with deer nesting and adjusted the netting as it grew and it’s worked so well and I get to enjoy the blooms that have started coming up. Good rip about cleaning the cutters in between plants. Thanks!

akatija you can also spray a deer repellent to keep them out the garden beds

Garden Addictz Spraying didn’t help. The net works on the hydrangea but I can’t cover everything. Pesky dear! Thanks for the suggestion.

Love this video. All they need is TLC! So true!! All of my gardens are clearance plants on an acre of so many flowerbeds. Some say I have a million dollar landscape. Little do they know Lol. Probably close if I did retail cost. I have lost some plants and that was because of voles not the plant, but I never pass up a good deal and my garden is gorgeous!! Voles are gone too!! Two things I take very seriously my hummingbirds and my plants. So glad to see another plant lifesaver, so awesome! Keep saving them!

Nokesville Haunt thank you. And I’m jealous of your hummingbirds. I live in Maryland and I’ve been trying for years to encourage them in my yard. I have yet to see one.

Hi! I'm a new subscriber and I'd like to say that I enjoy your videos very much. I LOVE plants! Unfortunately I've been away from my apartment due to illness and most of my plants have died. Just as you've explained I told my children to continue to water my plants even if they they look like they're dead. When I get home I take care of them just as you do. Plants are tougher than we think and can survive through alot. Love your flower beds. Hopefully now that I'm home I can go shopping for some new plants. Take care of yourself and congratulations on your twins. As a mother of six I know how hard it is to find time for ourselves. Keep up the good work. God bless you all.

Thank you for making this video! It’s the first one I see talking about dying plants from the clearance shelf. I just brought home a dying elephant ear plant and this video was really helpful, thank you!

Thank you! I always hit the “clearance “ plants for sale at local box store and pretty much all of them look too far gone! But thanks to this video I now can look with enlightened eyes! Love to buy a plant originally priced at $30 for $5 or less!!

I must admit I have b,ack thumbs and my plants always end up looking quite stressed, so it’s nice to see a channel showing me how to fix them up again. I’ve never been sure what to do when plants look sad and wilted, but I try to water frequently and give plant food. Omg I’ve been over fertilising! Thank you for the advice!

Thank you for this, I have a jasmine plant that I realised way too late had a huge aphid problem and it has been looking extremely sorry for itself even after the aphids are gone. You've given me the confidence to give it a major haircut and hopefully I can save it!
