In my experience, the cuttings don't root except if kept in highly humid environments. The roots of this plant require lots of aeration (orchid bark or perlite should be the base of the substrate instead of peat or coir) and need some help to perform in their nutrient intake (so this plant requires mycorrhizal supplementation or some growth stimulant rich in bacteria like fishtank water, earthworm tea, nettle slurry, fish/algae emulsion... to keep its natural dark green colour and a healthy growth pattern). I would also advise supplementing Epson salts for this plant. As a (potentially) strong grower, it requires some good quality slow release fertiliser (a yearly top dressing of a tea spoon of blood meal, guano or worm castings). According to Erik C. van Zuilekom, it won't attach itself to its pole unless kept in under optimal light exposure (which triggers the skototropic growth of the plant, in other words, the tendrils in search of the deep shadow of a tall tree or a cliff with the intention to climb it and reach a better light exposure). He also informed me that nor the inflorescence or the ontogenetic changes (like the puberty for climbing aroids) in this "species" (taxonomical incomplete file, actually) have been reported yet. 🌱

So I am behind the times here…I recently found this beauty at a big box chain store so I purchased two! One for my daughter and one for myself. I had this plant in my radar but never purchased it because I felt some growers were asking a bit much, then I forgot about it until I happened to be strolling through the plant section and saw them. I have always loved the dark textured foliage of this particular plant. Thank you for the informative video…can’t wait for my plant to start trailing vines!

Nick as usual You are very informative. I had gotten a cutting of 2 rooted leaves in Oct. and had it on the window sill of a Westerly window. It hadn’t passed gas or anything UNTIL I gave placed it under my green LED light. Now leaves are shooting out of this baby. I also believe the humidity is very important. It has to feel comfortable. Very nice video as always. Keep passing the knowledge. ✌🏿

What is the deal with planting in Leca? I see so many people switching to this instead of soil. Can you explain the pros and cons in a video? Thank you.
@MelissaWalker824 жыл бұрын
Sue Kuly hi Sue, sorry to jump in here but I grow almost everything I have in either leca, pumice or a mix of both. Once the plant adapts, it’s really impossible to over water. I also find they appreciate the very consistent conditions of air and water in the root zone. Many also grow faster because they take what they need in terms of water and nutrients. It’s also very sustainable since you can sterilize and reuse the media. If the plants are fine rooted like my African Violets, however, it’s hard to reuse cause roots break off and end up in the mix. Hope that gives some perspective for you! I’m happy to answer questions if you have any.

I've had mine for about 4 weeks and the new leaf I got was fine and happy until it god a big brown crispy edge within a day. What might have happened? I've only watered it once since because it was still quite moist & it only gets about 30 minutes max of sun. Initially I thought it was burnt, but I just can't fathom 3 window filtered sunrays on a winter morning can burn a leaf. It's 1,5m away from the window, too. One brown edge is not a problem to me, I just want to know what I did wrong so it won't happen again.

Do this one need something to climb on to grow normal sized leaves? My Monstera Peru and the one potted cutting I have from it only grows really small ones, and the propagated one shot out a ridiculously long stem before pushing out a tiny leaf. I have no problem with propagation, though. Three out of three cuttings grew good roots in a couple of weeks.

Very nice! The actual name is Philodendron opacum 'Green Goddess' and they are not a Monstera. Per Key Gardens, the world's authority on tropical plant names, Monstera karstenianum is a nomen nudum or invalid name in any case. There are three different Monstera called "Peru" and that is just a provenance name, not a cultivar name.
