Carrying your rifle when hunting or traveling on horseback can be challenging.

This is the first video I have seen where anyone addresses the need to hang the rifle with the sights or scope on top. When a novice sees a leather scabbard it is natural for them to think the straps should go around the rounded portion of the scabbard, with the narrow, stitched side pointing up. Perfect way to change your sight setting or ruin a scope. Thanks for pointing this out.

Yours is a very good video on this and like someone else said, I like having the sights up, rather than down. I have liked having it on the off side of the saddle so as to not mounting with it on same side, but your reasons to have it on the left are sound. Thanks.

I'm editing a western novel, and wanted to check how three cattle ranchers would have carried rifles on horseback. This helped a lot!

Also like that the rifle is out of the way if you need to trow a loop. And don't have to worry about up hill travel.

I prefer your method, butt foreword, left side ! Like you said when you are down it’s right there , you don’t have to circle around your horse to get it ! 👍

Do you find it useful to attach a leather knife sheath some where on a western saddle? Where? How attached? The example location I like is it is attached to the upper portion of the rear cinch on the off side.

I really like your horse since she reminds me of the grade cow horses we used on my uncle's ranch. Fitting country too as his ranch is in PJ country.

to each their own but I like the butt facing the rear of the horse when going through tight brush facing forward is a good way to break the stock but that's just me a lesson I learned the hard way

I like your horse. Unique looking animal. Some type of Appaloosa with a reversed color pattern?

Do you think the same basic principles would apply to a sword? Riding with sword on hip impedes the left rein hand while using lance, and hits the horses rear with the scabbard tip, so that seems a no. Hanging a sword like you did the rifle seems to solve several issues. Your leg can stabilize the scabbard so you can draw your sword. Keeping it on the left makes it immediately accessible if you dismount (voluntarily). Vertical in front of the horn would seem to impede the left front leg and shoulder for lateral movements (think maneuvering the horse like a boxer). Ideas? (I realize this is an 8 year old video but have to at least ask.)

Putting up 500 videos in 3 minutes ensures nobody is going to watch ANY of them. They're going to unsubscribe. Next time, try trickling them out, 2 or 3 every week. You'll get more views, and less people getting pissed off.
