Welcome back to another walking stick wood carving video. In this one I recreated my first walking stick pattern, the Basketweave or Celtic Knot. This one started as a large diameter Butternut stick. In the video I take you through the steps I followed to carve the details and designs into this beauty. Finished off with some Teak oil and paste wax and you can see the dark beautiful grain.

Beautiful ! To say you are a master craftsman would be a gross understatement. But if I could make such a staff, which I can’t, I would have fitted a metal ferrule at the base ; maybe copper or brass.
@JasonHedrich
@JasonHedrich 23 күн бұрын
Thank you very much! That means alot to me. I have done a few metal caps and some carbide tips, but the rubber feet allow it to be used indoors without damage. But the metal is longer lasting

I think I like your Celtic/basket weave pattern best but the first one better with the darker color. Either way both are very nice. I'm working on some walking sticks and want to try doing a basket weave but trying to free hand the lines for it don't work well. The trick you did with paper and making marks where the lines needed to be I think will work out for me too. There's always a solution to make things easier and quicker but sometimes the solutions are so obvious they're not easily seen. Great idea, good video.

Really beautiful stick. I did a similar design with a nice piece of Juniper. Carving through the gazillion knots wasn't easy but the end result was worth the effort. @@JasonHedrich It will be a while before I can get out in the woods and find a suitable Juniper tree. It's winter here in upstate N.Y. I am an "Old Guy" (73) I did just cut down 2 Sugar Maple saplings that are a few years old. They are the perfect diameter for a couple of carvable walking sticks and a couple bent canes. I have enjoyed relief carving for about 50 years. Not a Professional but it is relaxing and fulfills one of my artistic interests.

@JasonHedrich I will definitely go take a look at them,I made the stick from mulberry wood,it's a relatively common tree in South Africa,is relatively hard with a yellow color,and I managed to burn the carved out section of the knot and sanded it so the releave carvin really pops,still have a lot to learn but I seriously enjoy it,appreciate and peace be with you ✌️

Great skills....but the best assets in my (humble) opinion is your abiding patience, focus, and attention to detail. Beautiful work.

Wow! Terrific piece! I'm making a cane for my octogenarian father. It's a bit more rustic. I found a perfect "cane shape" hardwood stick. I've cut it down and hand sanded smooth. It's very comfortable for me. Maybe a little tall for him... I'm really in search of a nice finish. I may try the teak. It just needs a little color. I really want to keep the rustic, natural look about it. Thx for doing what you do!

Sounds like you have a nice stick! You can use Watcos Danish oil in a dark walnut Color to bring out the grain and darken it a bit… just a thought. Glad you are making the cane, hope he enjoys it! Thanks for watching

Hi Jason. I made my walking staff by carving spirals toward the top much like a barber pole. But I went through to the other side. Much like a 3-dimensional spiral with a hollow inside. I don't have your skill with planes, etc, so used a drill and a Dremel with various bits and sandpaper. Thanks for your videos.

@@johnschuster1770 nice! That method works just fine. I use my Dremel with Kutzall burrs for harder wood as well!
